Analysis by x-ray fluorescence has many advantages because of the ease of operation and portability of instrumentation. Book excerpt: The increasing production of industrial goods, heat, and energy, as well as traffic, has led to the release of considerable amounts of toxic trace metals to the atmosphere. The result is elevated concentrations of toxic metals in local populations and eco systems. Recently the problem of atmospheric long-range transport of trace metals has also been recognized. Significant amounts of these pollutants are disposed and deposited both on regional and global scales. In the atmosphere they may influence the chemical reactions. Of particular interest is their catalytic effect on the oxidation prosesses taking place in water droplets or on the surface of wet particles (e. g. the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphate), however, the main environmental impact starts when the atmospheric trace metals are deposited on ground and vegetation and subsequently brought into the water circulation. During the later years significant progress has been made in the development of equipment to reduce and control the atmospheric emissions of toxic trace metals. This particularly applies to electrostatic precipitators and wet scrubbers for the collection of fine particles. The main objective of the workshop was to survey present knowledge concerning the sources, atmospheric fluxes, sinks and chemical impact of the atmospheric trace metals, and to review the developments of emission control equipment and the perspectives to reduce the potential risks from toxic metals. During the first two days of the meeting, 15 invited review papers were presented.

Book excerpt: A field program using a portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) instrument was carried out to obtain data on loadings of RCRA-regulated heavy metals in paint on metal surfaces within the Pilot Plant Complex at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Measured loadings of heavy metals were sufficiently small that they do not present problems for either human exposure or the disposition of building demolition rubble. An attempt to develop an external calibration of the XRF instrument for cadmium, chromium, and lead was unsuccessful. Significant substrate effects were observed for cadmium and chromium; for accurate results for these elements, it appears necessary to calibrate by using a sample of the actual metal substrate on which the paint is located. No substrate effects were observed for lead, but the use of lead L-shell x-ray emission lines in the instrument mode utilized in this study appears to result in a significant underestimate of the lead loading due to self-absorption of these emissions.

The role of the environmental geochemist and colleagues in environ mental sciences is to scientifically evaluate how to manage metalsl metalloids at sources or in-situ so as to alleviate or eliminate their negative health impacts on living populations. This is initiated by identifying sources and by developing models of the physieal, chem ieal and biologieal controls on mobilization, interaction, deposition and accumulation of potentially toxie metals/metalloids in source systems and earth ecosystems. Prom this knowledge base, environ mental scientists (e. g. , geologists, chemists, biologists, environmen tal engineers, physicists/meteorologists) work together to develop Preface VI concepts and technologieal methodologies to preserve global eco systems. Their concerted efforts are equally focussed on devising strategems to remediate ecosystems still carrying heavy metals/metal loids pollutant burdens from ancient and modern societies.

Book excerpt: House dust has been identified as a repository for many environmental pollutants, and these may arise from internal sources or be transported from external sources. Of particular interests in house dust are chemicals such as heavy metals and other non-metal elements that pose potential harm to human health. These chemicals are particularly harmful to the health of children. They have greater exposure to house dust and are more susceptible to the harmful effects of heavy metals. Typical analytical methods require analysis in the laboratory through laborious and expensive measures. In the present study, an easy and realtime analytical method was developed for trace elements in house dust, measured by a handheld energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence Analyzer (XRF). The concentration values of elements were compared with values from same dust sample previously measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Measurement was made on house dust acquired by previous studies. In this study, 1.62 grams of house dust was the minimum weight, and the handheld XRF was sensitive enough to detect a total number of fourteen elements (Pb, Mo, Ni, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Zr, Ag, Cd, Sn, Ba, and Hg), as compared to twenty-five elements detected by ICP-MS. After excluding outliers, data from the handheld XRF yielded a good prediction of concentration for the elements Fe, Pb, Mn and Zn, with regression R2 values of 0.86, 0.83, 0.80 and 0.74, respectively as compared with measurement made by ICP-MS. A moderate relationship between XRF and ICP-MS was found for Co and Cu, with regression R2 values of 0.56 and 0.52, respectively. The lowest correlation between XRF and ICP-MS was observed for Ni, Sn, Cr, Sb, Mo and Cd. In conclusion, data from this study indicates that a hand held XRF may serve as a useful and cost-effective analytical method for Fe, Pb, Mn, Zn, Co and Cu measurements in house dust. From a public health perspective, this provides a better picture for health risk assessment.

Book excerpt: The Superfund program of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created in the 1980s to address human-health and environmental risks posed by abandoned or uncontrolled hazardous-waste sites. Identification of Superfund sites and their remediation is an expensive multistep process. As part of this process, EPA attempts to identify parties that are responsible for the contamination and thus financially responsible for remediation. Identification of potentially responsible parties is complicated because Superfund sites can have a long history of use and involve contaminants that can have many sources. Such is often the case for mining sites that involve metal contamination; metals occur naturally in the environment, they can be contaminants in the wastes generated at or released from the sites, and they can be used in consumer products, which can degrade and release the metals back to the environment. This report examines the extent to which various sources contribute to environmental lead contamination at Superfund sites that are near lead-mining areas and focuses on sources that contribute to lead contamination at sites near the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District. It recommends potential improvements in approaches used for assessing sources of lead contamination at or near Superfund sites.
