Book excerpt: Deep Creek Dam is owned by the Montgomery County Commissioners and maintained by the Parks Department. The dam and reservoir are used for recreational purposes. The dam and its appurtenant facilities are considered to be in fair condition. The dam is classified as a Small size structure with a High hazard classification consistent with its potential in the event of sudden failure for extensive property and loss of life downstream along Perkiomen Creek. In accordance with criteria established by Federal (OCE) Guidelines, the spillway design flood for this 'Small' size dam and 'High' hazard classification is 0.5 to the full Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). As the total storage capacity is nearer the lower limited for the Small size classification, and as the watershed controlled by Deep Creek Dam is small compared to the watershed controlled by downstream knight Dam, the selected spillway design flood is 0.5 PMF. Hydrologic and hydraulic calculations indicate that the spillway structure is capable of discharging about 0.21 PMF without overtopping the embankment at the right abutment. If the right abutment and embankment were raised to the original design elevation, the spillway would be capable of discharging about 0.38 PMF without overtopping. The 0.4 PMF is judged to cause failure of the embankment by overtopping, but failure does not significantly increase the danger to human life or property; thus, the spillway rating for this structure is considered to be Inadequate but not Seriously Inadequate.

Book excerpt: Saw Mill Dam is a zoned earth embankment with an impervious core, an outer previous shell, a cutoff trench and drainage blanket and rock toe. These features are shown on Plate 3, entitled 'Typical Embankment Sections'. The dam is approximately 1,335 feet long and the height, measured from the crest to the principal spillway discharge pipe inlet, is 47 feet. Borrow materials were obtained from the spillway excavation and within the reservoir area. The core of the dam is composed of clayey materials derived from the borrow areas, and the shell is composed of more previous materials selectively excavated from the borrow pits. The 10 foot wide cutoff trench has 1H:1V side slopes and a grout cap at the base of the trench. The foundation was grouted using a single line grout curtain with six foot hole spacings. The average hole depth is 15 feet and the maximum hole depth is 30 feet. The upstream slope is 3H:1V, the lower two-thirds of the slope is protected with 18 inches of riprap over a 12-inch filter blanket and the upper portion is protected with grass. The downstream slope is 2.5H:1V and protected with grass.

Book excerpt: Camp Delmont Dam is a concrete capped rockfilled timber crib structure with steel and timber sheetpile abutments about 190 feet long, with a maximum height of 19 feet. The dam has a maximum storage capacity of 236 acre feet and a maximum height of 19 feet which places it in the 'Small' size category. Because of the chance for appreciable damage to several cottages located downstream of the site and little chance for loss of life due to failure of the dam, the dam is judged to be a 'Significant' hazard structure. Due to the inhabitable dwellings located downstream of the dam, fifty percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) was selected as the appropriate Spillway Design Flood (SDF). An examination of the results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses indicates that the spillway and adjacent roadway are capable of passing 36% of the PMF without overtopping the dam abutments. The selected SDF for the dam is fifty percent of the PMF. Since the spillway is not capable of passing the SDF, the spillway is classified as 'Inadequate'. Further examination of the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses indicates that the spillway and adjacent roadway are capable of passing the 100 year event without overtopping the dam abutments. Based on visual observations and a review of the information obtained from Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, Camp Delmont Dam appears to be in good condition.

The embankment contains an impervious core constructed over a cutoff trench under the dam centerline. About 1,270 feet of the embankment is roughly parallel to U.S. Route 22/Interstate 78. The remaining 280 feet of the embankment forms an angle of about 60 degrees with the highway. The shorter leg contains the maximum section and the principal spillway. The principal spillway consists of a concrete drop inlet riser, a 222 foot long, 30 inch reinforced concrete pipe with eight anti-seep collars, and an impact basin. The emergency spillway was excavated through rock at the right abutment. The grass-lined trapezoidal channel is approximately 150 feet wide and 30 feet wide. The dam and its appurtenant facilities are considered to be in good condition. Calculations indicate that the existing spillway systems are capable of passing the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping. Therefore, the spillway system is considered to be adequate.

Book excerpt: Green Lane Reservoir Dam is a concrete gravity structure approximately 780 feet long, with a maximum height of about 87 feet. A 424 foot upgated spillway (crest Elevation 286.0) is centered along the length of the dam. The non-overflow section (Elevation 297.0) has a top width of 14 feet. Below Elevation 281.0, the upstream slope is battered on a 1 horizontal to 14.55 vertical (1H:14.55V); the downstream slope is 1H:1.35V. Both faces are vertical above Elevation 281.0. A 3-foot high parapet has been constructed on the non-overflow section. The dam is founded on firm bedrock. The foundation rock was mass grouted to depths up to 30 feet to reduce loss of water through seepage. The non-overflow sections are founded in rock on both sides of the stream valley. This rock has also been grouted to reduce seepage. The spillway is a concrete Ogee with a maximum height of approximately 77 feet. A flip bucket type energy dissipator with a 25-foot radius has been constructed at the toe of the spillway. Training walls extend downstream from the dam on both sides of the spillway. The walls are constructed to Elevation 255.0 and retain and protect the channel banks immediately below the dam. A water intake facility is located in the non-overflow section at the north end of the spillway. The intake is separated into two parallel chambers by an internal wall. Flow can be directed between the two chambers by a 36-inch sluice gate positioned in the wall. Openings at four different stages control water entering the intake. Each opening is fitted with a removable screen to prevent debris from entering.
