Book excerpt: Florida Governor Sam Houston St. Clair is the Republican candidate for President when on Election Night it’s discovered that there’s been a tie in the Electoral College, resulting in a deadlock. The Constitution requires that in such a case the election is thrown into the House of Representatives, where each state has a single vote. (The same thing happened to Thomas Jefferson.) Sam’s son is Jack Houston St. Clair, who, although a Democrat, has put his personal feelings aside and has been helping his dad during the campaign. Incumbent Republican President Jeffrey Norwalk is determined that St. Clair will succeed him because he expects St. Clair to continue his policies, especially his foreign policy. The Democratic candidate Senator Frederick Thurston, violently opposes Norwalk’s foreign policy. On the other side of the world, the Russians and the Chinese have armies massed at their borders. The Chinese have threatened to divert the water from the massive Ili River which flows into Russia providing the water resources crucial to Russian agriculture. The Russians have already bombed a dam built by the Chinese, but now the Chinese are ready to open a new canal dug that will divert the water, thus crippling Russian agriculture. Policymakers around the world are sitting on the edge of their seats. Norwalk and St. Clair support the Russians, while the Democrats and Thurston support the Chinese. The Russian and Chinese ambassadors in Washington are already working behind the scenes to get their man elected. Norwalk’s aide of Congressional Liaison, Phil Slanetti, has been keeping top-secret files on all members of Congress, a secret weapon Norwalk has never used. No one knows about the Keystone File expect Norwalk and Slanetti. As it becomes clear what’s at stake, everybody prepares to travel to Washington to begin the deadly bargaining that will eventually produce a new President.

Book excerpt: When a glamorous literary agent falls prey to a violent stalker, she discovers that the publishing biz can really be murder, for fans of The Spellman Files and Maisie Dobbs “Suspenseful . . . Barbara Rogan cleverly explores . . . our capacity for self-deception and weaves it into an absorbing mystery that keeps its secret until the very end.” —NPR Jo Donovan always manages to come out on top. Originally from the backwoods of Appalachia, she forged a hard path to elegant lunches and parties among New York City’s literati. At thirty-five, she’s the widow of the renowned novelist (and notorious playboy) Hugo Donovan, the owner of one of the best literary agencies in town, and is one of the most sought-after agents in the business. But all this is about to fall apart, as a would-be client turns stalker, a hack shops around a proposal for an unauthorized tell-all biography of Hugo, and a handsome old flame shows up without warning. Both a seasoned author and a former literary agent herself, Barbara Rogan knows the publishing world from all angles. Fans of Lisa Lutz and Jaqueline Winspear will adore Jo Donovan and Rogan’s wickedly sharp tale that skewers the dangerous fictions we read—and the dangerous fictions we tell ourselves.
Download or read book MH CHAOS written by Frank J Rafalko and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation MH/CHAOS was the code name for a domestic espionage project conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency in the late1960s and early 1970s. MH/CHAOS: The CIA’s Campaign Against the Radical New Left and the Black Panthers is an insider’s account of the CIA’s Counterintelligence Staff’s Special Operations Group first charged by Presidents Lyndon Johnson and later by Richard Nixon to find foreign intelligence, terrorist, organizations or government contacts, controlling or influencing Anti-Vietnam War activists or American black extremists protesting, bombing and carrying out other anti-government, unlawful or illegal activities in the United States. The operation was launched under Director of Central Intelligence Richard Helms, by chief of counter-intelligence, James Jesus Angleton, and headed by Richard Ober. The program's goal was to unmask possible foreign influences on the student antiwar movement. The "MH" designation signified that the program had a worldwide area of operations. When President Nixon came to office in 1969, all of the existing domestic surveillance activities were consolidated into Operation MH/CHAOS and used CIA stations abroad to report on antiwar activities of United States citizens traveling abroad, employing methods such as physical surveillance and electronic eavesdropping, utilizing "liaison services" in maintaining such surveillance. The operations were later expanded to include 60 officers. In 1969, following the expansion, the operation began developing its own network of informants for the purposes of infiltrating various foreign antiwar groups located in foreign countries that might have ties to domestic groups. Eventually, CIA officers expanded the program to include other leftist or counter-cultural groups with no discernible connection to Vietnam, such as groups operating within the women's liberation movement, including Students for a Democratic Society, the Black Panther Party and Women Strike for Peace. Also targeted was the Israeli embassy, and domestic Jewish groups such as the B'nai B'ritht. As a result of the Watergate break-in, involving two former CIA officers, Operation MH/CHAOS was discontinued. The secret nature of the program was exposed by Seymour Hersh in the New York Times on December 22, 1974. The following year, further details were revealed during Representative Bella Abzug's House Subcommittee on Government Information and individual Rights. The government, in response to the revelations, launched the Commission on CIA Activities Within the United States (The Rockefeller Commission), lead by then Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, to investigate the depth of the surveillance. In Operation MHCHOAS, the author, who is a former CIA officer, refutes the charges made by the New York Times and the Washington Post at the time that this domestic spying program first made headlines, and takes issue with conclusions of the Rockefeller Commission and the Church Committee. He relates how the Special Operations Group began, was staffed and how it was transformed into an anti-terrorist unit before it ceased operation. Rafalko details the information that Special Operations Group collected against the New Left and Black extremists and makes the case that the MHCHAOS program was justified, why the CIA was the logical agency to conduct the collection, and the consequences suffered later by American counterintelligence because of these investigations.

Download or read book Francis Scott Key written by Edward S. Delaplaine and published by . This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the most definitive biography of Francis Scott Key ever written; a portrait of "an unusual character-a lawyer, orator, churchman, statesman, and poet, who was deeply patriotic and deeply religious." "Certain it is that the fame of Francis Scott Key flowed almost entirely from the fact that he wrote The Star Spangled Banner. Yet his life is significant for many other reasons. For many years, from the time when he first appeared before Chief Justice Marshall to plead for the release of Aaron Burr's messengers, Key was one of the leaders of the American Bar. He defended Sam Houston in his dramatic trial in the House of Representatives; he figured in Peggy Eaton's quarrel; he opposed Nullification and the United States Bank; and he was Andrew Jackson's conciliator in Alabama in one of the most stirring episodes in the history of the State." Illustrations, poems, "all the important utterances of his known public speeches," a bibliography, and an index to full names, places and subjects enhance this exceptional work.

Book excerpt: Alice Morse Earle was a social historian of great note at the turn of the century, and many of her books have lived on as well-researched and well-written texts of everyday life in Colonial America. Curious Punishments of Bygone Days was published in 1896. It is a catalog of early American crimes and their penalties, with chapters on the pillories, stocks, the scarlet letter, the ducking stool, discipline of authors and books (egad!), and four other horrifying examples of ways in which those who transgressed the laws of Colonial America were made to pay for their sins.
Download or read book Oskar Schindler written by David Crowe and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2007-08-01 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spy, businessman, bon vivant, Nazi Party member, Righteous Gentile. This was Oskar Schindler, the controversial man who saved eleven hundred Jews during the Holocaust but struggled afterwards to rebuild his life and gain international recognition for his wartime deeds. David Crowe examines every phase of Schindler's life in this landmark biography, presenting a savior of mythic proportions who was also an opportunist and spy who helped Nazi Germany conquer Poland. Schindler is best known for saving over a thousand Jews by putting them on the famed "Schindler's List" and then transferring them to his factory in today's Czech Republic. In reality, Schindler played only a minor role in the creation of the list through no fault of his own. Plagued by local efforts to stop the movement of Jewish workers from his factory in Krakóo his new one in Brüz, and his arrest by the SS who were investigating corruption charges against the infamous Amon Gö Schindler had little say or control over his famous "List." The tale of how the "List" was really prepared is one of the most intriguing parts of the Schindler story that Crowe tells here for the first time. Forced into exile after the war, success continually eluded Schindler and he died in very poor health in 1974. He remained a controversial figure, even in death, particularly after Emilie Schindler, his wife of forty-six years, began to criticize her husband after the appearance of Steven Spielberg's film in 1993. In Oskar Schindler, Crowe steps beyondthe mythology that has grown up around the story of Oskar Schindler and looks at the life and work of this man whom one prominent Schindler Jew described as "an extraordinary man in extraordinary times."
