Download or read book Critical Marxism in Mexico written by Stefan Gandler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Critical Marxism in Mexico, Stefan Gandler, coming from the tradition of the Frankfurt School, reveals the contributions that Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez and Bolívar Echeverría have made to universal thought. While in recent times Latin America has taken its distance from global power centers, and reorganised its political and economic relations, in philosophy the same tendency is barely visible. Critical Marxism in Mexico is a contribution to the reorganisation of international philosophical discussion, with Critical Theory as the point of departure. Despite having studied in Europe, where philosophical Eurocentrism remains virulent, Gandler opens his eyes to another tradition of modernity and offers an account of the life and philosophy of Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez and Bolívar Echeverría, former senior faculty members at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
Download or read book A History of the Work Concept written by Agamenon R. E. Oliveira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the concept of work from its earliest stages and shows that its further formalization leads to equilibrium principle and to the principle of virtual works, and so pointing the way ahead for future research and applications. The idea that something remains constant in a machine operation is very old and has been expressed by many mathematicians and philosophers such as, for instance, Aristotle. Thus, a concept of energy developed. Another important idea in machine operation is Archimedes' lever principle. In modern times the concept of work is analyzed in the context of applied mechanics mainly in Lazare Carnot mechanics and the mechanics of the new generation of polytechnical engineers like Navier, Coriolis and Poncelet. In this context the word "work" is finally adopted. These engineers are also responsible for the incorporation of the concept of work into the discipline of economics when they endeavoured to combine the study of the work of machines and men together.
Download or read book Marxism and International Relations written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where is Marxism in International Relations? The answer lies in this collective work by Brazilian authors who have looked to Marxist theory for an alternative perspective, and therefore outside the dominant ideas in the field, to analyse International Relations. Specifically, the answer is divided into themes: key ideas by Marx and Engels for IR, Marxist thinkers as IR theorists, Marxist theories on imperialism, and the Latin-American theory on dependency. With the end result, this book adds to the international intellectual efforts to criticize and overcome capitalism.
Download or read book Returnees written by Samuel Kilsztajn and published by Samuel Kilsztajn. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings the suffering and sober account of the itinerary of a very particular category of Jews. Survivors of the Nazi extermination in Europe, they arrived in Israel, lived there – some, like Samuel Kilsztajn, the author of this book, were born in the Promised Land –, did not adapt and re-emigrated to Europe, as a platform to reach the American continent, the New World. In Returnees, Samuel Kilsztajn creates a dynamic of coming and going between the characters and the structures in the midst of which they move, and from there arises, helped by the clarity of the writing, a story that holds, moves and makes you think about the stones that people find along the way. In such an unusual and cruel way. And the words that describe this painful tour around the vast world are not measured by a supposed politeness: they are spoken with all the letters. Scream. After seven decades, the drama of refugees is becoming increasingly present on all continents. You have to clamour out for them. Cristina Konder and Mauro Malin

Book excerpt: The stories of Jewish Holocaust survivors are all the same and at the same time all unique and thrilling. This is the story of two World War II Polish Jew survivors, Michal Kilsztajn from Bendin and Chana Libman from Mezritsh. Michal spent the War in Lager, Nazi German Forced Labor and Concentration Camps; and Chana was deported with her mother and siblings to Siberia. Among the statistics that hide personal tragedies, almost all the large families of Michal and Chana, which were living in Poland for centuries, were exterminated during World War II. Besides my parents’ memories I carry with me, I immersed in the vast literature of the Holocaust and had also the opportunity and joy, through my research, to find unknown but quite close relatives scattered to the four corners of the World. The active participation of many relatives, unknown until then, was yet decisive for the reconstruction of the family history’s puzzle. In this sense, these memories were collectively produced by several family members. One information here, another there, and, suddenly, everything started to come to life (and unfortunately suffering and death). These memories are a tribute to my parents and to the vanished Jewish World from Central and Eastern Europe. They collect documents, photographs and stories of private and family interest; and were written with continuous back and forth among the memories of the survivors and their direct descendants; and between these memories and the documents found in Civil Records, museums and other institutions for the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust.
Download or read book Engels 200 written by Frank Jacob and published by Büchner-Verlag. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Engels was one of the most important German thinkers of the 19th century and his writings are still important today. Addressing the pressing issues of his time, the broadly interested scholar Engels would write about many different topics, and thereby not only pave the way for a science-based socialism, but also for further studies in sociology, history, and philosophy. To highlight the value and impact of Engels' work as well as emphasize its relevance for major issues that will determine the 21st century, the present anthology assembles scholars from different countries and research fields to discuss how to read and gain insights from reading his works in our time. It also attempts to stimulate further research about Engels, who 200 years after his birth deserves to be fully brought out of the shadow of his friend and colleague Karl Marx.

Download or read book Property and Freedom written by Richard Pipes and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A superb book about a topic that should be front and center in the American political debate" (National Review), from the acclaimed Harvard scholar and historian of the Russian Revolution An exploration of a wide range of national and political systems to demonstrate persuasively that private ownership has served over the centuries to limit the power of the state and enable democratic institutions to evolve and thrive in the Western world. Beginning with Greece and Rome, where the concept of private property as we understand it first developed, Richard Pipes then shows us how, in the late medieval period, the idea matured with the expansion of commerce and the rise of cities. He contrasts England, a country where property rights and parliamentary government advanced hand-in-hand, with Russia, where restrictions on ownership have for centuries consistently abetted authoritarian regimes; finally he provides reflections on current and future trends in the United States. Property and Freedom is a brilliant contribution to political thought and an essential work on a subject of vital importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
