Book excerpt: Where was the first organized indoor hockey game played? When did the tradition of engraving winners' names on the Stanley Cup start? Which six brothers collectively played in more than 5,000 NHL games? Answers to these questions and many more can be found in H is for Hockey: An NHL Alumni Alphabet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SPORTS/HOCKEY "Although Jimmy never played professional hockey himself, he was born with an intense love for the game and has devoted his life to hockey. He lives and breathes the game. Hockey is better off because of Jimmy Devellano." —From the Foreword by Mike and Marian Ilitch, Owners, Detroit Red Wings "Though he has never scored a goal, blocked a shot or thrown a body check, Jim Devellano contributed to seven Stanley Cup championships over three separate decades. An accomplishment of that magnitude is testament to his foresight, his insight and his hockey sense." —Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner "He is my mentor. He gave me my first opportunity to get into the business. When he came to Detroit, one of the things he talked about was he was never going to trade a draft pick. He's a tremendous architect." —Ken Holland, General Manager, Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings "He had what I would consider an outstanding career. He started from the very, very bottom and has worked his way up to, I would say, the top echelon in the league. I made him look so good, Mike Ilitch called me and stole him to Detroit." —Bill Torrey, Former General Manager, New York Islanders "He is a truly respected hockey man who deserves all accolades that have been presented to him. However, where he has helped me the most is in understanding the sports environment in the city of Detroit. Jimmy spent countless hours advising me on this sports landscape upon my arrival in Michigan." —Dave Dombrowski, President & General Manager, Detroit Tigers (MLB) "For more than the past 40 years Jim Devellano has had his hands on the hockey pulse. His remarkable accomplishments make him a Hockey Icon. Congratulations." —Scotty Bowman, Consultant, Detroit Red Wings

Book Shoot to Thrill

Download or read book Shoot to Thrill written by Mark Rosenman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, the National Hockey League adopted the shootout to settle ties in regular season games. The shootout is used if the game remains tied after five minutes of overtime. Ten years later, the shootout is one of the most significant and controversial rule changes in all of sports. Some maintain that the shootout erases a sixty-five-minute emotional rollercoaster between two teams—and that it’s wrong for games to be decided based on a one-on-one battle between a shooter and a goalie. Others argue that shootouts provide edge-of-your seat excitement as two supremely skilled players go head-to-head for all the marbles. Shoot to Thrill blends history, stats, and personal perspectives from players, coaches, officials, and broadcasters. Mark Rosenman and Howie Karpin explore how players and coaches prepare for shootouts, what they think of them, and how shootouts have helped shape hockey history over the past decade—including the shootout in the last game of the 2010 season that sent the Philadelphia Flyers into the playoffs and on to the Stanley Cup Finals. Some rule changes are instituted without anyone’s noticing. Others shake the game to its very foundations. Like the designated-hitter rule in baseball, hockey’s shootout has left no fan impartial to it. This is the book for them. • Author : Dennis Murphy
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013-04-03
  • ISBN : 9780983406044
  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Murph written by Dennis Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murph, the Sports Entrepreneur Man and His Leagues, is the captivating autobiography of Dennis Arthur Murphy, Sr., the energetic sports promoter who helped to found such professional leagues as the World Hockey Association, the American Basketball Association, World Team Tennis and Roller Hockey International. Jeanie Buss, the vice president of the Los Angeles Lakers, said that Dennis Murphy has connections so strong he can gather the top 10 sports moguls in a room with a single phone call. Murphy used those connections to build leagues that competed head to head with the entrenched National Hockey League and National Basketball Association. Murphy and his cohorts enticed Bobby Hull to flee the NHL to the WHA with an unprecedented $1 million contract and Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe, soon followed. The list of people Murphy reminisces about in Murph reads like a Who's Who of Sports in the 20th century and into the 21st - Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Scotty Bowman, Frank Mahovlich, Wayne Gretzky, George Mikan, Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry, George Gervin, Larry Brown and Bill Sharman. Murphy also hobnobbed with politicians and other celebrities. In 1967, Murphy and attorney Gary Davidson created the American Basketball Association, a league that eventually merged several teams into the NBA. Under Murphy's watch, the ABA became famous for its red, white and blue basketball, sideline cheerleaders, the 3-point shot and the slam dunk. The World Hockey Association debuted in 1972 and gave the more established National Hockey League fits by cannibalizing NHL rosters, placing teams in major cities that didn't host NHL teams, and successfully challenging the reserve clause that bound players to their teams. This victory gave NHL players the opportunity to split to the upstart league; 66 NHL players followed Bobby Hull's lead in the WHA's first year. The league disappeared in 1979, but not before four teams - the Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets - joined the NHL. Murphy co-founded World Team Tennis in 1973. League play began in 1974 with 16 teams, a four-color tennis court, and teams made up of two men and two women. This made WTT the first professional sports league to give equal weight to each man and woman competing for their teams. In 1992, Murphy, then 66 years old, was inspired to develop a new pro sport out of that decade's inline skating craze. RHI was the first pro full-contact league in which women played against men - Manon Rheaume, Kelly Dyer and Erin Whitten were RHI goalies. Murphy, now 86, is trying to create a new 6-foot-4 inches-and-under pro basketball league, a Women's Sports Walk of Fame and a new professional roller hockey league. Murphy might be the most unlikely, least known and most influential visionary in North American professional sports history, according to Richard Neil Graham, the editor of Murph. According to Graham, Murphy has a rather leprechaun-like stature, tall dreams, a gift of gab and the ability to bring together a diverse group of people to work toward a common goal. Humble and hilarious, with a touching and impressive old-school respect for women, an enduring love for his USC Trojans, and friendships lasting a half century and more, Dennis Arthur Murphy has extensive and illuminating sports memories. Read about Gordie Howe's hotel room being bugged by the Russians during the 1976-77 Super Series between WHA teams and teams from the USSR, how the WHA almost went with a red puck, how the owner of the Winnipeg Jets turned down Barbra Streisand as a singer at his nightclub, how Scotty Bowman kept Murphy and his Los Angeles Sharks from stealing Ken Dryden away from the Montreal Canadiens, and more. The 323-page book includes 20 pages of black and white photos and letters promoting Murphy to the Hockey and Basketball Halls of Fame.

Book excerpt: Hockey's Hardest Hitting Book More than a personal memoir, this book describes the author's experiences with the players, ownership, and management of the Philadelphia Flyers: one of the National Hockey League's (NHL's) premier teams. For over six decades, Larry Clay has been a fan and keen observer of ice hockey, both in the USA and internationally. He's also a former coach, administrator, and hockey equipment retailer. How the Broad Street Bullies Alumni were once nearly defeated by an amateur men's hockey team. Why the authors association with a former Flyer's Superstar went bad. The horrifying truth about the NHL and the NHLPA (the Players Union) and how much they really care about player safety. How the NHL (and government agencies) pushed the worst scandal in hockey history 'under the ice.' When Canada lost ownership of "their game" Plus much, much more! Writing in a blunt and direct style, Larry Clay takes you 'Behind The Orange Curtain' where each chapter tells a different story.
