It incorporates contributions on topics like instability analysis, localized and diffuse failure description, multi-scale modeling and applications to geo-environmental issues. This book will be valuable for anyone interested in the research on degradation and instabilities in geomechanics and geotechnical engineering, appealing to graduate students, researchers and engineers alike.

Book Geomechanics and Geotechnics of Particulate Media

Download or read book Geomechanics and Geotechnics of Particulate Media written by Masayuki Hyodo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microscopic re-examination of geomaterials consisting of aggregates can shed light on macroscopic behaviour, including compressibility, anisotropy, yielding, creep, cyclic liquefaction and shear rupture. As a result of this process of examination, new methods of material characterization emerge, leading to a greater degree of accuracy in the specification of new constitutive models with physically-meaningful parameters. The impetus behind this development is an increasing awareness on sustainability, leading to the more efficient use of recycled materials for geotechnical applications. The characteristics of recycled materials, such as compressibility and self-hardening, may differ significantly from those of natural materials, and it is crucial that evaluation is made from a specifically particulate perspective.

Book Soil Dynamics and Liquefaction

Download or read book Soil Dynamics and Liquefaction written by A.S. Cakmak and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite advances in the field of geotechnical earthquake engineering, earthquakes continue to cause loss of life and property in one part of the world or another. The Third International Conference on Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, USA, 22nd to 24th June 1987, provided an opportunity for participants from all over the world to share their expertise to enhance the role of mechanics and other disciplines as they relate to earthquake engineering. The edited proceedings of the conference are published in four volumes. This volume covers: Constitutive Relations in Soil Dynamics, Liquefaction of Soils, and Experimental Soil Dynamics. With its companion volumes, it is hoped that it will contribute to the further development of techniques, methods and innovative approaches in soil dynamics and earthquake engineering.

Book Validation of Dynamic Analyses of Dams and Their Equipment

Download or read book Validation of Dynamic Analyses of Dams and Their Equipment written by Jean-Jacques Fry and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Validation of Dynamic Analyses of Dams and Their Equipment is the outcome of a three year cooperation program between CFBR (Comite Francais des Barrages et Reservoirs or French Committee on Large dams) and JCOLD (Japan Commission on Large Dams), and focusses on the dynamic behavior of concrete and embankment dams analyzed based on acceleration records of the JCOLD data base. The book covers a broad range of topics, including simplified and detailed methods of dynamic analysis for the seismic response of concrete and embankment dams compared with measured behavior. The response of embankment dams subjected to a 1.0 g foundation acceleration time history is computed by several analytical methods and compared. The modelling of stress-strain behavior of compacted soils for seismic stability analysis of earth-fill dams and its application for a failed earthfill dam is described. The cracking of the face slab of four faced rockfill dams during earthquakes is analyzed. The seismic behavior of concrete arch dams is discussed by the comparison of numerical and experimental results. Displacement-based seismic assessment of concrete dams is presented. Finally the book contains a comparison between the Japanese and French design criteria of gates and a comparison of the analysis of gates and field measurements. Validation of Dynamic Analyses of Dams and Their Equipment will be useful to professional and academics involved or interested in dam engineering.

Book Measuring Anisotropic Elastic Properties of Sand Using a Large Triaxial Specimen

Download or read book Measuring Anisotropic Elastic Properties of Sand Using a Large Triaxial Specimen written by E. Hoque and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An advanced automated triaxial testing system developed to characterize elastic behavior of soils is described. Small axial and lateral strains of a large rectangular prismatic specimen were measured locally at various stress states along a specified stress path, which was achieved by automatically controlling axial load and confining pressure. Elastic deformation was measured by applying very small cycles of axial or lateral stress at each given neutral stress state. Typical test data for air-dried sand are presented. It is observed that the elastic Young's modulus is a rather unique function of the normal stress in the direction of the major principal strain increment, and therefore elastic deformation characteristics of sand become anisotropic under anisotropic stress conditions.

Book The Behavior of Sands Under Seismic Loading Conditions

Download or read book The Behavior of Sands Under Seismic Loading Conditions written by Marshall L. Silver and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume change characteristics and the dynamic stress-strain properties of dry sand subjected to cyclic shear strains have been investigated and used to check the applicability of a simple method for predicting the vertical settlements due to compaction in layers of dry cohesionless soils subjected to seismic loading conditions. Dynamic testing of a medium quartz sand, performed by repeated load simple shear equipment, indicated that the shear modulus increased slightly with increasing numbers of cycles and with increasing relative density and decreases significantly with increasing values of shear strain amplitude. Modulus values determined near the upper limit of shear strain amplitude that might be expected to be induced by seismic shaking (0.1 percent) were as much as 40 percent lower than modulus values obtained at the lowest values of shear strain that were investigated (0.01 percent).
