Book Adapting Safety Audits for Small Cities

Download or read book Adapting Safety Audits for Small Cities written by Keith Alan Haiar and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research, a practical approach to identifying street safety needs for local governments has been developed. These governments are responsible for high street mileage carrying relatively low traffic volumes. Improving safety on these streets is given only limited focus in most small cities. Due to the limited funding, manpower, and traffic engineering expertise available, traditional safety improvement programs generally are beyond the means of the agencies. An effective safety program must recognize the reality of local governments. A regional survey was conducted to examine current methods and practices used by city traffic safety programs. Results from the survey were used in development of the prototype Street Safety Audit procedure. A set of simple checklists covering fundamental intersection and traffic sign issues also were developed from this research. The Street Safety Audit procedure presented is a useful tool for small cities to begin addressing basic safety needs on their streets.

Book Roadway Safety Tools for Local Agencies

Download or read book Roadway Safety Tools for Local Agencies written by Eugene Madison Wilson and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2003 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 321: Roadway Safety Tools for Local Agencies examines the safety tools and procedures that are practical and relatively easy to apply, and that can be implemented by agencies with limited financial support and personnel. Recognizing the wide variation in the operations and responsibilities of local agencies, the report acknowledges that the level of expertise in transportation safety analysis also varies greatly.

Book CAREC Road Safety Engineering Manual 1

Download or read book CAREC Road Safety Engineering Manual 1 written by Asian Development Bank and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CAREC countries has committed to road safety as a key objective in implementing road projects. The road safety audit process will be an integral part of the planning, design, and construction of road projects within the CAREC region. Research indicates that up to 28% of crashes are due to the road environment. The most important objective of road safety audit is to minimize crashes, and to minimize the severity of any crashes that may occur on a new road project. The series of road safety engineering manuals of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program came from the endorsement of the CAREC Road Safety Strategy 2017-2030 by member countries. The strategy supports and encourages CAREC authorities to plan, design, construct, and maintain safe roads. This manual also explains the road safety audit process as it can apply in CAREC road projects. It provides information about the audit process for those who undertake the audits (practitioners) and for those who manage the audit process (policy makers).

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this research was to investigate the characteristics of fatal crashes and risk factors to these crashes in the work zones so that effective countermeasures could be developed and implemented in the near future. The objective was accomplished using a four-step approach.

Book Global Status Report on Road Safety 2015

Download or read book Global Status Report on Road Safety 2015 written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Global status report on road safety 2015, reflecting information from 180 countries, indicates that worldwide the total number of road traffic deaths has plateaued at 1.25 million per year, with the highest road traffic fatality rates in low-income countries. In the last three years, 17 countries have aligned at least one of their laws with best practice on seat-belts, drink-driving, speed, motorcycle helmets or child restraints. While there has been progress towards improving road safety legislation and in making vehicles safer, the report shows that the pace of change is too slow. Urgent action is needed to achieve the ambitious target for road safety reflected in the newly adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: halving the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes by 2020. Made possible through funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies, this report is the third in the series, and provides a snapshot of the road safety situation globally, highlighting the gaps and the measures needed to best drive progress."--Publisher's description.

Book A Guide for Achieving Flexibility in Highway Design

Download or read book A Guide for Achieving Flexibility in Highway Design written by and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2004 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Context-sensitive solutions (CSS) reflect the need to consider highway projects as more than just transportation facilities. Depending on how highway projects are integrated into the community, they can have far-reaching impacts beyond their traffic or transportation function. CSS is a comprehensive process that brings stakeholders together in a positive, proactive environment to develop projects that not only meet transportation needs, but also improve or enhance the community. Achieving a flexible, context-sensitive design solution requires designers to fully understand the reasons behind the processes, design values, and design procedures that are used. This AASHTO Guide shows highway designers how to think flexibly, how to recognize the many choices and options they have, and how to arrive at the best solution for the particular situation or context. It also strives to emphasize that flexible design does not necessarily entail a fundamentally new design process, but that it can be integrated into the existing transportation culture. This publication represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state transportation departments and other agencies charged with transportation project development.
