Book Defensible Methods of Assessing Fish Habitat

Download or read book Defensible Methods of Assessing Fish Habitat written by W.F. Baird and Associates, Coastal Engineers and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedures now exist to quantify the impacts of physical changes on productive capacity of fish habitat. These procedures allow the evaluation of pre- and post-development scenarios, including any compensatory measures. This report applies these procedures to two case studies consisting of the construction of a 150-metre long headland in Hamilton Harbour and the construction of marina breakwaters in the Bronte Outer Harbour, Lake Ontario. The investigations focused on evaluating the indirectly modified areas, or those affected by changes to wave and current patterns caused by the presence of the new development. Specific impacts examined include changes to surficial substrate and depth, changes to macrophyte coverage, changes to wave conditions, and the relationship between physical processes and macrophyte growth. A new criterion for limiting local wave conditions associated with the survival of macrophytes is proposed and recommendations are made to refine and substantiate such a criterion.

Book Defensible Methods for Pre and Post development Assessment of Fish Habitat in the Great Lakes I

Download or read book Defensible Methods for Pre and Post development Assessment of Fish Habitat in the Great Lakes I written by Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a prototype methodology for use in the Great Lakes for pre- and post-development assessment of inshore fish habitat, focusing on shoreline development projects that involve construction of headlands or offshore structures such as islands. The purpose of the methodology is to provide a quantitative, defensible assessment protocol which project proponents and fish managers can use to assess compliance of projects with the federal policy of no net loss of fish habitat in development. The protocol combines published habitat requirements of three thermal guilds of Great Lakes fishes with areal estimation of lost or modified inshore habitat. The method also attempts to estimate adjacent habitat indirectly affected by the structures. A case study of a marina in Hamilton Harbour illustrates use of the protocol in assessing such matters as the effect of the development on fish habitat suitability and fish productivity.

Book Aquatic Habitat Assessment

Download or read book Aquatic Habitat Assessment written by Mark B. Bain and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Habitat is now the basis of most impact assessments and resource inventories, and it is the basis of many species management plans, mitigation planning, and environmental regulation. Habitats are relatively stable through time, easily defined in intuitive physical terms, and provide a tangible resource for negotiations and decision making. Numerous and varied methods of analyzing and reporting habitat conditions have been developed by federal, state, provincial, and private agencies. Habitat assessment approaches vary greatly among regions of the continent. The great variability in methods and an unusually wide range of practices have impeded the ability of agencies to share and synthesize information. A diversity of methods is desirable in the initial stages of a rapidly developing field, but enough time has passed to assess the state-of-knowledge and identify the best of the currently used methods and techniques. This manual is intended to provide fisheries biologists with a limited set of techniques for obtaining aquatic habitat data. The manual also describes the range of information collected and used in agency habitat analyses. Agencies planning habitat programs should review the synthesis of established and documented methods being used in North America (Appendix 1) and the planning recommendations in Chapter 2. Then, the remaining chapters should be reviewed to determine what types of habitat data should be included in the agency's program.

Book Assessing Fish Habitat Supply and Potential Responses to Habitat Manipulation in Small Canadian Shield Lakes

Download or read book Assessing Fish Habitat Supply and Potential Responses to Habitat Manipulation in Small Canadian Shield Lakes written by T. Frezza and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study applies the Habitat Suitability Matrix model to assess fish habitat supply and potential responses to habitat manipulations that have been undertaken in three small lakes in Northern Ontario. Fish habitat within the lakes was manipulated by removing wood cover, and in one lake, by adding artificial substrate. The defensible methods approach of Mills & Nairn (1999) and Minns et al. (2001) was applied to estimate changes in habitat supply and to provide a set of a priori predictions of expected effects on fish populations in these lakes. Results are presented from analyses conducted in two ways, one using the list of species present in each lake and another using a generic species list representing those occurring in the tertiary watershed where the lakes are located.

Book Inland Fisheries

Download or read book Inland Fisheries written by and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current high demand for fish and increased awareness of the role of the environment in supporting human well being has led to a situation where attitudes to inland water resources are changing rapidly. Trends in resource use and environmental impact are very evident in inland waters which are particularly vulnerable as they act as collectors of all the activities occurring in their basins and rank as some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. The principle changes influencing the evolution of the aquatic resource for fisheries are described in this book, which has been compiled for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
