Book Defense Science Board Report on Advanced Computing

Download or read book Defense Science Board Report on Advanced Computing written by United States. Defense Science Board and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report of the DSB Task Force on NNSA's Strategic Plan for Advanced Computing. The Task Force was asked to evaluate NNSA's strategic plan for Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) and its adequacy to support the Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP), whose mission is to ensure the safety, performance and reliability of our Nation's nuclear weapons stockpile. The Task Force was also asked to evaluate the role of ASC in maintaining US leadership in advanced computing and assess the impact of using ASC's capabilities for broader national security and other issues. The Task Force concluded that, since the cessation of nuclear testing, ASC has taken on the principal integrating role in assuring the long term safety and reliability of the stockpile. It is also an essential tool in addressing specific stockpile issues. Furthermore, ASC has played a leadership role in reestablishing US leadership in high performance computing. The use of ASC and ASC-derived technology for other national security, scientific, and commercial applications has also increased dramatically, and high performance computing is viewed as an extremely valuable and cost-effective approach to many of the user's important problems. However, it is not likely that ASC will meet the compelling goals stated in its roadmaps and planning documents at the currently projected levels of funding. Furthermore, the high end of the US computing industry may be negatively impacted with implications for the much broader range of potential users in the DOD, other federal agencies, and the commercial world. Accordingly, the Task Force strongly recommends sizing the budget of ASC to meet its nuclear weapons objectives and retain US leadership in advanced computing.

Book Report of the Defense Science Board Task Force on Military Applications of New Generation Computing Technologies

Download or read book Report of the Defense Science Board Task Force on Military Applications of New Generation Computing Technologies written by DEFENSE SCIENCE BOARD WASHINGTON DC. and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Task Force members were carefully selected to provide a wide range of impartial views on military applications and the probabilities these applications have for success within the Strategic Computing Program. They come from Defense, industry, and the research and development (R & D) community (universities and other not-for-profit organizations). The Task Force sought to discover the critical military questions to which machine intelligence technology is the potential answer. This was done with the recognition that: (1) Machine intelligence capabilities are not widely understood. (2) Few needs have been established in developmental areas accessible to an unclassified inquiry. (3) Technologists are currently walking the difficult line between being banal and fantastical. (4) Universities have an existing momentum which is different from the applications orientation needed for military demonstrations. (5) The military programs are not knee-jerk responses to Japanese programs in Fifth Generation Computing. They are serious technological R & D activities. Successful military applications will require both machine intelligence technology and computer hardware development.

Book Report of the Defense Science Board Task Force on Computer Applications to Training and Wargaming

Download or read book Report of the Defense Science Board Task Force on Computer Applications to Training and Wargaming written by DEFENSE SCIENCE BOARD WASHINGTON DC. and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer-based, simulated scenarios offer the only practical and affordable means to improve the training of joint operational commanders, their staffs, and the commanders and staffs who report to them. Such decision makers need the opportunity to exercise their decision skills, to test war plans, and to train to work as a closely coordinated force. Increasingly, joint training cannot be conducted in the anticipated theater of operations. There are political objections to disruption of civil activity. The cost of an actual exercise at this level is great. Battle simulation offers the only opportunity to practice the use of certain weapon systems, sensors, tactics, and techniques against a skilled adversary. Today, it is possible to make a substantive improvement to computer-assisted joint training and wargaming. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff asked the Defense Science Board to develop a plan to integrate anticipated advanced in computer technology to support training and wargaming for joint warfighting. Book The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

Download or read book The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-04-29 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews and updates the 2002 National Research Council report, Technical Issues Related to the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). This report also assesses various topics, including: the plans to maintain the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile without nuclear-explosion testing; the U.S. capability to detect, locate, and identify nuclear explosions; commitments necessary to sustain the stockpile and the U.S. and international monitoring systems; and potential technical advances countries could achieve through evasive testing and unconstrained testing. Sustaining these technical capabilities will require action by the National Nuclear Security Administration, with the support of others, on a strong scientific and engineering base maintained through a continuing dynamic of experiments linked with analysis, a vigorous surveillance program, adequate ratio of performance margins to uncertainties. This report also emphasizes the use of modernized production facilities and a competent and capable workforce with a broad base of nuclear security expertise.
