Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent revelations about Iraqi and Soviet/Russian biological weapons programs and highly publicized events such as the deployment of anthrax and botulinum by the Aum Shinrikyo sect in Japan have made clear the necessity for addressing the issues of biological warfare and defense. In a comprehensive analysis of this imminent threat to global security, fourteen internationally recognized authorities consider the motivations of governments and terrorist groups seeking to acquire biological weapons; managing the consequences of a biological attack; techniques for weapons development; methods for detection of pathogens and toxins; defense against biological weapons; and international efforts to counter their proliferation.

Book Medical Defense Against Protein Toxin Weapons

Download or read book Medical Defense Against Protein Toxin Weapons written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "toxin weapon" has been used to describe poisons, classically of natural origin but increasingly accessible by modern synthetic methods, which are suitable for delivery on a battlefield in a form that causes death or severe incapacitation at relatively low concentrations. Several of the most important toxin weapons are proteins, and these molecules are the focus of this chapter. Recent technological changes have increased the importance of protein toxins for biological warfare (BW): (a) progress in biotechnology has made large-scale production and purification feasible for a larger number of protein toxins; (b) molecular biology techniques, especially the polymerase chain reaction, have enabled the identification, isolation and comparison of extended families of previously obscure natural toxins; and (c) gene manipulation and microbiology have greatly expanded the accessible delivery vehicles for protein toxins to include, for example, natural or genetically modified bacteria and engineered viruses.

Book Biological and Toxin Weapons

Download or read book Biological and Toxin Weapons written by Erhard Geissler and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary book analyzes the origins of biological warfare planning and preparation up to the end of World War II. In the period between the world wars, growing understanding of the propagation of disease lead to the fear that potential enemies might be developing biological weapons, with several countries ultimately developing major biological warfare programs during World War II. The relevance of these programs to contemporary concerns is addressed and sheds light on arguments for adoption of a verification protocol to strengthen the 1972 Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.

Book Toxin and Bioregulator Weapons

Download or read book Toxin and Bioregulator Weapons written by Michael Crowley and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how revolutionary developments and convergence of the chemical, life and associated sciences are impacting contemporary toxin and bioregulator research, and examines the risks of such research being misused for malign purposes. Investigating illustrative cases of dual use research of potential concern in China, India, Iran, Russia, Syria and the USA, the authors discuss how states can ensure such research and related activities are not utilised in weapons development. Although toxins and bioregulators are, in theory, covered by both the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention and Chemical Weapons Convention, this apparent overlap in reality masks a dangerous regulatory gap – with neither Convention implemented effectively to address threats of weaponisation. This book highlights the potentially damaging consequences for international peace and security, and proposes realistic routes for action by states and the scientific community.

Book Defence Against Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism

Download or read book Defence Against Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism written by NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Defence Against Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2009-06-26 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Defence Against Weapons of Mass Destruction Terrorism the editors examined the class of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) for terrorist use, and have found that their effects range from serious nuisance value up to catastrophic destruction of a large urban area. There are some differences in the effects depending on whether they are used against military or civilian targets, whether they are used from inside the target area or outside, and between those weapons for which MOPP (Mission Oriented Protective Posture) gear can provide useful protection (Biological Weapons, Chemical Weapons) and those for which it often cannot (radiation, nuclear explosions). These are useful ways to begin thinking about establishing protocols for protecting our armed forces and the civilian population they are sworn to defend.
