Book excerpt: For 2,000 years Essex, the county with the longest coast-line in England and dominating the eastern approaches to London, has been in the front-line against foreign invasion, from the Romans to the Spanish Armada to the two World Wars. It has also been involved in civil disorder, from the Anarchy and the Peasants’ Revolt to the English Civil War. Many reminders of these scenes of conflict may be seen in the landscape - Iron Age forts, a Roman walled town, medieval castles, strong-houses and homestead moats, coastal fortifications from Napoleonic times and earlier, and Victorian barracks and the drill halls of the Volunteers. From the twentieth century there are still more sites: military airfields from the First World War and Battle of Britain fighter airfields, radar sites and later bomber bases from the Second. Anti-invasion defenses line the coast, linear defenses criss-cross the landscape, and AA sites are everywhere to be found. Taking the story all the way up to the nuclear threat of the Cold War, this guide will interest residents and visitors alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much maligned, Essex is a vibrant county with a long and exciting history. Being close to the Continent and with one of Britains longest coastlines, it was an obvious target for invasion as the threat of war grew. Many defensive structures were built by the sea and to protect major routes across the county. The remains of pill boxes can still be seen.Essex at War 1939–1945 tells how war greatly affected the county: children were evacuated both to and from Essex; being close to London the county suffered from regular air attacks; farming was important and the Womens Land Army arrived in force. Accounts of Essex airmen and sailors who supported those escaping from Dunkirk are told, and once the USA entered the war there was a new type of invasion in the county when their servicemen arrived and were welcomed at many of the countys airfields.Memories of children growing up during those difficult years are recalled. These include nights spent in cold, damp Anderson shelters, sleeping under solid tables or in claustrophobic Morrison shelters. We learn about disrupted school lessons and the fear felt when the air raid siren wailed. When the V-1 and V-2 unmanned flying bombs were launched in 1944, many still remember listening for the engines to switch off and counting the seconds until they fell to earth.

Book Religion and politics in Elizabethan England

Download or read book Religion and politics in Elizabethan England written by Neil Younger and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reassesses the religious politics of Elizabethan England through a study of one of its most unusual figures. Sir Christopher Hatton, a royal favourite turned senior minister, was unique among Elizabeth’s leading ministers in being a consistent supporter of English Catholics and perhaps even some kind of Catholic himself. His influence over the queen was a significant factor in restraining the policy preferences of Elizabeth’s more strongly Protestant advisors, particularly as regards the regime’s religious policy. The book traces Hatton’s life and career, his relationship with Elizabeth, his networks and his involvement in politics. It argues that Hatton’s career casts doubt on claims that Elizabeth’s regime was exclusively Protestant in character and suggests that Catholics and Catholic sympathisers retained a voice in Elizabethan politics.

Book Defending The Island

Book excerpt: In a brilliantly imaginative blend of military, social and diplomatic history, Norman Longmate retells our island story from the perspective of its defenders, in a narrative which stretches from the Celtic tribes who unsuccessfully fought against Ceasar to the great seabourne defence against the Armada of Philip of Spain. He has gone back to the original sources and investigated the original battlegrounds and weak spots in Britain's defences. But the real strength of his book is its seamless narrative of history, which uncovers the truth behind the legends. A mass of solidly researched fact, not readily found elsewhere, is seasoned with lively, humorous and occassionally gruesome anecdote. The result, providing at once an invaluable sourcebook for the specialist and an enthralling narrative for the general reader, is by far the most comprehensive and accessible history of England versus invasion ever published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by nationally recognized insurance law practitioners and academics, Insurance Practices and Coverage in Liability Defense, Second Edition (formerly titled Defending the Insured) provides the first comprehensive and objective analysis of the various duties and potential pitfalls confronting each party in the three-way relationship between insurance carrier, insured, and the appointed counsel in insurance defense. Topics covered include: The use of staff counsel Billing guidelines Audits of attorneysand’ fees Reservations of rights Communication privileges and issues, and cooperation duties Conflicts of interest, control of the defense including independent counsel Allocation of defense costs between insurer and insured Allocation of indemnity expense between insurer and insured Allocation and determination of deductibles and SIRs Coverage allocation in multi-year, continuing loss cases, including horizontal and vertical exhaustion, stacking, and and“all sumsand” Application and features of judicial remedies of declaratory relief and intervention Insurance Practices and Coverage in Liability Defense, Second Edition is the book that combines practice and theory, that serves both the insurer and insured, the national practitioner and the local counsel, and informs courts where concurrence and divergence exist on the sometimes thorny, interrelated issues.
