Book excerpt: Containing the proceedings of the second International Conference on Defence Sites, Heritage and Future this book promotes the knowledge of the scale, design and functions of defence sites. It brings a better understanding of the issues raised by their redundancy and the implications of different disposal processes for the land. Redundant defence sites offer a range of opportunities to planners, architects and local communities to redevelop large areas, bringing new life to often neglected parts of towns. These opportunities are common to many countries and the papers in this book stress this common feature and help to share experiences of the transformation of defence sites to civilian uses around the world. The re-use of defence sites also raises questions regarding the need to recover brownfields and contaminated land which can have far-reaching legal responsibilities and environmental consequences. Achieving the sustainable development of these sites involves issues related to maintenance and conservation, as well as built and natural environmental controls, while also responding to the needs and aspirations of the community. Topics covered include: Military heritage history; Castles and fortresses; Fortified cities; Case studies; Transition from military to civilian life; Community involvement; Economic analysis; Risk assessment; Simulation and modelling; Funding and legal requirements.

Book excerpt: Containing the proceedings of the third International Conference on Defence Sites: Heritage and Future, this book deals with the scale, design and functions of defence sites. It facilitates a better understanding of the issues raised by their decommissioning and the implications of various disposal processes for the land. Defence sites due to be decommissioned offer a range of opportunities to planners, architects and local communities to redevelop large areas, bringing new life to previously neglected parts of towns. However, the re-use of defence sites also raises questions regarding the recovery of brownfields and contaminated land, since these can have far-reaching legal responsibilities and environmental consequences. Achieving the sustainable development of these sites involves issues related to maintenance and conservation, as well as built and natural environmental controls, while also responding to the needs and aspirations of the community. Many of the opportunities and problems in the re-use of defence sites are shared by a number of countries and the book stresses these common experiences. Topics covered include: Fortified cities; Community involvement; Economic analysis; Risk assessment; Simulation and modelling; Funding and legal requirements; Military engineering in the modern age; Conservation and restoration; Transition from military to civilian uses; Fortified heritage, culture, tourism & education; Military heritage history; Castles and fortresses; Case studies.

Book Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century

Download or read book Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century written by Australian Government - Department of Defence - Defence Publishing Service and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Defence White Paper explains how the Government plans to strengthen the foundations of Australia's defence. It sets out the Government's plans for Defence for the next few years, and how it will achieve those plans. Most importantly, it provides an indication of the level of resources that the Government is planning to invest in Defence over coming years and what the Government, on behalf of the Australian people, expects in return from Defence. Ultimately, armed forces exist to provide Governments with the option to use force. Maintaining a credible defence capability is a crucial contributor to our security, as it can serve to deter potential adversaries from using force against us or our allies, partners and neighbours.

Book Sustainable Regeneration of Former Military Sites

Download or read book Sustainable Regeneration of Former Military Sites written by Samer Bagaeen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Regeneration of Former Military Sites is the first book to analyze a profound land use change happening all over the world: the search for sustainable futures for property formerly dedicated to national defense now becoming redundant, disposed of and redeveloped. The new military necessity for rapid flexible response requires quite different physical resources from the massive fixed positions of the Cold War, with huge tracts of land and buildings looking for new uses. The transition from military to civilian life for these complex, contaminated, isolated, heritage laden and often contested sites in locations ranging from urban to remote is far from easy. There is very little systematic analysis of what follows base closures, leaving communities, governments, developers, and planners experimenting with untested land use configurations, partnership structures, and financing strategies. With twelve case studies drawn from different countries, many written by those involved, Sustainable Regeneration of Former Military Sites enables the diverse stakeholders in these projects to discover unique opportunities for reuse and learn from others’ experiences of successful regeneration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Book Security and Defence in South West England Before 1800

Download or read book Security and Defence in South West England Before 1800 written by Robert Higham and published by University of Exeter Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Roman times down to the eighteenth century, the South West of England comprised a striking example of the importance of matters of security and defence to a local society easily threatened by external enemies and by internal conflicts and tensions. In Security and Defence in South-West England Valerie A. Maxfield examines the problems of internal security from the point of view of the Roman army, as it held down newly-conquered territory. Robert Higham considers the variety of responses - notably in the form of fortifications - which medieval society offered to external as well as internal problems. Joyce Youings analyses the particular difficulties of organising the local militia in the Tudor period. Anne Duffin and Ivan Roots adopt a Cornish perspective on problems of defence in the seventeenth century. And David J. Starkey considers the interplay of trade and security in the eighteenth century, as witnessed in the contribution of the North Atlantic fishing industry to the manning of the Royal Navy. Over all, these studies provide a fascinating series of vignettes illustrating perennial and enduring problems in the history of the British Isles.

Book Managing the Defence Estate

Download or read book Managing the Defence Estate written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-03-23 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ministry of Defence has a worldwide estate valued at some £18 billion and is the second largest landowner in the UK. The total annual operating cost of the estate was estimated at £3.3 million in 2005-06. This report, following on from an earlier report in 2005 (ISBN 9780102932768), looks at the changes introduced to reverse the deterioration in the quality of the estate and also the programme of estate rationalisation. It is in two parts, the first is entitled 'delivering an estate of the right quality' and the second 'managing, measuring and planning'. The conclusion is that new arrangements have improved the delivery of estate services, however it is still too early to say that this will result in a better quality estate. For this to happen there needs to be continued commitment, supplier innovation and client leadership, with sufficient stability of funding.
