Book excerpt: In this debut short story collection from Jerry McGahan, nature in all its fascinating, perplexing, and maddening varieties intercedes with the complex yearnings, courtings, departings, and returnings of the human characters who inhabit the fringes of wilderness in contemporary Montana. Comprised of short fiction selected over a 20-year period, The Deer Walking Upside Down invites readers into a world where hard work and an abiding respect for all things wild inform the lives of this rural paradise, yet not without a price. As men and women reconcile passion and inclination, love and the wreckage of aging, there is always work to be done: fences to be repaired, hives to be tended to, livestock to be fed, and loves to be fostered. Steeped in the tradition of Jim Harrison and Tom McGuane, this collection marks the arrival of a distinct voice in the contemporary Western literary landscape.

Download or read book Spirit of the Buffalo written by Stan Mirel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I started writing my first western I began without a story, a title but with two unwashed characters that hated each other at first in the dark, filthy, cluttered log cabin so remotely embedded in the Canadian snow covered woods that escape on foot was impossible. After two murders occurred our heroine Marie is alone, raised without affection or a smile with only a fur trapper father escaped from prison. She finds herself alone until Peter Mark with a broken leg is fished out of the river with his horse and wagon. After months of fighting and distrust in the filthy hovel, they find love and Peter begins the trek to his home in Nevada in a wagon with Marie. They come to a Nez Perce village where Peter trades with Chief Joseph for three white women and continues south through Flathead land and into Shoshoni Territory where Chief Running Deer learns the buffalo follow Peter and thinks he controls them and calls him the Spirit of The Buffalo. With two scouts from the Nez Perce, two from the Flathead and two from Chief Running Deer they continue south and the scouts leave them at Fort Bryant. Peter thinks hell take Marie to his house but Running Deer decides to burn the fort and sends word to the Spirit of The Buffalo. Take everyone out of the fort and all that ride with you are safe. Col. Williams decides to stay and defend but Peter takes the women and children to Fort Halleck as Running Deer attacks Fort Bryant. Peter and Marie adopt Linda, the youngest of the three captive females they traded for with Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. Thats not half of the story but youll dry your eyes before turning the last page of the Spirit of The Buffalo and when the sequel, War Chief comes out, youll cry again and better understand our Native American brothers.

A companion volume to A Literary Field Guide to Southern Appalachia, this guide introduces the reader to seventy indigenous species found in Northern Appalachia, a region comprising parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. As a hybrid literary and natural history anthology, the book consists of descriptions and notes on habitat, range, and ecology provided by six scientists with expertise in the region’s flora and fauna. In addition, eleven artists and seventy poets have provided original artwork and poetry that illuminate the lives of the greater-than-human world. Defying easy stereotypes, the guide presents trees, shrubs, wildflowers and mammals, birds and fish, reptiles and amphibians, and invertebrates and fungi. Love and wonder for these ancient mountains and their ever-evolving residents flood the pages of this book, inviting the reader into a deeper way of knowing a place and the lives dependent on it.

Download or read book The Deer Camp written by Dean Kuipers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers of The Stranger in the Woods and H Is for Hawk, a beautifully written and emotionally rewarding memoir about a father, his three sons, and a scrappy 100-acre piece of land in rural Michigan. Some families have to dig hard to find the love that holds them together. Some have to grow it out of the ground. Bruce Kuipers was good at hunting, fishing, and working, but not at much else that makes a real father or husband. Conflicted, angry, and a serial cheater, he destroyed his relationship with his wife, Nancy, and alienated his three sons-journalist Dean, woodsman Brett, and troubled yet brilliant fisherman Joe. He distrusted people and clung to rural America as a place to hide. So when Bruce purchased a 100-acre hunting property as a way to reconnect with his sons, they resisted. The land was the perfect bait, but none of them knew how to be together as a family. Conflicts arose over whether the land-an old farm that had been degraded and reduced to a few stands of pine and blowing sand-should be left alone or be actively restored. After a decade-long impasse, Bruce acquiesced, and his sons proceeded with their restoration plan. What happened next was a miracle of nature. Dean Kuipers weaves a beautiful and surprising story about the restorative power of land and of his own family, which so desperately needed healing. Heartwarming and profound, The Deer Camp is the perfect story of fathers, sons, and the beauty and magic of the natural world.
