Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cutting-edge textbook examines contemporary media business models in the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation. AI has dramatically impacted media production and distribution, from recommendation engines to synthetic humans, from video-to-text tools to natural language models. "AI is really the change agent of the media industry," answered a natural language generation model when AI was ‘asked’ about the subject of this book. "It will open incredible opportunities." This book seeks to explore them. The media is examined through four sections. ‘Principles’ maps business models and the key tools of AI. ‘Platforms’ covers distribution channels in Games, Streamers, Social Networks, Broadcast and Digital Publishing. ‘Producers’ covers the engines of content-making, including Scripted, Entertainment, Factual, Content Marketing, Creators and Music. Finally, ‘Pioneers’ covers emerging sectors of Podcasting, Esports, the Metaverse and other AI-driven developments. Then in each chapter, a standard value creation model is applied, mapping a single sector through development, production, distribution and monetisation. Diverse case studies are analysed from India, Nigeria, South Korea, South Africa, France, the Netherlands, the US, the UK, Denmark and China – around creative entrepreneurship, revenue models, profit drivers, rights and emerging AI tools. Questions are provided for each case, whilst chapter summaries cement learning. Applied and technology-focused, this text offers core reading for advanced undergraduate and postgraduates studying Media Management – or the relationship between Entertainment, Media and Technology. Online resources include chapter-by-chapter PowerPoint slides and an Instructor’s Manual with further exercises and case studies.

Download or read book Beyond Ukraine written by Tim Sweijs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War in the 21st century will remain a chameleon that takes on different forms and guises. This book offers the first comprehensive update and revision of ideas about the future of war since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It argues that the war has fundamentally shifted our perspective on the nature and character of future war, but also cautions against marginalizing many other parallel trends, types of war, and ways of waging them. World-renowned international experts from the War Studies field consider the impact of the war in Ukraine on the broader social phenomenon of war: they analyze visions of future war; examine the impact of technological innovation on its conduct; assess our ability to anticipate its future; and consider lessons learned for leaders, soldiers, strategists, scholars and concerned citizens. Beyond Ukraine features contributions from Azar Gat, Beatrice Heuser, Antulio Echevarria, Audrey Cronin, T.X. Hammes, Kenneth Payne, Frank Hoffman, David Betz, Jan Willem Honig, and many other pre-eminent thinkers on the past, present and future of war--including an afterword by the late Christopher Coker.

Book First Platoon

Download or read book First Platoon written by Annie Jacobsen and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful story of war in our time, of love of country, the experience of tragedy, and a platoon at the center of it all. This is a story that starts off close and goes very big. The initial part of the story might sound familiar at first: it is about a platoon of mostly nineteen-year-old boys sent to Afghanistan, and an experience that ends abruptly in catastrophe. Their part of the story folds into the next: inexorably linked to those soldiers and never comprehensively reported before is the U.S. Department of Defense’s quest to build the world’s most powerful biometrics database, with the ability to identify, monitor, catalog, and police people all over the world. First Platoon is an American saga that illuminates a transformation of society made possible by this new technology. Part war story, part legal drama, it is about identity in the age of identification. About humanity—physical bravery, trauma, PTSD, a yearning to do right and good—in the age of biometrics, which reduce people to iris scans, fingerprint scans, voice patterning, detection by odor, gait, and more. And about the power of point of view in a burgeoning surveillance state. Based on hundreds of formerly classified documents, FOIA requests, and exclusive interviews, First Platoon is an investigative exposé by a master chronicler of government secrets. First Platoon reveals a post–9/11 Pentagon whose identification machines have grown more capable than the humans who must make sense of them. A Pentagon so powerful it can cover up its own internal mistakes in pursuit of endless wars. And a people at its mercy, in its last moments before a fundamental change so complete it might be impossible to take back.

Book Decoding Generative AI

Download or read book Decoding Generative AI written by Farabi Shayor and published by IntelX Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of Generative AI has marked a significant turning point, heralding a new age of innovation and intellectual exploration. Much like a compelling narrative, this advancement in artificial intelligence has captivated the global community and ushered in an unprecedented surge of innovation. For many years, the subtle hum of AI has been interconnected into the fabric of our society. Devices such as Echo (Alexa) and Google Home, once considered avant-garde, are now seamlessly integrated into our homes and vehicles, becoming essential navigators in our daily journeys. However, this new phase of AI evolution is distinct. Capable of enhanced ability, these new generative AI systems could easily discern the intuitive needs of their end-users. With a mere command or a simple image, generative AI systems can draft comprehensive reports, write legal documents, or produce intricate visual masterpieces. Their proficiency can also be extended to routine and mundane tasks, smoothly managing administrative duties, writing correspondences, and providing invaluable support in professional settings. Although these foundation models require a vast amount of training data and billions of parameters to be effective, the outcomes are equally remarkable. Technology companies and investors, recognising the potential, embarked on an investment spree; steering a new era for the development of specialised models such as Microsoft CoPilot, Midjourney, ChatGPT, and so on. As these technology companies continue to improve their language models, each version seems to be more refined than its predecessor. Foremost among these are the Large Language Models (LLMs), emblematic of this AI renaissance. Now, with voice-activated capabilities, generative AIs have become capable of much more in the relatively short span of their existence. With the integration of voice-activated features, combined with their capabilities to speak like a human being, their potential continues to grow exponentially. They aren’t labelled as ‘chatbots’ anymore – these AI systems signify a technological paradigm shift, reshaping humanity’s understanding of technology, automation, and creative expression. However, with such shift comes the imperative need for governance and control. The unchecked expansion of AI poses unmitigated challenges. In reality, these advanced AIs have the potential to be transformative and destructive parallelly. Thus, it is necessary to establish guidelines and oversight to ensure the ethical deployment of such systems which this book focuses on. As society stands at this transformative crossroads, parallels are being drawn to the imaginative world of fiction. The concept of ‘Jarvis’ AI from the fictitious world appears provocatively close to becoming a reality. The epoch of generative AI has truly dawned, promising a future where technological prowess and human aspiration unite.

Download or read book e Services written by Alfredo M. Ronchi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores various e-Services related to health, learning, culture, media and the news, and the influences the Web and related technologies have had and continue to have in each of these areas, both on service providers and service users. It provides insights into the main technological and human issues regarding healthcare, aging population, recent challenges in the educational environment, the impact of digital technologies on culture and heritage, cultural diversity, freedom of expression, intellectual property, fake news and, last but not least, public opinion manipulation and ethical issues. Its main aim is to bridge the gap between technological solutions, their successful implementation, and the fruitful utilization of the main set of e-Services mostly delivered by private or public companies. Today, various parameters actively influence e-Services’ success or failure: cultural aspects, organisational and privacy issues, bureaucracy and workflows, infrastructure and technology in general, user habits, literacy, capacity or merely interaction design. This includes having a significant population of citizens who are willing and able to adopt and use online services; as well as developing the managerial and technical capability to implement applications that meet citizens’ needs. This book helps readers understand the mutual dependencies involved; further, a selection of success stories and failures, duly commented on, enables readers to identify the right approach to innovation in areas that offer the opportunity to reach a wide audience with minimal effort. With its balanced humanistic and technological approach, the book mainly targets public authorities, decision-makers, stakeholders, solution developers, and graduate students.
