Book excerpt: From Abstract: Muusoctopus leioderma is a deep-sea octopus that was recently observed at a depth of 12 meters in Burrows Bay, Washington. Currently, little is known about the ecology of this octopus, as previous information has been limited to specimens collected by trawl and ROV observations. However, understanding what M. leioderma eats is important because octopuses are adaptable, generalist predators with high metobolic rates. This means that M. leioderma may play a substantial role in trophic dynamics in Burrows Bay. To better understand the diet of M. leioderma, I collected [S]13C and [S]15N stable isotope values from 14 M. leioderma individuals. I also collected [S]13C and [S]15N values from 32 potential prey items from two isotopically distinct groups: infauna and epifauna. Mixing model analysis of octopus and prey isotope values indicates that M. leioderma is eating predominantly infauna and that the proportion of infauna consumed by M. leioderma increases with octopus mass. I also analyzed DNA in M. leioderma feces using PCR. Results indicate that octopus feces may contain PCR inhibitors. More research is needed to develop methods for successfully extracting and amplifying DNA from octopus stool.
