Download or read book Biodiversity and Distribution of the Deep sea Fauna in the Sea of Japan and in the Kuril Kamchatka Trench Area with Focus on Isopoda as a Model Organism written by Nikolaus Elsner and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the diversity and distribution of the deep-sea fauna of the Northwest Pacific, more specifically the Sea of Japan and the abyssal plain adjacent to the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. Deep-sea benthic structure of both areas is analyzed at higher taxonomic level and in greater detail exemplarily for isopods at species and population level. The main focus herein lies on the diversity recorded for each of the areas and the comparison between both.

Book Ecosystems of the Deep Oceans

Download or read book Ecosystems of the Deep Oceans written by P.A. Tyler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the deep sea ecosystem from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapters examine the deep-sea floor, the deep pelagic environment and the more specialised chemosynthetic environments of hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. These environments are examined from the perspective of the relationship of deep-sea animals to their physico-chemical environment. Later chapters examine the biogeography of the main deep oceans (Atlantic, Pacific and Indian) with particular attention to the downward flux of surface-derived organic matter and how this drives the processes within the deep-sea ecosystem. The peripheral deep seas including the polar seas and the marginal deep seas (inter alia the Mediterranean, Red, Caribbean and Okhotsk seas) are explored in the same context. The final chapters examine the processes occurring in the deep sea and include an analysis of why the deep sea has high species diversity, how the fauna respond to organic input and how species have adapted reproductive activity in the deep sea. The volume concludes with an analysis of the anthropogenic impact on the deep sea.

  • Author : Yoshiaki Kai
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2022-01-21
  • ISBN : 9811674272
  • Pages : 447 pages

Download or read book Fish Diversity of Japan written by Yoshiaki Kai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews and summarizes the studies on the fish diversity of Japan. It covers the present knowledge of ichthyofauna, habitat distribution, phylogeography, ecology, morphology, and conservation, as well as the history of ichthyology and fish collections in Japan. The book comprises five parts: I. Fish Diversity and Ichthyology of Japan, II. Habitat Distribution and Species Diversity, III. Diversity within Species: Phylogeographic Perspective on Japanese Fishes, IV. Morphological and Ecological Diversifications, and V. Conservation of Fish Diversity in Japan. The Japanese Archipelago is surrounded by two major warm and one cold currents. It is located in the western North Pacific and encompasses several climatic regimes from north to south. Although the land area of Japan is small, the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Japan ranks as the sixth largest in the world, including several marginal seas (Sea of Okhotsk, Sea of Japan, and East China Sea), and deep trenches (Izu-Ogasawara, Japan, and Kurile Trenches). Owing to a variety of marine habitats and a complex geological history, Japan has a rich fish species diversity, representing over 4,500 species in 370 families. The richness of fish species diversity has attracted many scientists since the late 1700s, and continuous studies have led to the development of ichthyology in Japan. With chapters written by leading experts in the field, the book will provide a stimulating and reliable resource for future research and contribute to the progress of ichthyology of the world.

Book Oceanography of the East Sea Japan Sea

Download or read book Oceanography of the East Sea Japan Sea written by Kyung-Il Chang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the research in various fields of oceanography on the responses of the East Japan Sea to climate change. The uniqueness of the East Japan Sea comes from the rapid and amplified response to climate change, which includes long-terms trends of physical and chemical parameters at a rate that almost doubles or even higher the global rate. This book aims to provide in an organized way the results from the previously published knowledge but also to introduce an updated view of the research recently carried out. The book is divided into several parts that comprise the physical, chemical, biological, and geological aspects of the region and fisheries. This book is made for researchers and students working on climate variability as well as for the oceanography community working on world’s marginal seas. The research presented in this work will also benefit to researchers from other fields such as social scientists and environmentalists, and also policy makers.

Download or read book Deep Sea Biology written by John D. Gage and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-04-18 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume provides a comprehensive account of the natural history of the organisms associated with the deep-sea floor and examines their relationship with this inhospitable environment--perhaps the most remote and least accessible location on the planet. The authors begin by describing the physical and chemical nature of the deep-sea floor and the methods used to collect and study its fauna. Then they discuss the ecology of the deep sea by exploring spatial patterns, diversity, biomass, vertical zonation, and large-scale distribution of organisms. Subsequent chapters review current knowledge of feeding, respiration, reproduction, and growth processes in these communities. The unique fauna of hypothermal vents and seeps are considered separately. Finally, there is a pertinent discussion of human exploitation of deep-sea resources and potential use of this environment for waste disposal.

Book THE DEEP WATER PLANKTON OF THE SEA OF JAPAN O Planktone Glubinnykh Vod Yaponskogo Morya

Download or read book THE DEEP WATER PLANKTON OF THE SEA OF JAPAN O Planktone Glubinnykh Vod Yaponskogo Morya written by M. E. Vinogradov and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep waters of the Sea of Japan are inhabited by cold water eurybathic species. True abyssal species are lacking there. Despite the fact that interzonal species occur in the Sea of Japan, and in large numbers, the plankton biomass of deep layers in this sea is very small owing to the lack of true deep sea animals. A large number of deep sea species of the ocean raises up to low depths during either ontogenetical movement or diurnal migrations, so that the shallowness of the strait cannot hinder the penetration of these species into the Sea of Japan. The introduction of these species into the Sea of Japan is obstructed mainly by the cold winter surface waters which differ in their structure from the warmer deep waters of the adjacent seas. The basin of the Sea of Japan being of an ancient origin, was connected with the depths of the ocean. The absence of true deep-sea animals in the Sea of Japan may depend on contemporary aberrant physical and chemical properties of its deep waters. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beasts of the Deep: Sea Creatures and Popular Culture offers its readers an in-depth and interdisciplinary engagement with the sea and its monstrous inhabitants; through critical readings of folklore, weird fiction, film, music, radio and digital games. Within the text there are a multitude of convergent critical perspectives used to engage and explore fictional and real monsters of the sea in media and folklore. The collection features chapters from a variety of academic perspectives; post- modernism, psychoanalysis, industrial-organisational analysis, fandom studies, sociology and philosophy are featured. Under examination are a wide range of narratives and media forms that represent, reimagine and create the Kraken, mermaids, giant sharks, sea draugrs and even the weird creatures of H.P. Lovecraft. Beasts of the Deep offers an expansive study of our sea-born fears and anxieties, that are crystallised in a variety of monstrous forms. Repeatedly the chapters in the collection encounter the contemporary relevance of our fears of the sea and its inhabitants – through the dehumanising media depictions of refugees in the Mediterranean to the encroaching ecological disasters of global warming, pollution and the threat of mass marine extinction.
