Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this thesis has been to examine Hispano-Islamic textiles which contain a figurative iconography. After having compared the iconography of twelve works with the secular and sacred traditions of both Christian and Islamic cultures, the following conclusions were reached. Both cultures shared common roots in classical and oriental culture and a rich spiritual life was shaped by Hispano-Islamic and Hispano-Christian peoples during the Middle Ages. Furthermore, it was concluded that the textiles, found in Christian tombs or sacred places, represent a "meta-language" by which Islamic and Christian peoples could communicate their compatible religious inclinations. Indeed, the persistence of a cosmological program of representation insinuates the existence of a substratum of values and institutions beneath dynastic and institutional distinctions. As a consequence, the evidence in these twelve textiles of a cultural substratum common to both cultures points to a compatibility of experience that was immune to the parochial distinctions of which both Christian and Islamic peoples proved susceptible in other environments. Finally, from this examination, it was inferred that the panHispanic cultural milieu was sufficiently resourceful to assimilate discordant interventions without relinquishing its fundamental autonomy or its cosmopolitanism.

Book excerpt: Islamic artists channelled their energies not into easel painting and large-scale sculpture, but rather into what Western scholars, obeying a very different hierarchy of art forms, rather disparagingly term the decorative arts or even the minor arts. In point of fact, some of the greatest masterpieces of Islamic art are in the media of ceramics, metalwork, textiles, ivory and glass. Often the images they bear express a complex set of meanings, for Islam inherited much material from the iconographic systems of earlier civilizations, notably those of the ancient Near East and of the classical world. Islam also developed its own distinctive vocabulary of signs and symbols. Accordingly, questions of iconography and meaning bulk large among the studies gathered together in the present volume. These studies, written over a period of almost thirty years, and taken from a wide variety of published sources, deal with aspects of the decorative arts from Spain to India and from the 7th to the 17th century. They focus in turn upon ceramics and metalwork; on coins, carpets and calligraphy; and on carving in wood and ivory. They are arranged under three headings. The first comprises general surveys of the field covering the content of these arts and confronting the challenges they present, such as the Islamic approach to three-dimensional sculpture. The second deals with questions of iconography and meaning, while the third comprises a series of studies devoted to specific media such as ivory, woodwork and numismatics. This volume therefore offers not only a general introduction to some of the problems posed by Islamic art, but also readings of key objects in an attempt to explore their meaning; and finally, an in-depth focus on individual objects representing specific genres and media.

The Centre, set up in 2006 with a £5 million grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Economic and Social Sciences Research Council, comprises a consortium of the universities of Edinburgh, Manchester and Durham whose brief is to secure long-term improvements in the teaching of the Arabic language and of Middle Eastern studies in the United Kingdom. The conference, held in Edinburgh in August 2007 under the title 'Arab art, architecture and material culture', was organised by Margaret Graves, then a Ph.D. student of Islamic art history at the University of Edinburgh. The intention was to use the conference as a way of encouraging younger scholars of Islamic art history to present their ideas before an audience of their peers, and to highlight the variety of research currently being undertaken into Islamic art, principally in British universities - though a few speakers from abroad also contributed. Twelve of the participants provided final versions of the papers that they had delivered at the conference, and these have been expertly edited by Dr Margaret Graves in the present volume. These twelve papers fall quite naturally into categories defined by medium. Half of them deal with the so-called "minor", "decorative" or "applied" arts - the uncertain nomenclature betrays a long outdated but still persistent Eurocentric taxonomy from which Islamic art historians have still not entirely freed themselves, and which embodies a hierarchical distinction between architecture, painting and sculpture (a notional first division) and all other arts and crafts (a notional second division). This distinction simply does not work in the field of Islamic art, where such media as metalwork, textiles and ceramics effortlessly claim major status. These media re the subject matter of the first six papers in this collection, and it is entirely appropriate that they are so well represented here.
