Book Evaluation of a Decorative Concrete Sidewalk

Download or read book Evaluation of a Decorative Concrete Sidewalk written by Marcella Jo Lucas and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report evaluates the construction and performance of a decorative sidewalk that was part of a major realignment project placed in a historical district. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's construction contract had a special provision that required a non-standard cement concrete sidewalk with a slate color, stamped pattern, and synthetic fibers as secondary reinforcement. The Increte System was used to create the decorative sidewalk desired for this location. Construction took 18 working days to place 1,045.35 sq yd of stamped-fiber-colored sidewalk. An integral color was added to the mix design, and then the secondary color and pattern were added as part of the finishing of the fresh concrete. This location cost 62 dollars per sq yd making a total of 64,811.70 dollars for this item in the overall project. During construction, problems encountered were low air content in the mix design and potential damage to the sidewalk surface during cold weather curing. Adjustments were made to overcome these problems. Follow-up field views and crack surveys showed that the stamped-fiber-colored sidewalk is performing satisfactorily. For the Department to place a decorative sidewalk in another Borough or Township location a Standard Special Provision should be developed based on the Project Special Provision and the Final Report's Recommendations.
