Book excerpt: The second edition of Avian Immunology provides an up-to-date overview of the current knowledge of avian immunology. From the ontogeny of the avian immune system to practical application in vaccinology, the book encompasses all aspects of innate and adaptive immunity in chickens. In addition, chapters are devoted to the immunology of other commercially important species such as turkeys and ducks, and to ecoimmunology summarizing the knowledge of immune responses in free-living birds often in relation to reproductive success. The book contains a detailed description of the avian innate immune system, encompassing the mucosal, enteric, respiratory and reproductive systems. The diseases and disorders it covers include immunodepressive diseases and immune evasion, autoimmune diseases, and tumors of the immune system. Practical aspects of vaccination are examined as well. Extensive appendices summarize resources for scientists including cell lines, inbred chicken lines, cytokines, chemokines, and monoclonal antibodies. The world-wide importance of poultry protein for the human diet, as well as the threat of avian influenza pandemics like H5N1 and heavy reliance on vaccination to protect commercial flocks makes this book a vital resource. This book provides crucial information not only for poultry health professionals and avian biologists, but also for comparative and veterinary immunologists, graduate students and veterinary students with an interest in avian immunology. - With contributions from 33 of the foremost international experts in the field, this book provides the most up-to-date review of avian immunology so far - Contains a detailed description of the avian innate immune system reviewing constitutive barriers, chemical and cellular responses; it includes a comprehensive review of avian Toll-like receptors - Contains a wide-ranging review of the "ecoimmunology" of free-living avian species, as applied to studies of population dynamics, and reviews methods and resources available for carrying out such research

Book Epstein Barr Virus Protocols

Download or read book Epstein Barr Virus Protocols written by Joanna B. Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-03-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joanna Wilson and Gerhard May have assembled a collection of the key molecular biology protocols used in the analysis of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), along with a series of valuable immunology, cell biology, and transgenic mouse protocols. These readily reproducible techniques include methods for gene expression with mini-EBV plasmids, for expression analysis by FISH, for EBV detection and quantitation, and for cell proliferation and death assays. In addition, there are EBV-based vectors, an up-to-date map of EBV, a comprehensive table of available latent protein antisera, and assays from in vitro to cell to organ to organism levels. Timely and highly practical, Epstein-Barr Virus Protocols provides powerful tools for elucidating the life cycle of EBV and its host interactions, work that promises the emergence of major new treatments and cures for EBV associated diseases, including several forms of human cancer.

Book Developmental Biology Protocols

Download or read book Developmental Biology Protocols written by Rocky S. Tuan and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2000-01-17 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental biology is one of the most exciting and fast-growing fields today. In part, this is so because the subject matter deals with the innately fascinating biological events—changes in form, structure, and function of the org- ism. The other reason for much of the excitement in developmental biology is that the field has truly become the unifying melting pot of biology, and provides a framework that integrates anatomy, physiology, genetics, biochemistry, and cellular and mole- lar biology, as well as evolutionary biology. No longer is the study of embryonic development merely “embryology.” In fact, development biology has produced - portant paradigms for both basic and clinical biomedical sciences alike. Although modern developmental biology has its roots in “experimental emb- ology” and the even more classical “chemical embryology,” the recent explosive and remarkable advances in developmental biology are critically linked to the advent of the “cellular and molecular biology revolution.” The impressive arsenal of expe- mental and analytical tools derived from cell and molecular biology, which promise to continue to expand, together with the exponentially developing sophistication in fu- tional imaging and information technologies, guarantee that the study of the devel- ing embryo will contribute one of the most captivating areas of biological research in the next millennium.

Book Railways and Rural Life

Download or read book Railways and Rural Life written by Gary Boyd-Hope and published by Historic England. This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful photography book records the work of Alfred Newton, a commercial photographer who was based in Leicester in the late 19th century. Newton was commissioned to record the extension of the Great Central Railway - the last main line - between Nottingham and London in 1894 and 1906, and Sydney Newton, then still a teenager, travelled the route with his camera. Significantly, in addition to photographing the railway and its associated features, the young Sydney also recorded rural life in the villages along the course of the line. Railway interest, local history and social history intertwine to provide a unique picture of life in Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire around the turn of the 20th century. This lavishly illustrated book, printed in beautiful duotones throughout, draws on the extensive archive holdings of English Heritage and the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland and offers a unique picture of our railway heritage.

Book Chicken Egg Yolk Antibodies Production and Application

Download or read book Chicken Egg Yolk Antibodies Production and Application written by Rüdiger Schade and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-09-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyclonal antibodies, widely used in research and diagnostics, are conventionally isolated from the blood of immunised mammals. The fact that antibodies can also be detected in the yolk of eggs laid by immunised hens, led to the development of the yolk antibody technology as an alternative method less stressful to animals. Hens can be kept under nearly natural conditions and antibodies be isolated from the eggs. Further, the IgY-technology has the advantage that avian antibodies can be produced against several antigens which do not induce a immune response in mammals. Protocols on how to keep and immunise hens and on the extraction, isolation and use of antibodies from yolk are described in detail in this manual. For their work on yolk antibodies the authors received the FISEA (International Foundation for the Substitution of Animal Experimentation, Luxembourg) prize in 1997.
