Book excerpt: The story is based partially in the island of Jamaica and in America. It traces the life of a family from the 1970s into the future and explores the relationship between individual behaviour, greed, selfishness, societal violence, organized crime, tribalism, gang and urban warfare, science and genetics as a consequence of the impact of the global village and ambitions of geo-politics and world domination. It explores how the thirst and thrust for world domination impacts on the lives and relationship of the family, and their neighbours, and how these factors affects individuals actions which in turn affect the collective consciousness of a nation and lead to murder, mayhem, and social degradation. It explores the reactive and dangerous steps taken by members of this family in order to survive. Though informative and instructive, the book is a fast paced action pack story with lots of unexpected turns and developments as it builds up the reader with adrenaline paced narrative. You never quite know what is coming next. The story, though fictionalized, is predicated and inspired by true events, the composite of lives of real persons and the extrapolation of cause, effects, conscience, and consequences. It examines how the attitude and actions of individuals on each other can affect these individual and impacts on the wider society and the world far into the future with multiplying effects. It also looks at the role that science, religion, nuclear proliferation, and politics will play in the future world. Some of the names, locations, persons, and situations were changed, altered, and fictionalized in order to conceal the identity of some of the persons and characters, places, and to also add dramatic effect and to magnify and illustrate pertinent points and ideas.

Book The Predatory Society

Download or read book The Predatory Society written by Paul Blumberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who knows more about a business's shady practices than the people who work there? In this pioneering study, Paul Blumberg examines a wide variety of evidence, including over 600 accounts written by workers who disclose in elaborate detail the deceptions their employers practiced on the public. Employed in a wide variety of business enterprises--supermarkets, restaurants, fish markets, department stores, gas stations, drug stores, pet stores, and many more--these workers pull back the curtain and reveal the hidden recesses of the American marketplace. Blumberg documents these deceptions in numerous vivid stories, providing readers with a trenchant handbook on survival in America. He tells of stores that routinely mark prices up before a sale; gas stations that sell regular gas as high test; auto mechanics who spray-paint customers' old car parts and then charge them for new parts (in one gas stations, the workers claimed that the mechanic's best tool was his paint can); and pharmacists who sell generic drugs and charge name-brand prices. But equally important, he provides an insightful analysis of why deception pervades the American marketplace. Though at times amusing, The Predatory Society is also frequently disturbing for what it says about private capitalism: how dishonesty is all but built into the American marketplace, and how this dishonesty has potentially disastrous effects on trust and community in our society.

Book Epitomic Writing in Late Antiquity and Beyond

Download or read book Epitomic Writing in Late Antiquity and Beyond written by Paolo Felice Sacchi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes a powerful argument for epitome (combining textual dismemberment and re-composition) as a broad hermeneutic field encompassing multifarious historical, conceptual and aesthetical concerns. The contributors gather from across the globe to present case studies of the 'summing up' of cultural artefacts, literary and artistic, in epitomic writing, and as a collective they demonstrate the importance of this genre that has been largely overlooked by scholars. The volume is divided into five sections: the first showcases the broad range of fields from which epitomic analysis can be made, from classics to postmodernism to cultural memory studies; the second focuses in on epitome as dismemberment in writing from late antiquity to the modern day; the third considers a 'productive negativity' of epitomic writings and how they are useful tools for investigating the very borders and paradoxes of language; the fourth brings this to bear on materiality; the fifth considers re-composition as a counterpart to dismemberment and problematises it. Across the volume, examples are taken from important late antique writers such as Ausonius, Clement of Alexandria, Macrobius, Nepos, Nonius Marcellus and Symphosius, and from modern authors such as Antonin Artaud, Barthes, Nabokov and Pascal Quignard. Epitomic writings about art from decorated tabulae to sarcophagi are also included, as are epitomic images themselves in the form of manuscript illustrations that sum up their text.

Book The Rape of Eve

    Book Details:
  • Author : Celene Lillie
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2017-01-01
  • ISBN : 1506414370
  • Pages : 363 pages

Download or read book The Rape of Eve written by Celene Lillie and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex, violence, power, and redemption. In recent decades, scholars of New Testament and early Christian traditions have given new attention to the relationships between gender and imperial power in the Roman world. In this surprising work, Celene Lillie examines core passages from three Gnostic texts from Nag Hammadi, On the Origin of the World, The Reality of the Rulers, and the Secret Revelation of John, in which Eve is portrayed as having been humiliated by the cosmic powers, yet experiencing restoration. Lillie compares that pattern with Gnostic savior motifs concerning Jesus and Seth, then sets it in the broader context of Roman cosmogonic myths at play in imperial ideology. The Nag Hammadi texts, she argues, offer us a window into symbolic forms of Christian resistance to imperial ideology. This groundbreaking study highlights the importance of the Nag Hammadi writings for our fuller appreciation of the currents of Christian response to the Roman Empire and the culture of rape pervasive within it.
