Book Decentralized Channel Management in Scalable Multihop Spread Spectrum Packet Radio Networks

Download or read book Decentralized Channel Management in Scalable Multihop Spread Spectrum Packet Radio Networks written by Timothy Jason Shepard and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This thesis addresses the problems of managing the transmissions of stations in a spread-spectrum packet radio network so that the system can remain effective when scaled to millions of nodes concentrated in a metropolitan area. The principal difficulty in scaling a system of packet radio stations is interference from other stations in the system. Interference comes both from nearby stations and from distant stations. Each nearby interfering station is a particular problem, because a signal received from it may be as strong as or stronger than the desired signal from some other station. Far-off interfering stations are not individually a problem, since each of their signals will be weaker, but the combined effect may be the dominant source of interference. The thesis begins with an analysis of propagation and interference models. The overall noise level in the system (mainly caused by the many distant stations) is then analyzed, and found to remain manageable even as the system scales to billions of nodes. A scheme for designing a scalable packet radio network is then presented. Included is a method of scheduling packet transmissions to avoid collisions (caused by interference from nearby stations) without the need for global coordination or synchronization. Simulations of a system of one thousand stations are used to verify and illustrate the methods used. A method of choosing routes (minimum-energy routes) is demonstrated in simulation to produce a fully connected and functional network for one hundred and one thousand randomly placed stations. Unfortunately, congestion as the system scales is unavoidable if the traffic is not limited to some degree of locality. If traffic is limited to a few hops, then for a large system the techniques presented in this thesis are superior to ideal time division multiplexing of a clear channel."

Download or read book The Future of Ideas written by Lawrence Lessig and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2002-11-12 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet revolution has come. Some say it has gone. In The Future of Ideas, Lawrence Lessig explains how the revolution has produced a counterrevolution of potentially devastating power and effect. Creativity once flourished because the Net protected a commons on which widest range of innovators could experiment. But now, manipulating the law for their own purposes, corporations have established themselves as virtual gatekeepers of the Net while Congress, in the pockets of media magnates, has rewritten copyright and patent laws to stifle creativity and progress. Lessig weaves the history of technology and its relevant laws to make a lucid and accessible case to protect the sanctity of intellectual freedom. He shows how the door to a future of ideas is being shut just as technology is creating extraordinary possibilities that have implications for all of us. Vital, eloquent, judicious and forthright, The Future of Ideas is a call to arms that we can ill afford to ignore.

Book Smart Mobs

Download or read book Smart Mobs written by Howard Rheingold and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2007-03-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Tokyo to Helsinki, Manhattan to Manila, Howard Rheingold takes us on a journey around the world for a preview of the next techno-cultural shift-a shift he predicts will be as dramatic as the widespread adoption of the PC in the 1980s and the Internet in the 1990s. The coming wave, says Rheingold, is the result of super-efficient mobile communications-cellular phones, personal digital assistants, and wireless-paging and Internet-access devices that will allow us to connect with anyone, anywhere, anytime. From the amusing ("Lovegetty" devices in Japan that light up when a person with the right date-potential characteristics appears in the vicinity) to the extraordinary (the overthrow of a repressive regime in the Philippines by political activists who mobilized by forwarding text messages via cell phones), Rheingold gives examples of the fundamentally new ways in which people are already engaging in group or collective action. He also considers the dark side of this phenomenon, such as the coordination of terrorist cells, threats to privacy, and the ability to incite violent behavior. Applying insights from sociology, artificial intelligence, engineering, and anthropology, Rheingold offers a penetrating perspective on the brave new convergence of pop culture, cutting-edge technology, and social activism. At the same time, he reminds us that, as with other technological revolutions, the real impact of mobile communications will come not from the technology itself but from how people use it, resist it, adapt to it, and ultimately use it to transform themselves, their communities, and their institutions.

Book Rethinking Rights and Regulations

Download or read book Rethinking Rights and Regulations written by Lorrie Faith Cranor and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributors to this volume explore the dynamics of new communications technologies and public policy; from TPRC 2002. The contributors to this volume examine issues raised by the intersection of new communications technologies and public policy in this post-boom, post-bust era. Originally presented at the 30th Research Conference on Communication, Information, and Internet Policy (TPRC 2002)—traditionally a showcase for the best academic research on this topic—their work combines hard data and deep analysis to explore the dynamic interplay between technological development and society. The chapters in the first section consider the ways society conceptualizes new information technologies and their implications for law and policy, examining the common metaphor of "cyberspace as place," alternative definitions of the Internet, the concept of a namespace, and measures of diffusion. The chapters in the second section discuss how technological change may force the rethinking of legal rights; topics considered include spectrum rights, intellectual property, copyright and "paracopyright," and the abridgement of constitutional rights by commercial rights in ISP rules. Chapters in the third and final section examine the constant adjustment and reinterpretation of regulations in response to technological change, considering, among other subjects, liability regimes for common carriers and the 1996 detariffing rule, privacy and enhanced 911, and the residual effect of state ownership on privatized telecommunication carriers. The policy implications of Rethinking Rights and Regulations are clear: major institutional changes may be the necessary response to major advances in telecommunications technology.
