Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly disseminated worldwide, with clinical manifestations ranging from mild respiratory symptoms to severe pneumonia and a fatality rate estimated around 2%. Person to person transmission is occurring both in the community and healthcare settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently declared the COVID-19 epidemic a public health emergency of international concern. The ongoing outbreak presents many clinical and public health management challenges due to limited understanding of viral pathogenesis, risk factors for infection, natural history of disease including clinical presentation and outcomes, prognostic factors for severe illness, period of infectivity, modes and extent of virus inter-human transmission, as well as effective preventive measures and public health response and containment interventions. There are no antiviral treatment nor vaccine available but fast track research and development efforts including clinical therapeutic trials are ongoing across the world. Managing this serious epidemic requires the appropriate deployment of limited human resources across all cadres of health care and public health staff, including clinical, laboratory, managerial and epidemiological data analysis and risk assessment experts. It presents challenges around public communication and messaging around risk, with the potential for misinformation and disinformation. Therefore, integrated operational research and intervention, learning from experiences across different fields and settings should contribute towards better understanding and managing COVID-19. This Research Topic aims to highlight interdisciplinary research approaches deployed during the COVID-19 epidemic, addressing knowledge gaps and generating evidence for its improved management and control. It will incorporate critical, theoretically informed and empirically grounded original research contributions using diverse approaches, experimental, observational and intervention studies, conceptual framing, expert opinions and reviews from across the world. The Research Topic proposes a multi-dimensional approach to improving the management of COVID-19 with scientific contributions from all areas of virology, immunology, clinical microbiology, epidemiology, therapeutics, communications as well as infection prevention and public health risk assessment and management studies.

This book represents a snapshot of critical responses by researchers from 10 countries and 4 continents, in a collective effort to explore how Cultural Studies can contribute to our struggle to persevere in a "no normal" horizon, with no clear end in sight. Together, the essays address important questions at the intersection of culture, power, politics, and public health: What are the possible outlines for the panic-pandemic complex? How has the pandemic been endowed with meanings and affective registers, often at the tipping points where existing social relations and medical understanding were being rapidly displaced by new ones? How can societies discover ways of living with, through, and against COVID that do not simply reproduce existing hierarchies and power relations? The 30 essays comprising this collection, along with the editors’ introduction, explore the formative period of the COVID pandemic, from mid-2020 to mid-2021. They are grouped into three sections – ‘Racializations,’ ‘Media, Data, and Fragments of the Popular,’ and ‘Un/knowing the Pandemic’ – themes that animate, but do not exhaust, the complex cultural and political life of COVID-19 with respect to identity, technology, and epistemology. With unstable financial markets, a global economy on fire, and speculations over the efficacy of vaccines, it is important to understand our current circumstances in order to present reasonable solutions. However dim the future may appear, creating a brighter reality must be a collective goal. Through this book, I hope to provide a clear picture of what the world looked like during the peak of the pandemic as well as a picture of what a post-pandemic world may look like.

The objective of the Research Topic is to bring together spatio-temporal biological, ecological, environmental and social aspects of Coronavirus to better understand its dynamics, shifts, systemic impacts on health and socio-economic effects. Studies via models that link Coronavirus to other viruses are welcome, in order to properly characterize the biology, ecology and environmental niche or universality of Coronavirus dynamics. We also seek prospective studies that investigate potential future spillovers of Coronavirus-like viruses by indicating risk hotspots in relation to socio-environmental determinants. Other issues focused on public health and medical aspects are welcome; however, these studies need to explicitly address the virus’ connection with the environment in order to gain insight into its ecology and evolution. Studies addressing data and modeling challenges as well as different model approaches (from machine learning to phenomenological and process-based models) have a lot of interest. Lastly, we highly encourage studies that quantitatively explore the coupled evolution of population perceptions and the associated infodemic (for instance, inferred from social media), behavior and systemic health outcomes.

The links between epidemics and social issues—such as inequality, discrimination, and financial insecurity—are not always direct or clear.
