Book Yields of Eastern White Pine in New England Related to Age Site and Stocking

Download or read book Yields of Eastern White Pine in New England Related to Age Site and Stocking written by William B. Leak and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2The Universities of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, in cooperation with the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, initiated in 1959-60 a study of the effects of site and stocking on the growth of eastern white pine. The primary purposes of the study were to develop equations for: (1) predicting the volume increment per acre of pure, even-aged, white pine stands from observable characteristics of the stand, soil, and topography; and (2) predicting the increment of individual white pine trees related to characteristics of the tree, stand, and site. By 1965, measurements of stand growth and development for a 3-year period were available from nearly all field plots. A preliminary analysis revealed that one or more additional remeasurements should be taken before a final summary of the periodic growth of trees and stands is made. Nevertheless, useful and accurate relationships were developed between stand yield, or volumes per acre, and stand age, site, and stocking; and this information is presented in this paper. Yield tables based on the plot data from New Hampshire, using stand height in place of age and site index, have been published by Barrett and Allen (1966).S3.

Book Biological Transformation of Wood by Microorganisms

Download or read book Biological Transformation of Wood by Microorganisms written by W. Liese and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the papers presented at the Session on Wood Products Pathology during the 2nd International Congress on Plant Pathology on 10th - 12th September 1973 in Minneapolis/USA. The topics were dealt with under four heads, viz. Interaction of Microorganisms during Wood Decay, Bacterial Degradation of Wood, Decay of Resistant Wood and Enzymatic Mechanisms of Deterioration Process, followed by a Discussion Session on Extension: an obli gation of all Wood Products Pathologists •. Thanks to the cooperation of the authors all the papers could be compiled in this volume. The conference gave an unique possibility to discuss in depth the principles of wood decay by microorganisms from the various angles. The chapters give detailed information on the current progress and problems in wood products pathology. They are therefore collected together in this volume so that people interested in this field will have immediate access to the material and ideas presented. The topic of this Session, the degradation of wood by fungi and bacteria, has become more and more important during the last years. Wood is the only renewable natural resource and raw material of man so that it must be preserved against unwanted deterioration. On the other hand, its natural decomposition does not lead to any harmful products but only to carbondioxide and water. Both aspects have been dealt with in this volume. Book Ecology and Management of Central Hardwood Forests

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to effective hardwood forest management Extending 235,000 square miles from New York to Georgia and fromVirginia to Missouri, the Central Hardwoods Region harbors the mostextensive concentration of deciduous hardwoods in the world. Asharvests in the Pacific Northwest decline and timber prices rise, the maturing stands of mixed species in this central U.S. regionare a rich and valuable resource that is increasingly vulnerable toexploitation. This timely book examines all of the key ecological, social, and economic management considerations essential to utilizeand sustain these vital woodlands effectively. First, it develops the background necessary to understand whatmakes the hardwood eco-system function, with a thorough examinationof the physiography, geology, soils, and climate of the region anda historical overview of its evolution and development frompre-European settlement to the present. Then, species by species, the book details the silvical characteristics of 34 important treespecies. Next, it offers expert recommendations for effectiveforest treatment and management, from specific concerns such astimber production, pollution, and financial planning to broaderissues, including the role of the natural resource manager and thebiological potential of the entire region. Generously supplemented with graphs and photos, Ecology andManagement of Central Hardwood Forests is important reading forforesters, natural resource managers, regional planners, environmental scientists, governmental officials--everyone with astake in the future of this critical living resource.
