Book Death Taxes and Sports Whimsy

Download or read book Death Taxes and Sports Whimsy written by William Russo and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-12-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether sports shall turn out to be heroic in our lives, or whether that station will be held by any other endeavor, these pages must show. To begin our sports fanaticism with the beginning of 2012, we record that we can hardly wait for the fetid events of 2011 to fade away. At twelve o'clock on January 1st, we may remark that a new clock will start on the Sports Circus Maximus. In consideration of the near pleasantries we have catalogued in this volume, we may cry over spilled milk, or we could notice the smell coming from the fireplace indicates a rally squirrel fell down the chimney after Santa Claus departed. None of these is as pungent as the aroma that remains from the ending of 2011. A few unlucky fans in Boston sports still smell the stench of fried chicken and spilled beer. Sports fans are generally destined to be unlucky in life. One's favorite team rarely wins the championship. And second, we have been privileged and cursed to see the hobgoblins and ghosts attached to the venal and vain athletes in all sports. Our sports fanaticism is instructive at worst. We are taught by drop-outs of high culture. This year provided more rot and garbage than usual, ranging from lockouts in two major sports, sex abuse scandals at two major universities, and endless examples of venal sin from major athletes, including an NFL player doubling as a drug kingpin in Chicago, and the Antichrist seemed to be everywhere on the playing field. We have been reduced to the pathetic cry of, "Wait till next year!" No one could have predicted how eventful the year has been. Our values may have been verified by the result, but our sports heroes have been falsified by history. We have been exposed to exposing athletes, more than can be found after an oil spill or last call at the saloon. Monta Ellis, Michael Vick, and Shaun White have taken 'l' out with their pubic hairs. As we wait for the New Year and the clock to strike twelve, providing us with new hope, we may also wonder if a Houston Asteroid could be in our American League future.

Book Rebellion Rascals and Revenue

Download or read book Rebellion Rascals and Revenue written by Michael Keen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging and enlightening account of taxation told through lively, dramatic, and sometimes ludicrous stories drawn from around the world and across the ages Governments have always struggled to tax in ways that are effective and tolerably fair. Sometimes they fail grotesquely, as when, in 1898, the British ignited a rebellion in Sierra Leone by imposing a tax on huts—and, in repressing it, ended up burning the very huts they intended to tax. Sometimes they succeed astonishingly, as when, in eighteenth-century Britain, a cut in the tax on tea massively increased revenue. In this entertaining book, two leading authorities on taxation, Michael Keen and Joel Slemrod, provide a fascinating and informative tour through these and many other episodes in tax history, both preposterous and dramatic—from the plundering described by Herodotus and an Incan tax payable in lice to the (misremembered) Boston Tea Party and the scandals of the Panama Papers. Along the way, readers meet a colorful cast of tax rascals, and even a few tax heroes. While it is hard to fathom the inspiration behind such taxes as one on ships that tended to make them sink, Keen and Slemrod show that yesterday’s tax systems have more in common with ours than we may think. Georgian England’s window tax now seems quaint, but was an ingenious way of judging wealth unobtrusively. And Tsar Peter the Great’s tax on beards aimed to induce the nobility to shave, much like today’s carbon taxes aim to slow global warming. Rebellion, Rascals, and Revenue is a surprising and one-of-a-kind account of how history illuminates the perennial challenges and timeless principles of taxation—and how the past holds clues to solving the tax problems of today.

Book Checkpoint Zipolite

Download or read book Checkpoint Zipolite written by Belén Fernández and published by OR Books. This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When I first committed to three full months in El Salvador, the feeling that I was signing up for the equivalent of marriage and reproduction was assuaged only by the awareness that, come March 2020, I'd be dashing around Mexico before flying to Istanbul and resuming freneticism in that hemisphere. Little did I know that the scribbled itinerary would never come to fruition, and that I'd only get as far as the coastal village of Zipolite in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, where March 13-25 would turn into March 13 until further notice." Since leaving her American homeland in 2003 Belén Fernández had been an inveterate traveler. Ceaselessly wandering the world, the only constant in her itinerary was a conviction never to return to the country of her childhood. Then the COVID-19 lockdown happened and Fernandez found herself stranded in a small village on the Pacific coast of Mexico. This charming, wryly humorous account of nine months stuck in one place nevertheless roams freely: over reflections on previous excursions to the wilder regions of North Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe; over her new-found friendship with Javier, the mezcal-drinking, chain-smoking near-septuagenarian she encounters in his plastic chair on Mexico's only clothing-optional beach; over her protracted struggle to obtain a life-saving supply of yerba mate; and over, literally, the rope of a COVID-19 checkpoint, set up directly outside her front door and manned by armed guards who require her to don a mask every time she returns home.

Book excerpt: The legendary Encyclopedia of Medicine is a dizzying collection of maladies: an amnesia that causes everyone you've ever met to forget you exist, while you remain perfectly, painfully aware of your history. A wound that grows with each dark thought or evil deed you commit but shrinks with every act of kindness. A disease that causes your body to imitate death, stopping your heart, cooling your blood. Will the fit pass before they bury you--or after? The Afflictions is a magical compendium of pseudo-diseases, an encyclopedia of archaic medicine written by a contemporary physician and scientist. Little by little, these bizarre and mystical afflictions frame an eternal struggle: between human desire and the limits of bodily existence. First published in English in the United States, The Afflictions has since been published in Argentina, Italy, and India. This second U.S. edition features the original illustrations created by Pia Valentinis for the Italian language edition.
