Book Keepers of the Sacred Chants

Download or read book Keepers of the Sacred Chants written by Jonathan D. Hill and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wakuenai of the upper Rio Negro region in southern Venezuela employ a form of singing called malikai for ceremonies of childbirth, initiation, and healing. This ritual chanting is a rich amalgam of myth and music, and serves as a means of integrating individuals into a vertical hierarchy of power relations between mythic ancestors and human descendants. Jonathan Hill here shows how the musical and semantic transformations of everyday discourse in malikai integrate the everyday world into a poetic process of empowerment.

Book Ancient Legends Mystic Charms and Superstitions of Ireland

Download or read book Ancient Legends Mystic Charms and Superstitions of Ireland written by Francesca Wilde and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the Irish legends, superstitions, and ancient charms now collected were obtained chiefly from oral communications made by the peasantry themselves, either in Irish or in the Irish-English which preserves so much of the expressive idiom of the antique tongue. These narrations were taken down by competent persons skilled in both languages, and as far as possible in the very words of the narrator; so that much of the primitive simplicity of the style has been retained, while the legends have a peculiar and special value as coming direct from the national heart.

Book My Army Life and the Fort Phil Kearney Massacre

Download or read book My Army Life and the Fort Phil Kearney Massacre written by Frances Courtney Carrington and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1910, Frances C. Carrington's My Army Life and the Fort Phil Kearney Massacre recounted the author's adventures as an army wife on the Great Plains, but also sought to set the record straight on her second husband's involvement in the Fetterman fight. Frances traveled with her first husband, Lt. George Washington Grummond, to Fort Phil Kearney in Wyoming in 1866 where he was killed in the Fetterman incident just a few months later. She eventually married the post commander, Col. Henry B. Carrington, after the death of his first wife, Margaret, who had befriended and cared for Frances during her brief, tragic episode at the frontier post. Frances's narrative recalls the wonder and worries of a naive young bride during the fateful days of 1866. From her voyage to Wyoming to her encounters with unfamiliar peoples and strange landscapes, Frances's vivid prose examines not only the everyday workings of a frontier army post but also the political and social intrigue behind one of the most controversial military defeats in Western history.

Book The Cultural Context of Therapeutic Choice

Download or read book The Cultural Context of Therapeutic Choice written by C. Sargent and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1982-03-31 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the factors influencing women's choices of obstetrical care in a Bariba community in the People's Republic of Benin, West Africa. When selecting a research topic, I decided to investigate health care among the Bariba for several reasons. First, I had served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in northern Benin (then Dahomey) and had established a network of contacts in the region. In addition, I had worked for a year as assistant manager of a pharmacy in a northern town and had become interested in the pattern of utilization of health care services by urban residents. This three-year residence proved an invaluable asset in preparing and conducting research in the northern region. In particular, I was able to establish relationships with several indigenous midwives whose families I already knew both from prior research experience and mutual friend ships. These relationships enabled me to obtain detailed information regarding obstetrical practice and thus form the foundation of this book. The fieldwork upon which the book is directly based was conducted between June 1976 and December 1977 and sponsored by the F ord-Rockefeller Popula tion Policy Program, the Social Science Research Council, the National Science Foundation, and the FUlbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Program. The Ford-Rockefeller Population Policy Program funded the project as a collab oration between myself and Professor Eusebe Alihonou, Professor Agrege (Gynecologie-Obstetrique) at the National University of Benin.
