Book The Wonderful World of Joseph McCrumble

Download or read book The Wonderful World of Joseph McCrumble written by Mark Booth and published by Mark Booth. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wonderful World of Joseph McCrumble' is a highly entertaining, but occasionally tragic, insight into the life and times of Dr Joseph McCrumble; an erstwhile yet quietly charismatic scientist-artist who is thrust into the world of celebrity after consulting on a doomed reality-TV programme. Writing in his on-line diary, Dr McCrumble sets out to simply enlighten the public to his valuable work on parasites of both animals and humans, undertaken at the now infamous Cumbernauld Institute of Parasitology (location undisclosed, but definitely nowhere near the Scottish new town of Cumbernauld). Unfortunately, events soon take a turn for the worse, and we begin a tumultuous adventure with more twists and turns than an amateur plumbing convention. On the lighter side, there's kleptomania, kidnapping, nocturnal clinches with naked strangers, unexpected pregnancy and imprisonment. All these escapades involve his family and colleagues, whose gamut of quirks and idiosyncrasies can only be described as 'colourful.' A more life-threatening aspect of the author's life is seen when his diary takes us on precarious journeys to the wildlife parks of East Africa, the blustery highlands of Scotland, and the dark, ominous jungles of Papua New Guinea - a place where Dr McCrumble has experiences that even Joseph Conrad (author: The Heart of Darkness) would balk at. Despite the plethora of tragicomic events that Dr McCrumble has to endure, he maintains his philanthropic ethos and insists that a large slab of the profits of this book, his self-declared magnum opus, be shared between the Matangini Project (a charitable venture supporting community projects in East Africa), and Children In Need. Note: This edition of the diary also contains a 70 page story called 'Five Days in Denver' - an entirely fictional and racy account of scientists behaving badly at a scientific conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When her husband is murdered using a method from one of her books, a screenwriter becomes the main suspect A successful writer and a B-movie director seem like the perfect match in the Hollywood Hills and, with him working to produce her novel for an upcoming film, the pair’s recent marriage isn’t the only way that they’re connected. When the husband is found murdered on the wife’s birthday using a method of poisoning that was described in one of her books, Victoria suddenly becomes the main suspect as her new happy life comes crashing down around her. The case appears straightforward from the outside but the LAPD investigator on the scene finds the truth to be anything but. Though all the signs point to Victoria, there’s no motive to be found. Now, to solve the mystery of whodunnit, he’ll have to dig beneath the veneer of the household and reveal its inner workings, and to understand the deadly drama that unfolded just beneath the surface. Reprinted for the first time in over half a century, The Birthday Murder is a beautifully written and psychologically astute Golden Age mystery set in old Los Angeles. Book Australian Submarines Vol 2

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael White
  • Publisher : Australian Teachers of Media
  • Release : 2015-11-01
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 1000 pages

Download or read book Australian Submarines Vol 2 written by Michael White and published by Australian Teachers of Media. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 1000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book commences with a discussion of the policy issues as to whether Australia needed submarines and then the decision to buy AE1 and AE2. It then goes through their coming to Australia, the tragic loss of AE1 in New Guinea on 14 September 1914 and the bravery and daring of the AE2 crew in penetrating the Dardanelles on Anzac Day in 1915. The history then goes on to deal with the J-Class submarines that came to Australia in 1919, the first Oxley and Otway (which went to the RN in the Depression in 1931), and the fact that in World War Two, Australia had no submarines except for the Dutch K IX whose career ended with a battery explosion in 1944. Then the period of the RN Fourth Submarine Squadron based in Sydney is dealt with, including some of the happy memories of those who served in it. The book sets out the story of the new RAN submarine arm from 1963. When Oxley (S 57) arrived in Neutral Bay, Sydney, in 1967, so began the new Australian era of submarines. The basic dates of the O Boats are outlined, along with the building and basic dates of the Collins class. The book deals with some of the issues about the intelligence patrols, about the Future Submarine and also records the numerous plaques, services, memorials and museums in Australia and overseas dedicated to Australian submarines and Australian and NZ submariners. There is a detailed chapter on special submarine craft such as the X-Craft in which some of the submarine heroes like Max Sheean, Henty Henty-Creer and Ken Briggs served, and in some cases died. The appendices to this book are numerous and detailed by a strong team from around the world, including Garry Mellon, Barrie Downer and Pat Heffernan. Numerous photographs have been collected and included in the book to fit in with the text from Darren Brown and others. The appendices also list all Australian submariners who have qualified and served up until mid-2014, including those who have died.
