Book excerpt: Dear The Man Upstairs is the captivating story of a young girl named Amber who begins writing to the "Man Upstairs," not realizing that the name is a euphemism for God. Someone writes her back and that person is not God. The series of letters that follow explore family dynamics, societal expectations, mental health, and the truth about growing up. Amber's unique experiences and gift for storytelling shows readers that there is more than one way to be a healthy, happy child; that families don't have to be perfect to stick together. Dear The Man Upstairs grapples with the tough issues surrounding parenting, behavioral health issues, and terminal illness through the mind of a creative genius. Author Maytal Booth brilliantly combines two genres, epistolary and realistic fiction, in a compelling story that focuses on theology in a way that is both subtle and thought-provoking. Using her experiences as an educator and child, this work of fiction helps to redefine what makes a happy and healthy child. If you enjoy heartwarming coming-of-age stories and innovative but realistic fiction, Dear The Man Upstairs is this season's must-read.

Wodehouse, first published in the U.K. on January 23, 1914. Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, was an English author and one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. Born in Guildford, the son of a British magistrate based in Hong Kong, Wodehouse spent happy teenage years at Dulwich College, to which he remained devoted all his life. After leaving school he was employed by a bank but disliked the work and turned to writing in his spare time. His early novels were mostly school stories, but he later switched to comic fiction, creating several regular characters who became familiar to the public over the years. They include the feather-brained Bertie Wooster and his sagacious valet, Jeeves; the immaculate and loquacious Psmith; the feeble-minded Lord Emsworth and the Blandings Castle set; the loquacious Oldest Member, with stories about golf; and the equally loquacious Mr Mulliner, with tall tales on subjects ranging from bibulous bishops to megalomaniac movie moguls. Although most of Wodehouse's fiction is set in England, he spent much of his life in the US and used New York and Hollywood as settings for some of his novels and short stories. During and after the First World War, together with Guy Bolton and Jerome Kern, he wrote a series of Broadway musical comedies that were an important part of the development of the American musical. He began the 1930s writing for MGM in Hollywood. In a 1931 interview, his naïve revelations of incompetence and extravagance at Hollywood studios caused a furore. In the same decade, his literary career reached a new peak.

Book excerpt: Based on the wildly popular Twitter feed Dear Girls Above Me, a roman à clef about how thinking like a couple of girls turned one single guy into a better man. When Charlie McDowell began sharing his open letters to his noisy upstairs neighbors—two impossibly ditzy female roommates in their mid-twenties—on Twitter, his feed quickly went viral. His followers multiplied and he got the attention of everyone from celebrities to production studios to major media outlets such as Time and Glamour. Now Dear Girls breaks out of the 140-character limit as Charlie imagines what would happen if he put the wisdom of the girls to the test. After being unceremoniously dumped by the girl he was certain was “the one,” Charlie realized his neighbors’ conversations were not only amusing, but also offered him access to a completely uncensored woman’s perspective on the world. From the importance of effectively Facebook-stalking potential girlfriends and effortlessly pulling off pastel, to learning when in the early stages of dating is too presumptuous to bring a condom and how to turn food poisoning into a dieting advantage, the girls get Charlie into trouble, but they also get him out of it—without ever having a clue of their impact on him.

Book excerpt: The MAN UPSTAIRS When professional thief Hugh MacPherson died on the job in 1784 during a botched break-in he thought it was the end, but it was just the beginning. He soon discovers that for his entire existence he has been followed by a Watcher named Mika. Mika sees to it that Hugh is left to spend an eternity in Torment, haunting the house he planned on robbing as punishment for his crimes. Over one hundred years pass in lonely isolation before twelve year old Emma Hollis and her family arrive. Emma can see and speak to souls in Torment. Her presence changes everything. As Emma grows up she and Hugh fall in love. They both know that there is little hope of a future together, that is until Mika issues Emma and Hugh a challenge that could give Hugh back the life that was cut short decades before. Mary Swift was born in Massachusetts and raised in a small town in coastal Maine where she still resides. She has been writing since the age of three, when she composed her first song. As a child she wrote stories for the amusement of her family and herself. For the past sixteen years she has been working in the banking industry while continuing to write in her free time. After her mother died unexpectedly she made a decision to pursue publishing her work. Growing up her family strongly encouraged creativity and the importance of imagination. The freedom to think, dream and believe anything is possible is directly reflected in Mary's work where the living and the dead can talk to one another and fantastic events are happening all around us. When she's not writing she enjoys art and travelling to new destinations.

Book excerpt: “Like Richard Russo’s Straight Man this book has a lot to say about the humanities in American colleges and universities…. Very funny and also moving.” —Tom Perrotta, New York Post A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: NPR and Boston Globe Finally a novel that puts the "pissed" back into "epistolary." Jason Fitger is a beleaguered professor of creative writing and literature at Payne University, a small and not very distinguished liberal arts college in the midwest. His department is facing draconian cuts and squalid quarters, while one floor above them the Economics Department is getting lavishly remodeled offices. His once-promising writing career is in the doldrums, as is his romantic life, in part as the result of his unwise use of his private affairs for his novels. His star (he thinks) student can't catch a break with his brilliant (he thinks) work Accountant in a Bordello, based on Melville's Bartleby. In short, his life is a tale of woe, and the vehicle this droll and inventive novel uses to tell that tale is a series of hilarious letters of recommendation that Fitger is endlessly called upon by his students and colleagues to produce, each one of which is a small masterpiece of high dudgeon, low spirits, and passive-aggressive strategies. We recommend Dear Committee Members to you in the strongest possible terms. Don’t miss Julie Schumacher's new novel, The English Experience, coming soon.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE© IN LITERATURE 2013 A New York Times Notable Book A Washington Post Notable Work of Fiction A Best Book of the Year: The Atlantic, NPR, San Francisco Chronicle, Vogue, AV Club In story after story in this brilliant new collection, Alice Munro pinpoints the moment a person is forever altered by a chance encounter, an action not taken, or a simple twist of fate. Her characters are flawed and fully human: a soldier returning from war and avoiding his fiancée, a wealthy woman deciding whether to confront a blackmailer, an adulterous mother and her neglected children, a guilt-ridden father, a young teacher jilted by her employer. Illumined by Munro’s unflinching insight, these lives draw us in with their quiet depth and surprise us with unexpected turns. And while most are set in her signature territory around Lake Huron, some strike even closer to home: an astonishing suite of four autobiographical tales offers an unprecedented glimpse into Munro’s own childhood. Exalted by her clarity of vision and her unparalleled gift for storytelling, Dear Life shows how strange, perilous, and extraordinary ordinary life can be.
