Book excerpt: …Well dear Jim it breaks my heart to write this letter. Our dear [brother] was killed yesterday morning at 5.30. The bullet killed him instantly and he never spoke a word. I had just left him and gone down the trench to see the other lads when I was called back. Oh Jim it is awful … Oh I do hope he is the last … It is April 27, 1918, Jim’s brother writes from the battlefields of France. Of five brothers serving on the Western Front, three have given their lives; another has been hospitalized. Six agonizing months of brutal warfare were yet to be endured … World War I was a senseless tragedy. Its long shadow darkened the four corners of the world. In Mologa, Victoria, once a bustling community, stands a lonely stone memorial. Etched within the granite are the names of the Marlow brothers and their mates; a testament to ordinary people who became heroes. Anzac Sons is composed from a collection of over 500 letters and postcards written by the brothers who served. From the training grounds of Victoria, Egypt and England, to the Western Front battlefields – Pozieres, Bullecourt, Messines, Menin Road, Passchendaele, Villers-Bretonneux and the battles of 1918 – this compelling true story was compiled by the granddaughter of a surviving brother. She takes us on her journey as she walks in the footsteps of her ancestors. This is a story of mateship, bravery and sacrifice; it is a heartbreaking account of a family torn apart by war. It is a pledge to never forget.

Book excerpt: Dace Lamoureux was the epitome of a male heir and for whom the term fortunate son was certainly appropriate. He was the late-life child of Senator Allard and Elizabeth Lamoureux and the last chance at the continuation of an unbroken dynasty spanning more than two centuries of American history for the rich and powerful political family. On February 14, 1998, Dace turned twenty-one and thus became a man in the eyes of his father and the world. When Dace’s longtime girlfriend and soon-to-be fiance, Sarah Avidago, is killed in an automobile accident later that night, he learns quickly what it means to shoulder the responsibilities of being a Lamoureux man. Dace rebels, and together with lifelong friend Dave Saunders, embarks upon a journey that quickly becomes an exploration of life which tests the limits of friendship. In a Catholic Girl’s High School outside of New Orleans, best friends Ashley Monreale and Veronica Broussard begin a similar journey. The time is ten days before Mardi Gras, the conclusion of the yearly Carnival celebration and this year, the girls have a plan to attend the party. New Orleans Private Detective William Langdon and his wife, Sandy, take some time away to celebrate an interesting twist in their lives; traveling to South Padre Island - the scene of the crime, as William refers to it - for several days of rest and relaxation when William is hired for a simple case and finds himself swept into the growing maelstrom. What none of them realize is they have all been irrevocably set upon a collision course which will change each of their lives forever when a young girl is found raped and beaten on the banks of the Mississippi River in the city of New Orleans on the morning after Mardi Gras. It’s a case which will take William a decade to fully resolve, and a lifetime to forget.

Book The Collected Letters of Henry Northrup Castle

Download or read book The Collected Letters of Henry Northrup Castle written by Henry Northrup Castle and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 901 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Herbert Mead, one of America’s most important and influential philosophers, a founder of pragmatism, social psychology, and symbolic interactionism, was also a keen observer of American culture and early modernism. In the period from the 1870s to 1895, Henry Northrup Castle maintained a correspondence with family members and with Mead—his best friend at Oberlin College and brother-in-law—that reveals many of the intellectual, economic, and cultural forces that shaped American thought in that complex era. Close friends of John Dewey, Jane Addams, and other leading Chicago Progressives, the author of these often intimate letters comments frankly on pivotal events affecting higher education, developments at Oberlin College, Hawaii (where the Castles lived), progressivism, and the general angst that many young intellectuals were experiencing in early modern America. The letters, drawn from the Mead-Castle collection at the University of Chicago, were collected and edited by Mead after the tragic death of Henry Castle in a shipping accident in the North Sea. Working with his wife Helen Castle (one of Henry’s sisters), he privately published fifty copies of the letters to record an important relationship and as an intellectual history of two progressive thinkers at the end of the nineteenth century. American historians, such as Robert Crunden and Gary Cook, have noted the importance of the letters to historians of the late nineteenth century. The letters are made available here using the basic Mead text of 1902. Additional insights into the connection between Mead, John Dewey, Henry and Harriet Castle, and Hawaii’s progressive kindergarten system are provided by the foundation’s executive director Alfred L. Castle. Marvin Krislov, president of Oberlin College, has added additional comments on the importance of the letters to understanding the intellectual relationship that flourished at Oberlin College. Published with the support of the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation.

Over the years, you willingly pour everything you have into your family, but in the process, you lose the essence of who you are. In her characteristic raw and visceral style, Rachel teaches you how to rewrite the pages of your story, follow your passion, and discover the beauty of who you are. Drawing on lessons from her own incredible journey--together with insight from conversations with thousands of other women--Rachel encourages moms to break cycles, take off masks, and prevent fear from taking control. She balances her "no excuses" approach with breathing room and grace for those messy moments in life and mothering. Rachel reminds you there is always a reason to hope, to move forward, and to dare the impossible. You can make changes. You can pursue dreams, find yourself, and live a life of deep happiness and boundless joy. Stop waiting for "someday." Take hold of the moment, and say yes to your dreams.

Book excerpt: Compiled by acclaimed British military history Andrew Roberts, this is a classic collection of war letters from the frontline revealing the common hopes and fears shared by soldiers across the passage of time. A legacy of an empire and a nation at war, Love Tommy, is a collection of letters housed at the Imperial War Museum sent by British and Commonwealth troops from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa from the front line of war to their loved ones at home. Poignant expressions of love, hope and fear sit alongside amusing anecdotes, grumbles about rations and thoughtful reflections, eloquently revealing how, despite the passage of time, many experiences of the fighting man are shared in countless wars and battles. From the muddy trenches of the Somme to frozen ground of the Falklands to the heat and dust of Iraq, these letters are the ordinary soldier's testament to life on the front line.
