As reticent and unemotional as his aunt is loquacious and brittle, the young man contends that he has undergone a mystical experience-a revelation which is as unsettling to his aunt as it is fulfilling to him. As though intimidated by his inscrutable reserve, she grows increasingly voluble, revealing in her wise-cracking chatter the defense which she has constructed to keep the world at bay-and to mask the innate sensitivity and idealism which persist despite the loneliness and futility of her existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school and the difficult terrain of sexuality and gender identity are brilliantly explored in this smart, incisive ethnography. Based on eighteen months of fieldwork in a racially diverse working-class high school, Dude, You're a Fag sheds new light on masculinity both as a field of meaning and as a set of social practices. C. J. Pascoe's unorthodox approach analyzes masculinity as not only a gendered process but also a sexual one. She demonstrates how the "specter of the fag" becomes a disciplinary mechanism for regulating heterosexual as well as homosexual boys and how the "fag discourse" is as much tied to gender as it is to sexuality.

Download or read book Curveball written by Eric Goodman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A star rookie pitcher is making a statement in his first major league season—but will the secret he’s been keeping derail everything he’s been working toward? “Eric Goodman’s Curveball dwells in its details in the most fascinating way—and it reaches far beyond its baseball setting to become a first-rate intergenerational drama as well as a delightful read.” —T.C. Boyle “Goodman does a fine job depicting the conflicts of a young player… In this knowing, compelling novel…” —George Vecsey, georgevecsey.com Jess Singer, pitching prodigy and son of the infamous Jewish Joe Singer—who starred on the mound for the same MLB team twenty-five years earlier—is blessed with a plus-plus curveball, possesses immense athletic abilities, and is on the fast-track to stardom. But he’s harboring perhaps the most potent secret a professional athlete can possess: his sexual preference. In this briskly paced, highly entertaining novel following three generations of Singers during Jess’s first year in The Show, Eric Goodman imagines what life might be like for a gay baseball player. Will Jess live in a confined closet or do what no baseball player has done yet? Goodman charts Jess’s path with tremendous sensitivity and grace, while detailing a season as riveting as watching your favorite underdog take their shot at the golden ring. Written with Goodman’s usual flair, humor, and zing—not to mention his deep knowledge and love of baseball—Curveball is a feel-good love story in which virtue and a wicked curve triumph over considerable adversity. “Fast and fun, Curveball, like its predecessor, In Days of Awe, is the best kind of sports story—gripping, poetic, and down-to-the wire. Even the non-fan will get swept away. This isn’t just a story about baseball...it’s about family and secrets and love, and about what’s passed on from one generation to the next. I don’t know anyone who writes about baseball like Eric Goodman. He’s got the savvy of an old pro, and the velocity of a young prospect.” —Rajiv Joseph

Book Good God but You Smart

Download or read book Good God but You Smart written by Nichole E. Stanford and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Cajuns as a case study, Good God but You Smart! explores the subtle ways language bias is used in classrooms, within families, and in pop culture references to enforce systemic economic inequality. It is the first book in composition studies to examine comprehensively, and from an insider’s perspective, the cultural and linguistic assimilation of Cajuns in Louisiana. The study investigates the complicated motivations and cultural concessions of upwardly mobile Cajuns who “choose” to self-censor—to speak Standardized English over the Cajun English that carries their cultural identity. Drawing on surveys of English teachers in four Louisiana colleges, previously unpublished archival data, and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the legitimate language, author Nichole Stanford explores how socioeconomic and political pressures rooted in language prejudice make code switching, or self-censoring in public, seem a responsible decision. Yet teaching students to skirt others’ prejudice toward certain dialects only puts off actually dealing with the prejudice. Focusing on what goes on outside classrooms, Stanford critiques code switching and cautions users of code meshing that pedagogical responses within the educational system are limited by the reproductive function of schools. Each theory section includes parallel memoir sections in the Cajun tradition of storytelling to open an experiential window to the study without technical language. Through its explication of language legitimacy and its grounding in lived experience, Good God but You Smart! is an essential addition to the pedagogical canon of language minority studies like those of Villanueva, Gilyard, Smitherman, and Rose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "…….a thriller that opens along the lines of Robin Cook; but with more social and psychological issues, which are explored in greater, more satisfying detail. Its progression from a seemingly singular experience to humanity’s greatest catastrophe creates a fine cross-genre experience between medical novel, thriller, and sci-fi that keeps readers on their toes……" — D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review Gabriel, Rachel, Lester, Adonis and Charlotte; fictional characters whose lives mirror modern day challenges. Who will defy the odds? What will happen to bring them together? Novelist and Gastroenterologist Michael Weisberg, M.D. crafted the idea for In The End from a routine procedure. Before putting patients to sleep for their colonoscopies, he asks them if they have any questions. Many comically reply, "Doc, what's the meaning of life?" He always replies that this question cannot be answered because there is no one meaning to life, but instead the question should be, what gives meaning to your individual life?

Book Swinging the Maelstrom

  • ISBN : 0776620878
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Swinging the Maelstrom written by Malcolm Lowry and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swinging the Maelstrom is the story of a musician enduring existence in the Bellevue psychiatric hospital in New York. Written during his happiest and most fruitful years, this novella reveals the deep healing influence that the idyllic retreat at Dollarton had on Lowry. This long-overdue scholarly edition will allow scholars to engage in a genetic study of the text and reconstruct, step by step, the creative process that developed from a rather pessimistic and misanthropic vision of the world as a madhouse (The Last Address, 1936), via the apocalyptic metaphors of a world on the brink of Armageddon (The Last Address, 1939), to a world that, in spite of all its troubles, leaves room for self-irony and humanistic concern (Swinging the Maelstrom,1942–1944).
