Download or read book From Our Hearts To Yours written by GAWJJ and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September 28, 1995 Yesterday, as we were riding along for one of our car days, you asked me to tell you one of those candy stories that you referred to as the cost of food items when I was a child. I was delighted to know that my stories that I had shared with you were appreciated and remembered. So I thought that I would preserve some of those stories and memories just for you. I hope that you will keep the stories for your children and grandchildren. When I was a small child, about seven or eight, I shared my life and days with my sisters, Frances and Faye. I am the oldest. Many days, I was the babysitter. We lived with my mother; my grandmother, Mom Minnie; Aunt Polly; and my father, Daddy Stubb. We all moved about the house as it smelled of Christmas preparation. One of the unspoken traditions in our family was to make the whole house new and pretty. Sometimes we got new furniture, but all the time, we painted and papered the living room and kitchen. Freshly ironed and starched curtains were hung at the kitchen windows, and new drapes were put up in the living room. New, shiny linoleum was laid in the kitchen, and bright, soft carpet adorned the living room floor. The house was being prepared for His coming on Christmas Day.

Download or read book The Interruption That We Are written by Michael J. Hyde and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world of ever-increasing medical technology, a study of the need for wisdom, truth, and public moral argument In this provocative and interdisciplinary work, Michael J. Hyde develops a philosophy of communication ethics in which the practice of rhetoric plays a fundamental role in promoting and maintaining the health of our personal and communal existence. He examines how the force of interruption—the universal human capacity to challenge our complacent understanding of existence—is a catalyst for moral reflection and moral behavior. Hyde begins by reviewing the role of interruption in the history of the West, from the Big Bang to biblical figures to classical Greek and contemporary philosophers and rhetoricians to three modern thinkers: Søren Kierkegaard, Martin Heidegger, and Emmanuel Levinas. These thinkers demonstrate in various ways that interruption is not simply a heuristic tool, but constitutive of being human. After developing a critical assessment of these thinkers, Hyde offers four case studies in public moral argument that illustrate the applicability of his findings regarding our interruptive nature. These studies feature a patient suffering from heart disease, a disability rights activist defending her personhood, a young woman dying from brain cancer who must justify her decision, against staunch opposition, to opt for medical aid in dying, and the benefits and burdens of what is termed our "posthuman future" with its accelerating achievements in medical science and technology. These improvements are changing the nature of the interruption that we are, yet the wisdom of such progress has yet to be determined. Much more public moral argument is required. Hyde's philosophy of communication ethics not only calls for the cultivation of wisdom but also promotes the fight for truth, which is essential to the livelihood of democracy.

Download or read book Dear Body written by Brittany Williams and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring story of how one woman overcame her struggle with obesity by healing childhood trauma and confronting her innermost demons. Raised in a turbulent home, Brittany Williams learned to use food as a coping mechanism to manage her feelings at a young age. When she was 14, a family member’s comment “no man will want you with a pudgy figure like that” forever changed the way she viewed her body and opened a door, new and alluring, into the world of self-loathing, self-punishment, and dieting. Told with Brittany’s unflagging honesty and trademark vulnerability, Dear Body describes the tensions of growing up in a body that often felt more like a traitor than a friend. She details the slow but steady work that went into dismantling hard-wired behaviors as she learned to trust in herself, even as she faced setbacks like heartbreak, pregnancy loss, and marital infidelity. As we share in her deepest moments of joy and heartache, Brittany reveals that the path to healing requires much more than changing what you eat, and explains how she was finally able to take charge of the course of her health and her life. Filled with poignant lessons and hard-won advice, Dear Body is the story of a woman’s relationship with her body, and herself. A story unique to Brittany, but familiar to all of us.
