Bj, the human alpha of this pack of five dogs and one human, is also a trained animal body-worker. She shares both what her animal work and living with her pack have taught her. Book excerpt: Colonel Hamp Porter finds himself in the middle of two life-changing experiences, one concerning his personal life and the other concerning the security of his beloved United States of America. Hamp has just returned from the army after twenty six years of service. However, his plans of living out his life with his wife died two years ago with her. Now he faces an uncertain future, but he won't remain alone because he rekindles a "friendship" with Gwen whose marriage to a two-timing husband is nearing an end. Upon returning to his home in Steinhatchee, Florida, an area steeped in rumors and shady recollections of drug smuggling, Hamp settles into a normal routine of life fishing with his old friend Tom and visiting with Gwen whom he had found a job for with a friend of his. Normalcy is brief though. One morning Hamp receives a call from General Stone of the Department of Army Inspector General's office which embroils him in cloak and dagger experiences both in Europe at Hitler's old Eagle's Nest and in the Florida Keys with South American drug dealers. Little does he know at first that Herr Weismann, a Hitler clone , has already joined forces with wealthy and powerful men from around the globe for the purpose of stealing nuclear warheads to exchange for money with the drug lords for the purpose of bankrolling the furtherance of the Aryan race. After much plotting, several deaths, and many sleepless nights, Hamp and his select team secure the stolen warheads, capture the drug lords, and reestablish some sense of normalcy to his life in Steinhatchee, Florida.
Download or read book So Teach Us to Number Our Days written by L. Kephart-Nash and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘So Teach Us To Number Our Days’ grew from hearing of the increase in child and teenage suicides resulting from depression and, in particular, bullying. It can take many forms like stalking and harassment or verbal slander and physical assault. And, while it is not a new form of cruelty, bullying is worse for being so easy and far-reaching through anonymity over the internet. Written here is a depiction of the rippling effect of the pain and destruction from being bullied; linked in time with generations beginning with a young girl in a small town. Rachel loses her only protection from her tormentor when her brother goes off to war and is no longer there to watch over and defend his sister. Rachel’s life and future are stuck in time until, in her old age, she encounters and reaches out to a young boy sleeping in the woods in terrible need of help. Interlaced with their unfolding story are Bible Proverbs and other wisdoms which represent the revival of the faith her mother gave her. Rachel had been a journal-keeper, but her hidden books don’t turn up until the boy she loved and protected has grown up with a family of his own, that he includes her in, and she becomes the children’s ‘GiGi.’ Liam inherits Rachel’s secret-filled nineteenth-century home, unchanged since GiGi’s childhood, and he opens up the mystery of the reclusive woman who had saved him, discovering in the process he had also saved her from her lonely isolation. Through Rachel’s journals, and Liam’s own memories of his childhood, an old unsolved murder of a young bully comes to light, as well as an answer for the mysterious disappearance of Liam’s own mother. Young bullies grown up are apt to be bullies yet, just made more dangerous by the protection of social and political status. In this fictional story, the young bully is given a short life, murdered by someone unknown about two generations earlier. But the same bloodline produces another just as bad who becomes a cowardly assassin who, when justice happens, will live a long life—behind bars. There are many mysteries, twists, turns, and even a skeleton with no identity turning up in this tale that will keep readers engaged. Read, ponder, and then find a way to take a personal stand against bullying—being a Rachel, a Gabriel or an old Alan Ortonson!

Download or read book Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music written by Gregory Thornbury and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The riveting, untold story of the “Father of Christian Rock” and the conflicts that launched a billion-dollar industry at the dawn of America’s culture wars. In 1969, in Capitol Records' Hollywood studio, a blonde-haired troubadour named Larry Norman laid track for an album that would launch a new genre of music and one of the strangest, most interesting careers in modern rock. Having spent the bulk of the 1960s playing on bills with acts like the Who, Janis Joplin, and the Doors, Norman decided that he wanted to sing about the most countercultural subject of all: Jesus. Billboard called Norman “the most important songwriter since Paul Simon,” and his music would go on to inspire members of bands as diverse as U2, The Pixies, Guns ‘N Roses, and more. To a young generation of Christians who wanted a way to be different in the American cultural scene, Larry was a godsend—spinning songs about one’s eternal soul as deftly as he did ones critiquing consumerism, middle-class values, and the Vietnam War. To the religious establishment, however, he was a thorn in the side; and to secular music fans, he was an enigma, constantly offering up Jesus to problems they didn’t think were problems. Paul McCartney himself once told Larry, “You could be famous if you’d just drop the God stuff,” a statement that would foreshadow Norman’s ultimate demise. In Why Should the Devil Have all the Good Music?, Gregory Alan Thornbury draws on unparalleled access to Norman’s personal papers and archives to narrate the conflicts that defined the singer’s life, as he crisscrossed the developing fault lines between Evangelicals and mainstream American culture—friction that continues to this day. What emerges is a twisting, engrossing story about ambition, art, friendship, betrayal, and the turns one’s life can take when you believe God is on your side.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BJ Ward, an award-winning poet whose poetry and essays have been featured on National Public Radio and in publications such as The Sun Magazine, TriQuarterly, The Literary Review, and the New York Times, has brought together in one volume the fruits of his labor spanning over twenty years. Winner of the 2014 Paterson Award for Literary Excellence, this rich collection of thoughtful and often ironic reflections reveals both the reverence and irreverence of human experience. Jackleg Opera contains material from Ward's three previous books Landing in New Jersey with Soft Hands, 17 Love Poems with No Despair, and Gravedigger's Birthday, as well as thirty-five new poems that are reminiscent of the clear simple style of Poet Laureate Billy Collins. Under the Elm We left the party, walked / beneath a moon that seemed / more a spotlight than night, / until we found a tree. / We pressed against it / and the grass rose against us, / the sky continued to darken, / and soon days, weeks, migrations, / and metamorphoses passed / as we kissed ourselves out / of our bored lives. / Us--two thousand miles away now, / the grass still growing wild around our feet. "In poems that both honor and transcend his blue-collar roots, BJ Ward blends poignancy and humor with downright good storytelling, and takes his place among the brightest voices of his generation."--Stephen Dunn, winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry

Download or read book The Interpretation of Illness written by Frederic D. Homer and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georg Groddeck (1866-1934), who was trained as a physician but became famous for his success as a healer, introduced a radical concept in The Book of It that we virtually always cause our own illness and injury; therefore, we can cure and avoid both. Groddeck utilized the technique of psychoanalysis - which had just been invented by Freud - to communicate with the source of the illness, which he called the "the it" (or the map of the psyche). He believed the "it" had the power to cure illness as well as cause it. Perhaps science is catching up with Groddeck's notion, for modern currents in medicine suggest there is a linkage between the way we live, the way we think, and illness. Readings in behavioral medicine indicate that we do have control over our immune system; and empirical studies of behavior show a strong relationship between stress and illness. In The Interpretation of Illness, Homer goes beyond Groddeck's initial insight to emphasize that illness is a communication to others, especially a call for sympathy. No one consciously likes to be sick or hurt; but we all, consciously or unconsciously, tell others about our ills, expecting them to extend sympathy. Homer argues that if we change this pattern of communication - either by learning to forego sympathy or by gaining it in less destructive ways - we can prevent illness or alleviate existing symptoms. The change in communication involves expressing ourselves knowingly and deliberately to others. Interpretation is a series of letters from Homer, writing under the persona Augie, to a friend. Appropriately enough, this style is similar to the format used by Groddeck in The Book of the It.
