Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching is more than just speaking in public. The persuasion of people and the theory underlying it are precedents of modern propaganda. In his Rhetorica Ecclesiastica, Agostino Valier (1531-1606) outlines what a Catholic preacher should know before he is allowed to deliver his sermons. Closely related to Cardinal Charles Borromeo's entourage and to the directions emanating from the Council of Trent, this treatise was considered to be one of the most influential ones back in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and soon became a must for seminaries all over the world. After introducing Valier and the editorial approach he used, Manuel López-Muñoz offers a critical edition of the text aiming to recover the treatise and make it available to modern scholars.

Download or read book Poetry and Censorship in Counter Reformation Italy written by Jennifer Helm and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Poetry and Censorship Jennifer Helm offers insight into motives and strategies of Counter-Reformation censorship of poetry in Italy. Materials of Roman censorial authorities reveal why the control of poetry and of its reception was crucial to Counter-Reformation cultural politics. Censorship of poetry should enable the church to influence human inner life that ---from thought and belief to fantasy and feeling--- was evolving considerably at that time. The control of poetic genres and modes of writing played an important part here. Yet, to what extent censorship could affect poetic creation emerges from a manuscript of the Venetian poet Domenico Venier. The materials suggest the impact of Counter-Reformation censorship on poetry began earlier and was more extensive than has yet been propagated.
Download or read book Beyond Devotion written by Łukasz Cybulski and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2022-07-11 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is one of scarce studies of religious literature of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth conducted by scholars from both Poland and Lithuania. What makes this endeavour important is mainly the will to overcome the frontiers and strains of the modern world that encourage exploring separateness instead of the realities of deep mutual interdependency. Łukasz Cybulski and Kristina Rutkovska analyse secular and religious writings of secular authors as well as those belonging to the clergy and religious orders. Their main interest lies in exploring the different genres of early modern Polish and Lithuanian sermons and novels, and in tracing this heritage to its social and literary context through the works' material presence in manuscript form and in print. Other papers in this volume give insights into the origins of vernacular translations of the Holy Scriptures and the controversies surrounding them, as well as into the written testimonies of religious devotion and conversions. The aim has been not only to confront different kinds of texts and experiences, but to situate this heritage in its social and confessional context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Jozef IJsewijn’s most relevant essays collected in one volume Jozef IJsewijn. Humanism in the Low Countries contains twenty-one essays written by the late Professor Jozef IJsewijn during the period 1966-1996. All essays were selected by his pupil Professor Gilbert Tournoy, who collaborated with him since the foundation of the Seminarium Philologiae Humanisticae in 1966 until his untimely death in 1998. They are now published in one volume in homage to the most brilliant scholar in the field of Neo-Latin Studies of the twentieth century. A number of contributions focus on the life and/or work of a single humanist from the Netherlands, others have a more general nature and deal with the very beginning and the later blossoming of Neo-Latin literature in the Low Countries or with the relationship between humanism in the Low Countries and in other European countries. Hidden in a less-known journal or a Festschrift for a colleague, these studies are nowadays not always easy to find. This volume brings the most relevant essays of IJsewijn together and aims to contribute to the research and study of humanism and Neo-Latin literature in the Low Countries.

Download or read book Perspectives on Early Modern and Modern Intellectual History written by Joseph Marino and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on Early and Modern Intellectual History brings together several disciplines and historical periods, and three generations of scholars to celebrate the pedagogical and scholarly career of Nancy Struever, who taught in the Humanities Center and Department of History at The John Hopkins University. Twenty-three essays reflect the breadth of disciplinary competence and the standards of scholarly rigor that Stuever instilled in her students and demonstrates in her scholarship. The book is organized around three divisional areas of inquiry: Renaissance Humanism, Histories of Art, and Rhetorics, Philosophies, and Histories. The first part includes studies on Shakespeare and Ariosto; essays on Machiavelli, Caterina da Siena, and Lorenzo Valla; and Manetti on the library of Nicholas V. The section on histories of art contains contributions on L.B. Alberti, on early modern spectacle and the performance of images, and on rhetoric and art. The third section continues with discussions of rhetoric, history, and literature from a more theoretical viewpoint. The book concludes with a bibliography of Stuever's works. Authors include: Marvin Becker, Marjorie O'Rourke Boyle, Salvatore Camporeale, F. Edward Cranz, Elizabeth Cropper, Marc Fumaroli, Thomas M. Greene, Michael Ann Holly, J. G. A. Pocock, Charles Trinkaus, and Hayden White. Joseph Marino is an independent scholar and is with Current Analysis in Virginia. Melinda Schlitt is Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Arts, Dickinson College.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: From the mid-15th to the late 16th century, the polyphonic mass was considered both in practical and theoretical terms to be the central form of expression of Western art music, within which key compositional developments took place. Around 1500, moreover, there developed a sensitivity for the effective use and functionalisation of polyphonic music in both spiritual and secular ceremonies and rituals. This volume examines the polyphonic mass as an instrument for effective symbolic public communication within liturgical, artificial, denominational and political parameters, taking the style and history of the genre into account.
