Book excerpt: This study of European natural philosophy begins with the classical conceptions of Mind, Soul, Nature and the Unconscious and analyses the revival of these notions in the natural philosophy of the Renaissance and the Seventeenth century. The concept of the Unconscious acquired a major importance in the systems of the German vitalist biologists and the Idealistic philosophers of the Nineteenth century. Jacob shows how these various thinkers, as well as the German Romantic philosophers, and especially Schubert, Carus, Schopenhauer, and Hartmann, not only revived the ancient doctrines of the Soul in their metaphysical schemes but also anticipated the psychological theories of Jung, who, as a psychologist and philosopher, serves as the culminating point of the work. In the Appendix, the author points to the natural philosophical bases of the discussions of racial differences that emerged in the Nineteenth century alongside the investigations into the spiritual capacities of mankind. Alexander Jacob obtained his Ph.D. in the History of Ideas from Pennsylvania State University and is the author of Nobilitas: A Study of Aristocratic Philosophy from Ancient Greece to the Early Twentieth Century, and Atman: A Reconstruction of the Solar Cosmology of the Indo-Europeans. His major editions of German conservative political thinkers include Edgar Julius Jung: 's The Rule of the Inferiour, the anthology Europa: German Conservative Foreign Policy 1870-1940, and Houston Stewart Chamberlain's Political Ideals.

It is the first geological history of the world, stretching from the Earth’s origins to its foreseen end, and though Buffon was limited by the scientific knowledge of his era—the substance of the Earth was not, as he asserts, dragged out of the sun by a giant comet, nor is the sun’s heat generated by tidal forces—many of his deductions appear today as startling insights. Whether through subversive performative identity or by surgical sex change, the divinely made human person is now threatened with abolition and replacement by the self-made man and the man-made woman. In Metaphysics and Gender, Michele M. Schumacher offers a corrective to this distorted and distorting outlook, calling for the recovery of an anthropological vision rooted in recognition of the normative divine “art” of nature and of the likeness—and far greater unlikeness—between divine and human causality. Surveying contemporary transgender trends, Schumacher identifies and excavates their conceptual and ideological foundations in the gender theory of Judith Butler, the existentialist feminism of Simone de Beauvoir, and the atheistic existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre. To the erroneous philosophical presuppositions of these thinkers Schumacher contrasts the metaphysically grounded thought of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, advancing their positive account of the good of creation and of the meaning of ethical norms, human freedom and natural inclinations, and embodiment, and mounting a timely and trenchant defense of the divinely created human person.

Book excerpt: In his Problemata, Aristotle provided medieval thinkers with the occasion to inquire into the natural causes of the sexual desires of men to act upon or be acted upon by other men, thus bringing human sexuality into the purview of natural philosophers, whose aim it was to explain the causes of objects and events in nature. With this philosophical justification, some late medieval intellectuals asked whether such dispositions might arise from anatomy or from the psychological processes of habit formation. As the fourteenth-century philosopher Walter Burley observed, "Nothing natural is shameful." The authors, scribes, and readers willing to "contemplate base things" never argued that they were not vile, but most did share the conviction that they could be explained. From the evidence that has survived in manuscripts of and related to the Problemata, two narratives emerge: a chronicle of the earnest attempts of medieval medical theorists and natural philosophers to understand the cause of homosexual desires and pleasures in terms of natural processes, and an ongoing debate as to whether the sciences were equipped or permitted to deal with such subjects at all. Mining hundreds of texts and deciphering commentaries, indices, abbreviations, and marginalia, Joan Cadden shows how European scholars deployed a standard set of philosophical tools and a variety of rhetorical strategies to produce scientific approaches to sodomy.
