Book Wessel Gansfort 1419 1489 and Northern Humanism

Download or read book Wessel Gansfort 1419 1489 and Northern Humanism written by F. Akkerman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1993-09-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wessel Gansfort (1419-1489) is the author of a number of astute but difficult texts which indicate the high level of late-medieval spirituality and scholarship in northern Europe. Together with his younger friend Agricola (1444-1485) he ushered in the beginning of modern intellectual life in the northern part of the Netherlands (the province of Groningen) and adjoining Germany. This volume contains eight contributions on Gansfort, enlarging the range of perceptions of his work and personality for the first time since the major studies of 1917 and 1933 by Maarten van Rhijn. There are three additional articles on the Devotio Moderna and its influence, and eight on various subjects and personalities touching early Humanism and the Reformation in this range. Each of these studies is the result of entirely new and original research. The volume is concluded by a large bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This penultimate volume in Pelikan's acclaimed history of Christian doctrine—winner with Volume 3 of the Medieval Academy's prestigious Haskins Medal—encompasses the Reformation and the developments that led to it. "Only in America, and in this case from a Lutheran scholar, could we expect an examination so lacking in parti pris, a survey so perceptive, so free—and, one must say, the result of so much immense labor, so rewardingly presented."—John M. Todd, New York Times Book Review "Never wasting a word or losing a plot line, Pelikan builds on an array of sources that few in our era have the linguistic skill, genius or ambition to master."—Martin E. Marty, America "The use of both primary materials and secondary sources is impressive, and yet it is not too formidable for the intelligent layman."—William S. Barker, Eternity

  • Author : Wiktor Stoczkowski
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-06-20
  • ISBN : 9780521657303
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Explaining Human Origins written by Wiktor Stoczkowski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wiktor Stoczkowski, a palaeo-anthropologist, argues that the theories of human origins developed by archaeologists and physical anthropologists from the early nineteenth century to the present day are structurally similar to Western folk theories, and to the speculations of earlier philosophers. Reviewing a remarkable range of thinkers writing in a variety of European languages, he makes a convincing argument for this case. Even though the book criticises the lack of development in theories of human origins, its conclusion is optimistic about the power of the scientific approach to deliver more reliable theories - but only if the influences of popular discourse on its thinking are properly identified.
