Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People of Sheshatshit and their fellow lnnu attracted world-wide attention with a campaign against low-level flying exercises conducted over their land by NATO air forces. Thanks to Jose Mailhot's thirty-year-long acquaintance with this Labrador community. The book gives us far more than the conventional media image of Native Canadian society. This study of Innu social organization is based on the aboriginal point of view rather than the anthropologist's own theories. Readers will learn that contact between Europeans and the people of Sheshatshit created a particular form of social hierarchy not seen in other Innu communities and that in the system of proper names, Innu given names and nicknames are more important than family names, which are European.

Book The Lure of Faraway Places

Download or read book The Lure of Faraway Places written by Herb Pohl and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2007-05-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lure of Faraway Places is the publication canoeist Herb Pohl (1930-2006) did not live to see published. But Pohl’s words and images provide a unique portrait of Canada by one who was happiest when travelling our northern waterways alone. Austrian-born Herb Pohl died at the mouth of the Michipcoten River on July 17, 2006. He is remembered as "Canada’s most remarkable solo traveller." While mourning their loss, Herb Pohl’s friends found, to their surprise and delight, a manuscript of wilderness writings on his desk in his lakeside apartment in Burlington, Ontario. He had hoped one day to publish his work as a book. With help and commentary from best-selling canoe author and editor James Raffan, Natural Heritage is proud to present that book, Herb’s book, The Lure of Faraway Places. "There’s nothing like it in canoeing literature," says Raffan. "It’s part journal, part memoir, part wilderness philosophy and part tips and tricks of the most pragmatic kind written about parts of the country most of us will never see by the most committed and ambitious solo canoeist in Canadian history."

Download or read book Skin for Skin written by Gerald M. Sider and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, the Native peoples of northeastern Canada, both Inuit and Innu, have experienced epidemics of substance abuse, domestic violence, and youth suicide. Seeking to understand these transformations in the capacities of Native communities to resist cultural, economic, and political domination, Gerald M. Sider offers an ethnographic analysis of aboriginal Canadians' changing experiences of historical violence. He relates acts of communal self-destruction to colonial and postcolonial policies and practices, as well as to the end of the fur and sealskin trades. Autonomy and dignity within Native communities have eroded as individuals have been deprived of their livelihoods and treated by the state and corporations as if they were disposable. Yet Native peoples' possession of valuable resources provides them with some income and power to negotiate with state and business interests. Sider's assessment of the health of Native communities in the Canadian province of Labrador is filled with potentially useful findings for Native peoples there and elsewhere. While harrowing, his account also suggests hope, which he finds in the expressiveness and power of Native peoples to struggle for a better tomorrow within and against domination.
