Book David Livingstone and the Myth of African Poverty and Disease

Download or read book David Livingstone and the Myth of African Poverty and Disease written by Sjoerd Rijpma and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study about David Livingstone is different from all other publications about him. Here, Livingstone is not the main topic of interest; the focus of the author is on nutrition and health in pre-colonial Africa and Livingstone is his key informant. David Livingstone and the Myth of African Poverty and Disease is an unusual book. After a close examination of Livingstone’s writings and comparative reading of contemporary authors, Sjoerd Rijpma has been able to draw cautious conclusions about the relatively favourable conditions of health and nutrition in southern and central Africa during the pre-colonial period. His findings shed new light on the medical history of Sub-Saharan Africa. The surprise awaiting travellers in and also before 19th century Africa was that the inhabitants of the interior, even the ‘slaves’, were healthier and better fed than many of their contemporaries in Europe’s Industrial Revolution. “An impressive piece of scholarship, truly forensic in its close reading and re-reading of Livingstone’s published works and those of other travellers during the same era, clearly a labour of love which has taken years to complete” (Joanna Lewis).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its earliest days, photography was seen as depicting its subjects with such objectivity as to be inherently free of ideological bias. Today we are rightly more skeptical -- at least most of the time. When it comes to photography from the past, we tend to set some of our skepticism aside. But should we? In Light on Darkness? T. Jack Thompson, a leading historian of African Christianity, revisits the body of photography generated by British missionaries to sub-Saharan Africa in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and demonstrates that much more is going on in these images than meets the eye. This volume offers a careful reassessment of missionary photographers, their photographs, and their African and European audiences. Several dozen fascinating photographs from the period are included.

  • Author : Lawrence Dritsas

  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Zambesi written by Lawrence Dritsas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Zambesi" tells the story of David Livingstone's Zambesi Expedition. It exposes the rivalry among some of Victorian Britain's leading establishment figures and institutions - including the Foreign Office, the Royal Society, Royal Geographical Society, British Museum, Kew Gardens and the Admiralty - as abolitionists, scientists, and entrepreneurs sought to promote and protect their differing interests. Making use of letters, documents and materials neglected by previous writers and researchers, the author reveals how tensions arose from the very beginning between those in pursuit of knowledge for its own sake and the proponents of the civilizing missions who saw scientific knowledge as the utilitarian means to a social end. The result is an exciting story involving one of England's most feted Victorian heroes that offers important new insights in the practice and politics of expeditionary science in Victorian England. This is the definitive account of the expedition to date.

Book The End of Chidyerano

Download or read book The End of Chidyerano written by Elias Mandala and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2005-10-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Mandala argues that there is more to food studies than the analysis of famine—that hunger exists only as an integral part of abundance. Basing his case on the history of southern Malawi, he identifies several factors that explain why, although notorious for its annual food deficits, the region is not a land of frequent famine. By proving that seasonal hunger does not lead to famine in the absence of political crisis, and showing in detail how rare events get their meaning from the everyday, Mandela underscores the need to understand the daily and seasonal routines of food cultivation and eating in their own right.

Book Work and Control in a Peasant Economy

Download or read book Work and Control in a Peasant Economy written by Elias Coutinho Mandala and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peasants in southern Africa have too often been portrayed as technologically backward, chronically underemployed, and politically passive. Such views, says Elias Mandala in this finely particularized study of the lower Tchiri Valley in Malawi, partake more of myth than reality. Peasants are first and foremost laborers, he points out, who spend most of their lives working with their hands to meet basic human needs. In making labor the center of his analysis, Mandala refocuses attention on peasants as workers, actively engaged in the effort to control their own destinies through complex forms of both resistance and accommodation. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and archival material, Mandala weaves together aspects of peasant economy usually ignored or treated separately, such as the ecological conditions of production, the division of labor between and within households, and gender and generational conflict.
