  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Daumier and Exoticism written by Elizabeth C. Childs and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known as a satirist of Parisian politics and daily life, Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) was a prolific caricaturist. This book is the first to examine the role of exoticism in his art, and to offer a detailed history of the journal Le Charivari in which the lithographs appeared. These satires of China, Haiti, the United States, Africa, and the Middle East not only target the theater of international politics, but also draw on a broad range of physical stereotypes supported by contemporary ideas about race and cultural difference. In an art of comic inversion, Daumier used the exotic to expose the foibles and pretensions of the Parisian bourgeoisie. A pacifist and a Republican, Daumier also satirized the non-European world in order to covertly attack the imperialism of Napoléon III in an age of press censorship. Idealistic as well as pragmatic, he used humor to stage political critique as well as to envision a more unified and compassionate world.

Book From a Photograph

    Book Details:
  • Author : Geoffrey Belknap
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-08-13
  • ISBN : 1000211495
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book From a Photograph written by Geoffrey Belknap and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its early history, photography's authenticity was contested and challenged: how true a representation of reality can a photograph provide? Does the reproduction of a photograph affect its value as authentic or not? From a Photograph examines these questions in the light of the early scientific periodical press, exploring how the perceived veracity of a photograph, its use as scientific evidence and the technologies developed for printing it were intimately connected. Before photomechanical printing processes became widely used in the 1890s, scientific periodicals were unable to reproduce photographs and instead included these photographic images as engravings, with the label ‘from a photograph’. Consequently, every image was mediated by a human interlocutor, introducing the potential for error and misinterpretation. Rather than ‘reading’ photographs in the context of where or how they were taken, this book emphasises the importance of understanding how photographs are reproduced. It explores and compares the value of photography as authentic proof in both popular and scientific publications during this period of significant technological developments and a growing readership. Three case studies investigate different uses of photography in print: using pigeons to transport microphotographs during the Franco-Prussian War; the debate surrounding the development of instantaneous photography; and finally the photographs taken of the Transit of Venus in 1874, unseen by the human eye but captured on camera and made accessible to the public through the periodical.Addressing a largely overlooked area of photographic history, From a Photograph makes an important contribution to this interdisciplinary research and will be of interest to historians of photography, print culture and science.

Book Non Linear Mathematics Vol I

Download or read book Non Linear Mathematics Vol I written by Thomas L., Saaty and published by RWS Publications. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We are surrounded and deeply involved, in the natural world, with non- linear events which are not necessarily mathematical," the authors write. "For example . . . the nonlinear problem of pedalling a bicycle up and down a hillside. On a grand scale . . . the struggle for existence between two species, one of which preys exclusively on the other." This book is' for mathematicians and researchers who believe that "nonlinear mathematics is' the mathematics of today"; it is also for economists, engineers, operations analysts, "the reader who has been thus bemused into an artificially linear conception of the universe." Nonlinear Mathematics is the first attempt to consider the widest range of nonlinear topics found in the -scattered literature. Accessible to non- mathematics professionals as well as college seniors and graduates, it offers a discussion both particular and broad enough to stimulate research towards a unifying theory of nonlinear mathematics. Ideas are presented "according to existence and uniqueness theorems, characterization (e.g., stability and asymptotic behavior), construction of solutions, convergence, approximation and errors."

Book Non Linear Mathematics Vol II

Download or read book Non Linear Mathematics Vol II written by Thomas L. Saaty and published by RWS Publications. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear equations have existed for hundreds of years; their systematic study, however, is a relatively recent phenomenon. This volume, together with its companion', Nonlinear Matliematics Vol. I, provides exceptionally comprehensive coverage of this recently formed area of study. It encompasses both older and more recent developments in the field of equations, with particular emphasis on nonlinear equations because, as Professor Saaty maintains, "that is what is needed today." Together the two volumes cover all the major types of classical equations (except partial differential equations, which require a separate volume). This volume includes material on seven types: operator equations, functional equations, difference equations, delay-differential equations, integral equations, integro-differential equations and stochastic differential equations. Special emphasis is placed on linear and nonlinear equations in function spaces and On general methods of solving different types of such equations. Above all, this book is practical. It reviews the variety of existing types of equations and provides methods for their solution. It is meant to help the reader acquire new methods for formulating problems. Its clear organization and copious references make it suitable for graduate students as well as scientists, technologists and mathematicians.

Book Caricature and French Political Culture 1830 1848

Download or read book Caricature and French Political Culture 1830 1848 written by David S. Kerr and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2000-09-07 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Philipon (1800-1862) was the founder of the satirical illustrated press in France. With the newspapers he owned and directed, La Caricature and Le Charivari, he led an unprecedentedly coherent and vitriolic campaign of disrespect against King Louis-Philippe and his regime. Using a group of young caricaturists (the most talented of whom were Daumier, Grandville, and Travies) and the collaboration of a gifted team of writers (including Balzac) he crafted a new language of opposition. This book is the first full scholarly study of the structure of the illustrated press in the 1830s, its contribution to political debate in France, the dissemination of caricature and its potential as political propaganda, and the links between caricature and other forms of political-cultural discourse under the July Monarchy.

Book The Constitutional Monarchy in France 1814 48

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians in France assume that the restoration of Monarchy after the defeat of Napoleon was doomed. The first compact recent history of the period in English, this book reveals that although the French experimented with two Monarchies and a Republic (1814 - 48), there was substantial stability. The Institutional framework constructed during the Revolutionary years (1789 - 1814) remained intact, and the ruling elites retained basic control.

Book Republicanism in Nineteenth Century France 1814 1871

Download or read book Republicanism in Nineteenth Century France 1814 1871 written by Pamela Pilbeam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1995-02-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fascinating survey of nineteenth-century republicanism, the first of its kind this century. It investigates why it was that although France was one of the first countries in modern Europe to become a republic in 1792, it was nearly a hundred years before a republic was acceptable to the majority. Pamela Pilbeam suggests that republicanism was a witch's brew of Enlightenment rationality, bloody memories and conflicting socialist expectations. The book concludes that the successful republic of 1871 used the rhetoric of democracy to conceal persistent elitism.
