Book excerpt: For any type of software to become standard, whether a third genera tion language or an integrated project support environment (IPSE), it must undergo a series of modifications and updates which are a direct result of theoretical and empirical knowledge gained in the process. The database approach to the design of general purpose infonn ation systems has undergone a series of revisions during the last twenty years which have established it as a winner in many different spheres of infonnation processing, including expert systems and real time control. It is now widely recognised by academics and practitioners alike, that the use of a database management system (DBMS) as the under lying software tool for the development of infonnation/knowledge based systems can lead to environments which are: (a) flexible, (b) efficient, (c) user-friendly, (d) free from duplication, and (e) fully controllable. The concept of a DBMS is now mature and has produced the software necessary to design the actual database holding the data. The database languages proposed recently by the International Organisa tion for Standardisation (ISO) are thorough enough for the design of the necessary software compilers (i.e programs which translate the high level commands into machine language for fast execution by the computer hardware). The ISO languages adopt two basic models of data and therefore two different sets of commands: (a) the relational, implemented via the relational database language (RDL), and (b) the network, imple mented via the network database language (NDL).

Book excerpt: The Fourth International Workshop on Database Programming Languages - Object Models and Languages (DBPL-4) took place in Manhattan, New York City, 30 August-1 September 1993. The areas of interest and the format of DBPL-4 focused on the integration of programming languages, object models, type systems and database systems. As in the previous DBPL workshops, the setting was informal, allowing the participants to actively discuss and argue about the ideas presented in the talks. The comments and remarks made by the participants during and after the presentations were taken into account in the preparation of the final versions of the papers. The result, we believe, is a set of excellent papers. The DBPL sequence is closely related to the sequence of International Workshops on Persistent Object Systems (POS), first started in 1985. While the DBPL workshops focus on language and model issues, the POS workshops have focused on implementation issues; thus the two sequences complement each other. Many researchers participate in both workshop series. The eight sessions of the technical program of DBPL-4 were as follows: 1. Bulk types and their query languages (two sessions). 2. Object models and languages. 3. Data types with order. 4. Mechanisms to support persistence, reflection, and extensibility. 5. Query optimization and integrity constraints. 6. Logic-based models. 7. Implementation and performance issues.

This is mainly because of its ability to reduce obstacles in sharing data among diverse applications and databases by providing a common format for expressing data structure and content. The scope of this project is to investigate the current stage of XML and its usage for database systems. In order to understand the XML database technology a general introduction to both database systems and XML is provided to the reader in chapter two and three. Chapter four and five deal with the methodology and findings of this project. These chapters rely on articles, case studies and surveys which are examined and evaluated. Finally, a conclusion and review chapter is included. The analysis of the current adoption of XML among software developers revealed that in Spring 2001 more than one third of international developers already used XML. In 2001 they spent about 5.4% of their development time using XML. For 2002 it is predicted that they will spend an average of 9% of their development time using XML. Concerning XML databases there are currently two major XML related database types available. These are native XML and XML enabled relational databases. Native XML databases are constructed to use the recommended XML standards to the most possible extent. Thereby, the XML document is the fundamental unit of storage. XML enabled relational databases are relational databases equipped with an additional layer to map XML content in to the relational tables. XML documents are only used as a means of transport between the database systems. Native XML databases are better suited for dealing with document structured content whilst XML enabled relational databases are more appropriate to handle data structured content such as numbers and pieces of text. The implementation process of an XML related database system into an organisation requires the right management of change to be able to handle both the technology involved and the people affected by the database system. Therefore effective change management must cover the whole project life cycle from the formulation of the strategy to the achievement of the benefits.
