Book excerpt: Invasive alien species are non-indigenous taxa introduced to areas beyond their natural distribution and bio-geographical barriers by human activity, with important impacts on biodiversity, human health and ecosystem services. With the human population being higher than ever before and increasing, together with unprecedented rates of mobility of humans and goods, the introduction of new invasive species is more common than ever and is at the forefront of research in many disciplines such as ecology, epidemiology and food security. The mechanisms of successful introduction, establishment and spread of invasive alien species are highly complex as biological, social, geographic, economic and climatic factors influence the way an invasive species is introduced and determine the options available for its eventual detection and control. With the rapid development of smart sensors, social networks, digital maps and remotely-sensed imagery, spatio-temporal data are more ubiquitous and richer than ever before. The availability of such large datasets (Big data) poses great challenges in data analysis. In addition, increased availability of computing power facilitates the use of computationally-intensive methods for the analysis of such data. Thus new methods are needed to efficiently study and understand biological invasions. A Research Topic held in Frontiers Environmental Informatics aimed to address this topic. Methods are defined in the widest terms and may be analytical, practical or conceptual. Among others, a key aim of the thematic was to maximize the use of the proposed methods/techniques by the scientific community and environmental stakeholders.

Book excerpt: Invasive alien species are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss, due to their ability to disperse and cause negative effects on native species and the environment. To reduce the introduction of invasive alien species in the future, preventive measures need to be implemented, and knowledge about pathways of introduction of new and potentially invasive alien species can facilitate tailor-made measures. The aim of this project is to contribute to the fulfilment of obligations in the CBD Aichi target 9 and the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020 target 5, by identifying and prioritising the most significant pathways of introduction for invasive alien species by conducting a pathway analysis and horizon scanning. This identification and prioritisation is done for 10 participating countries and territories part of the NOBANIS network to assist them in minimising and preventing further introductions and establishment of invasive alien species. Based on the results from the pathway analysis and horizon scanning, this report presents a prioritised list of pathways of interest, general recommendations on measures to control pathways of interest, and advice on development of an early warning system for invasive alien species.

Book excerpt: Species distribution models (SDMs) are valuable risk assessment tools in the management of invasive species, for which early detection and containment are critical. Few studies have evaluated the utility of invasive SDMs trained on temporally-biased presence data. While the abundance and range of occurrence records may increase with time after invasion, management objectives become more difficult to achieve as a destructive species nears establishment. This research assesses the relative predictive ability of models for the invasive shot hole borer (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae: Euwallacea sp. nr. fornicatus), which was first detected in Southern California in 2003. A series of 100-meter resolution models were developed in Maxent, selected for its ability to produce reliable models with relatively few occurrence records. Models were trained using data from five chronologically cumulative sampling periods, which simulate stages of invasion. The effects of spatial extent and spatial filtering were also examined. All models achieved high AUC (area under the receiver operating curve) values > 0.93 and correctly classified 87.7 i 18.8% of independent test records, indicating high model performance regardless of the degree of temporal bias. The leading contributing variables were minimum temperature of the coldest month (for sixteen models) or percent impervious surface (for four models). Sensitivity was consistently higher for models that used the larger spatial extent, which suggests that for an emerging species, larger backgrounds may be less restrictive on model outcomes. Spatial filtering produced more discriminating results without compromising model sensitivity. The study finds that invasive SDMs can be useful in identifying areas vulnerable to invasion, particularly if they are integrated into adaptive management strategies.

Book excerpt: Determining species' distributions and understanding the underlying factors that limit species' ranges is a central objective in ecological research. This pursuit is especially important to the study of invasive species and understanding where species are likely to be able to survive outside of their native range. Invasive species can cause significant ecological and economic damages, and opportunities for species introduction are becoming increasingly available in contemporary society. In order to minimize the impacts of invasive species, preventing species from being introduced and early detection are paramount. This dissertation presents research that utilizes species distribution modeling to identify potential ranges for non-native coastal marine species as a component of assessing invasion risk when combined with introduction likelihood. Three chapters are presented that examine different aspects of this research. In chapter 1, disparities between observed and modeled richness are identified on a global scale for a set of invasive ascidians. Several regions are highlighted as having lower observed richness than modeled richness, primarily in subtropical and tropical regions. While these regions are identified as potentially at risk from invasion, it is not possible to differentiate between under invaded and under sampled regions, which leads to a discussion on bias in sampling and observation data. Chapter two presents a direct assessment of invasion risk as the result of commercial shipping for five crab species globally. Using species presence observations and major world port locations, I calculate the introduction likelihood as a function of distance from a port. This is then overlaid on modeled environmental suitability for each species resulting in an assessment of relative invasion risk. Major ports are globally distributed, but they have uneven prevalence. Temperate locations primarily in the northern hemisphere have the highest introduction likelihood, and these regions represent hotspots for invasion risk for those species with environmental suitability in these areas. However, this chapter considers the impact of having an incomplete representation of suitable conditions in the training data and how this impacts the final invasion risk assessment. In chapter three, I look specifically at invasion risk in New Zealand for eight species of concern. I model environmental suitability for current and future conditions to see how climate change might impact expected distributions and discuss the implications this has on invasion risk. Several temperate species are modeled to lose potentially suitable environments in New Zealand with a warmer climate. For these species, invasion risk may decrease over time. In contrast, species that are tolerant of warmer climates, such as Caulerpa taxifolia, will likely have greater environmental suitability as the result of climate change and have a higher invasion risk in the future as more points of introduction overlap with suitable environments. This chapter also looks at the impact of model parameterization (including feature type, background, environmental layer, and threshold selection) on the model output and argues for an ecological sensible model despite this parameterization not having the highest fit according to common metrics (area under the curve and true skill statistic). Invasive species are a significant concern worldwide, and having a better sense of where species pose the greatest risk of invasion is helpful to aid in mitigating associated dangers. This research supports the use of species distribution models to aid in assessing invasion risk, but it highlights several important factors to consider when utilizing these models.

Book excerpt: The European Union Regulation (EU) 1143/2014 on invasive alien species (IAS) establishes an EU-wide framework for action to prevent, minimise and mitigate the adverse impacts of IAS on biodiversity and centres around the development of a list of IAS of EU Concern. The initial list of IAS of EU concern will be based on available risk assessments compliant with agreed minimum standards but horizon scanning is seen as critical to inform future updating of the list, in order to prioritise the most threatening new and emerging IAS. A workshop was held with the overarching aim of reviewing and validating an approach to horizon scanning to derive a ranked list of IAS which are likely to arrive, establish, spread and have an impact on biodiversity or related ecosystem services in the EU over the next decade. The agreed horizon scanning approach involved two distinct phases: i) Preliminary consultation between experts within five thematic groups to derive initial scores; ii) Consensus-building across expert groups including extensive discussion on species rankings coupled with review and moderation of scores across groups. The outcome of the horizon scanning was a list of 95 species, including all taxa (except microorganisms) within marine, terrestrial and freshwater environments, considered as very high or high priority for risk assessment.

Book excerpt: Since 2008, the Invasive Species Early Detection (ISED) Program of the Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network (ERMN) has surveyed for and detected incipient populations of invasive plants, animals, and diseases in ERMN parks. Early detection of invasive species followed by rapid response can detect and eradicate incipient populations before they have a chance to become widely established; thus eliminating the need for costly and resource-intensive control programs. While long-term changes associated with established invasive species are being monitored through other protocols, the ISED program focuses on new populations of invasive species early in their invasion. Only when invasions are caught early will the chance of eradication remain high. Known ecological impacts of invasive species include loss of threatened and endangered species, altered structure and composition of terrestrial and aquatic communities, and reduction in overall species diversity.
