Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE BETTY TRASK PRIZE 2016 From the critically acclaimed, award-winning author of Diving Belles: a beautifully bewitching novel of memories, mothers, ghosts and daughters 'Deeply poetic; dreamy and thought-provoking' Joanne Harris, author of Chocolat 'A beautifully observed study of mothers and daughters, loss and recovery, that never puts a foot wrong' Sarah Waters, Guardian, Best Reads of the Year Pearl doesn't know how she's ended up in the river – the same messy, cacophonous river in the same rain-soaked valley she'd been stuck in for years. Or why, for that matter, she'd been stupid enough to fall down those rickety stairs. Ada, Pearl's daughter, doesn't know how she's ended up back in the house she left thirteen years ago – with no heating apart from a fire she can't light, no way of getting around apart from an old car she's scared to drive, and no company apart from echoing footsteps on the damp floorboards. With her daughter Pepper, she starts to sort through Pearl's things, clearing the house so she can leave and not look back. Pepper has grown used to following her restless mother from place to place, but this house, with its faded photographs, its boxes of cameras and its stuffed jackdaw, is something new. Fascinated by the scattering of people she meets, by the river that unfurls through the valley, and by the strange old woman who sits on the bank with her feet in the cold, coppery water, Pepper doesn't know why anyone would ever want to leave. As the first frosts of autumn herald the coming of a long winter and Pepper and Ada find themselves irresistibly entangled with the life of the valley, each will discover the ways that places can take root inside us and bind us together.

Book excerpt: "My initial goal was to write a book on the defeat of Satan in New Testament theology covering all the witnesses of the New Testament using a title suchas 'falling like lightning.' ... But it became evident that although the defeat of Satan is central to the exorcisms of the synoptic gospels, many authors of the New Testament simply do not speak explicitly about a 'defeat of Satan.' For example, Paul, Ephesians and Colossians, if they explicitly speak of the devil (or allude to him), speak instead of nbeing redeemed from the dominion of Satan. ... I therefore moved more in the direction of considering how the human being is redeemed from the effects of Satan."--Preface.

Book Exiles Traveling

Download or read book Exiles Traveling written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents for the first time a study of the interface between exile and travel within the context of exile from Nazi Germany. The nineteen essays share the overarching aim to compare the tropes of travel and exile as generators of a critical discourse and as central categories within German exile, in particular literature, music and film. The essays are guided by powerful questions: How does travel compare to exile, and how much overlap is there between these two categories? How do exiles travel, as practitioners of displacement? Or rather, to what extent does the concept of travel apply to the exilic predicament? Do the terms “exile” and “travel” still have validity in our postmodern era of cosmopolitanism, ever increasing mobility, the embrace of otherness, and tourism? How does exile literature in which travel is thematized compare to the tradition(s) of travel writing? And how are the critical moments of leavetaking, re-membering home, and return imagined and narrated? The essays feature numerous German and Austrian authors, musicians, and filmmakers and lend fresh insights into German Exile and the field of Exile Studies at large.

Book Gospel Perspectives Volume 5

Download or read book Gospel Perspectives Volume 5 written by David Wenham and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-03-29 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their search for the historical Jesus, scholars have rightly focused their attention on the evidence of the four canonical gospels, but they have often given insufficient attention to the importance of other early Christian writings. This volume by an international team of authors, writing under the auspices of the Tyndale House Gospels Research Project, seeks to shed light on the gospels from outside the gospels. It includes essays on Paul's use of the Jesus tradition, the evidence of other New Testament writers, the Gospel of Thomas, the apocryphal gospels, the apostolic fathers, and on Jewish and classical traditions. The essays break new ground in various respects; and the volume as a whole, which is concluded by Dr. Richard Bauckham with an article on the problems and prospects of studying non-canonical gospel traditions, should prove a significant stimulus to ongoing research in this neglected area.

Book Disruption in the Arts

Download or read book Disruption in the Arts written by Lars Koch and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume examines from a comparative perspective the phenomenon of aesthetic disruption within the various arts in contemporary culture. It assumes that the political potential of contemporary art is not solely derived from presenting its audiences with openly political content, but rather from creating a space of perception and interaction using formal means: a space that makes hegemonic structures of action and communication observable, thus problematizing their self-evidence. The contributions conceptualize historical and contemporary politics of form in the media, which aim to be more than mere shock strategies, which are concerned not just with the ‘narcissistic’ exhibition of art as art, but also with the creation of a new common horizon of experience. They combine the analysis of paradigmatic works, procedures and actions with reference to theoretical debates in the fields of literature, media and art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The essay-collection shows how textual, visual, auditive or performative strategies disclose their own ways of functioning, intervene in automated processes of reception and thus work on stimulating a sense of political possibilities. The editors acknowledge support from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program (FP 7/ 2007–2013), ERC grant agreement no. 312454.

Book excerpt: The Edwardian-era Steampunk tale of Great Britain's greatest detective, Sax Raker, whose investigation into a mysterious, vanishing killer threatens to unravel the entire world around him. The year is 1907, and Britain has entered into a terrifying war with Ruritania, whose strange metal planes darken the skies, and whose monstrous war engines cast looming shadows from across the channel. Doctor Robert Watcham, lately returned to London from the front, makes his homecoming to Dilke Street. There lives his old friend and England's greatest amateur detective, Sax Raker. Even as his beloved city prepares for war, Raker is himself about to embark on the strangest (and, perhaps, the most important) investigation of his career: the case of the man who wasn't there. Is the mysterious, vanishing killer, at last, evidence for Raker's long-held belief in a secret criminal mastermind? Is it some apparition uniquely belonging to this city, a place that seems to have lost all semblance of sense two years ago? Or do all the signs point to something much, much worse?
