Book excerpt: In his first novel since the Pulitzer Prize-winning House Made of Dawn, N. Scott Momaday shapes the ancient Kiowa myth of a boy who turned into a bear into a timeless American classic. The Ancient Child juxtaposes Indian lore and Wild West legend into a hypnotic, often lyrical contemporary novel--the story of Locke Setman, known as Set, a Native American raised far from the reservation by his adoptive father. Set feels a strange aching in his soul and, returning to tribal lands for the funeral of his grandmother, is drawn irresistibly to the fabled bear-boy. When he meets Grey, a beautiful young medicine woman with a visionary gift, his world is turned upside down. Here is a magical saga of one man's tormented search for his identity--a quintessential American novel, and a great one.

Book Seneca and Celestina

Download or read book Seneca and Celestina written by Louise Fothergill-Payne and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-08-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the reason and intent behind the many Senecan and pseudo-Senecan quotations in Fernando de Rojas' masterpiece Celestina (1499), which enjoyed enormous popularity in sixteenth-century Europe. The author considers the importance attached to Senecan thought in the oral, scholarly and literary traditions of fifteenth-century Spain and demonstrates how readers' tastes and sensibilities were shaped by it. The main themes of Celestina, such as self-seeking friendship and love, pleasure and sorrow, gifts and riches, greed, suicide and death, are shown to be rooted in this intellectual background. The Senecan tradition, albeit treated in a satirical vein, is also seen as underlying the later additions and interpolations to the text, with a shift towards Seneca's tragedies in response to changes in fashion; Professor Fothergill-Payne reveals that even the Petrarchan quotations in Celestina have Senecan sources. Seneca and Celestina thus offers a fresh perspective on the literary and intellectual sources that shaped this famous book.

Book The Worlds of Renaissance Melancholy

Download or read book The Worlds of Renaissance Melancholy written by Angus Gowland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angus Gowland investigates the theory of melancholy and its many applications in the Renaissance by means of a wide-ranging contextual analysis of Robert Burton's encyclopaedic Anatomy of Melancholy (first published in 1621). Approaching the Anatomy as the culmination of early modern medical, philosophical and spiritual inquiry about melancholy, Gowland examines the ways in which Burton exploited the moral psychology central to the Renaissance understanding of the condition to construct a critical vision of his intellectual and political environment. In the first sustained analysis of the evolving relationship of the Anatomy (in the various versions issued between 1621 and 1651) to late Renaissance humanist learning and early seventeenth-century England and Europe, Gowland corrects the prevailing view of the work as an unreflective digest of other authors' opinions, and reveals the Anatomy's character as a polemical literary engagement with the live intellectual, religious and political issues of its day.

Book The Play in the Mirror

Download or read book The Play in the Mirror written by Matthew D. Stroud and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a psychoanalyst with massive humanistic erudition, Jacques Lacan has a great deal to offer any discipline concerned with the human condition. The Play in the Mirror seeks to bring together some of Lacan's fundamental concepts, primarily from his Ecrits and from Seminars 1, 2, 7, 11, and 20, as well as texts from ten Spanish Baroque comedias that also deal with the human condition." "The Play in the Mirror does not try to psychoanalyze characters, and its scope extends to spectators, readers, and literary critics who are also subject to the same lack, otherness, and desire. In a play, the subjects linked by the mirrors are the author and the spectator, brought together through language and desire through the theatrical performance. All plays and all critical articles are expressions of the desires of the creators. The critical act represents the intersubjective relationship, marked with the misunderstanding, defensiveness, rivalry, and attempts to dominate that characterize all dealings between two subjects. Even in criticism, the desire of the split subject insists." "Throughout the book, the focus is on the more philosophical underpinnings of both discourses. The premodern comedia and Lacan's postmodern perspective seem naturally to inform each other regarding the essential lack at the core of the human subject, the insistence of desire, and the inevitable failure of efforts to establish a unified subject, an orderly society, or a single valid interpretation of a literary text."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
