Book Between the Dark and the Daylight

Download or read book Between the Dark and the Daylight written by Joan Chittister and published by Image. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There is a part of the soul that stirs at night, in the dark and soundless times of day, when our defenses are down and our daylight distractions no longer serve to protect us from ourselves,” writes beloved author, Joan Chittister. “It’s then, in the still of life, when we least expect it, that questions emerge from the damp murkiness of our inner underworld…These questions do not call for the discovery of data; they call for the contemplation of possibility.” In words as wise as they are inspiring, Between the Dark and the Daylight explores the concerns of modern life, of the overworked mind and hurting heart. These are the paradoxical—and often frustrating—moments when our lives feel at odds with everything around us. Only by embracing the contradictions, Chittister contends, may we live well amid stress, withstand emotional storms, and satisfy our yearnings for something transcendent and real. By delving into the chaos, this book guides us through the questions that seemed easier to avoid and enlightens what has been out of focus. With her signature elegance, wit, and spirit, the bestselling author of The Gift of Years and Following the Path opens our eyes and hearts in these times of confusion. With simple and poignant meditations, Between the Dark and the Daylight reveals how we can better understand ourselves, one another, and God.

Book From Light to Dark

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tim Edensor
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2017-03-21
  • ISBN : 1452953414
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book From Light to Dark written by Tim Edensor and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light pervades the world, and when it is not light, darkness emerges and is combated by electric illumination. Despite this globally shared human experience in which spaces appear radically different depending on time, season, and weather, social science investigation on the subject is meager. From Light to Dark fills this gap, focusing on our interaction with daylight, illumination, and darkness. Tim Edensor begins by examining the effects of daylight on our perception of landscape, drawing on artworks, particular landscapes, and architectural practice. He then considers the ways in which illumination is often contested and can be used to express power, looking at how capitalist, class, ethnic, military, and state power use lighting to reinforce their authority over space. Edensor also considers light artists such as Olafur Eliasson and festivals of illumination before turning a critical eye to the supposedly dangerous, sinister associations of darkness. In examining the modern city as a space of fantasy through electric illumination, he studies how we are seeking—and should seek—new forms of darkness in reaction to the perpetual glow of urban lighting. Highly original and absorbingly written, From Light to Dark analyzes a vast array of artistic interventions, diverse spaces, and lighting technologies to explore these most basic human experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A resonant call to explore the darkness in life, in nature, and in consciousness—including difficult emotions like uncertainty, grief, fear, and xenophobia—through teachings, embodied meditations, and mindful inquiry that provide us with a powerful path to healing. Darkness is deeply misunderstood in today’s world; yet it offers powerful medicine, serenity, strength, healing, and regeneration. All insight, vision, creativity, and revelation arise from darkness. It is through learning to stay present and meet the dark with curiosity rather than judgment that we connect to an unwavering light within. Welcoming darkness with curiosity, rather than fear or judgment, enables us to access our innate capacity for compassion and collective healing. Dharma teacher, shamanic practitioner, and deep ecologist Deborah Eden Tull addresses the spiritual, ecological, psychological, and interpersonal ramifications of our bias towards light. Tull explores the medicine of darkness for personal and collective healing, through topics such as: Befriending the Night: The Radiant Teachings of Darkness Honoring Our Pain for Our World Seeing in the Dark: The Quiet Power of Receptivity Dreams, Possibility, and Moral Imagination Releasing Fear—Embracing Emergence Tull shows us how the labeling of darkness as “negative” becomes a collective excuse to justify avoiding everything that makes us uncomfortable: racism, spiritual bypass, environmental destruction. We can only find the radical path to wholeness by learning to embrace the interplay of both darkness and light.

Book excerpt: A deeply panoramic tour of the night, from its brightest spots to the darkest skies we have left. A starry night is one of nature's most magical wonders. Yet in our artificially lit world, three-quarters of Americans' eyes never switch to night vision and most of us no longer experience true darkness. In The End of Night, Paul Bogard restores our awareness of the spectacularly primal, wildly dark night sky and how it has influenced the human experience across everything from science to art. From Las Vegas' Luxor Beam -- the brightest single spot on this planet -- to nights so starlit the sky looks like snow, Bogard blends personal narrative, natural history, science, and history to shed light on the importance of darkness -- what we've lost, what we still have, and what we might regain -- and the simple ways we can reduce the brightness of our nights tonight.

As he accumulates wealth as a successful entrepreneur in the Alaskan Gold Rush, Harnish must face the challenges of the Yukon Territory. After he makes a fortune, Harnish finds himself still unsatisfied. In efforts to find a new challenge and make more money, Harnish decides to move down to the mainland of America, settling in California. However, after a group of money kings threaten to take his entire amassed fortune, Harnish resorts to violence to recover it, endangering him both physically and morally as he slides down a slippery slope of immorality. Realizing that he can make even more money with undercut business practices, Harnish slowly becomes corrupt, making shady business deals, cheating, and being dishonest. While it gives him more wealth, Harnish soon realizes that money is not all he wants in life. After one of his employees catch his eye, Harnish resorts to harassing her for attention. However, she is a woman of strong will and morals, and refuses his advances. Harnish realizes that she will never reciprocate his attraction if he continues his shady business dealings, but what if it is too late to redeem himself? Filled with action and suspense, Jack London’s Burning Daylight brings an exciting twist to the classic enemies to lovers storyline. Featuring two exciting settings—California and Alaska, Burning Daylight is an entertaining glimpse into the gold rush era of the United States. Through the use of amusing caricatures of hyper-masculinity and hyper-femininity, London’s romance novel also provides intriguing insight on the early 20th century gender expectations. Burning Daylight has inspired several film adaptations over the years, and was among the list of best-selling books when it was released in 1910. With adaptations and record sales, Jack London’s Burning Daylight proves that it is a prolific work able to be enjoyed by audiences even in the 21st century. This edition of Burning Daylight by Jack London is now presented with a new, eye-catching cover and is printed in an easy-to-read font, making it both modern and accessible.
