Book Dark Secrets of Childhood

Download or read book Dark Secrets of Childhood written by Powell, Fred and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2015-05-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, public opinion has been traumatised by revelations of child abuse on a mass scale. It has become the major human rights story of the 21st century in Western society. This ground-breaking book explores the relationship between the media, child abuse and shifting adult–child power relations which, in Western countries, has spawned an ever-expanding range of laws, policies and procedures introduced to address the ‘explosion’ of interest in the issue of child abuse. Allegations of child sexual abuse by Roman Catholic clergy in Ireland – and its ‘cover-up’ by Church authorities – have given rise to one of the greatest institutional scandals of modern history. Through in-depth analysis of 20 years of media representation of the issue, the book draws significant insights on the media’s influence and its impact on civil society. Highly topical and of interest and relevance to lecturers and researchers in the areas of childhood studies, sociology of childhood, child protection and social work, social and public policy and human rights, as well as policymakers, this book provides an important contribution to the international debate about child abuse as reflected to the public through the power of the media.

Book Child Protective Services

Download or read book Child Protective Services written by Bea Kapinski and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bea Kapinski, a longtime case worker for Child Protective Services in Arizona, reveals a behind-the-scenes look at fighting for children in this account that urges reform. One of her first cases was an about-to-be homeless woman who called in a CPS report on herself because she didnt know what else to do. Linda and her six children met the author in an undesirable part of Phoenix at the Motel 6 where they were staying. They were on their last paid night at the motel. Can you please do something? Linda pleaded. Nothing with CPS was ever easy: not the work, not the people, not the policies, not the outcomes. In this memoir, the author shares her most memorable and haunting casesmany of which stemmed from families abusing alcohol and/or drugs, living in poverty, and coping with mental illness. While we must keep CPS workers accountable when something goes wrong, she argues that we need to make it harder for drug-addicted parents to continue having children and gaming the system. Join the author as she reveals the challenging, frustrating, and sometimes rewarding career of being a case manager dedicated to helping families in Child Protective Services.

Book The Dark Side of Child Protection Services Are You a Victim

Download or read book The Dark Side of Child Protection Services Are You a Victim written by Eric Hundley and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those in the child protection services field know that time is a precious commodity, and with a cumbersome work process, heavy caseloads, and insurmountable tasks coupled with time constraints, social workers are at huge risk for burnout. In The Dark Side of Child Protection Services, the author explains how, with his training in industrial and organizational psychology, he was able to devise a system which helps those in the human services field improve performance, as well as reduce stress and increase job satisfaction. Many agencies have processes entrenched in subjectivity, a contributing factor to the dark side of child protection services. Without a disciplined process, subjectivity tends to support inadequacy and nurture dysfunction, which has a pernicious impact on staff, clients, the case management process, and taxpayers. A subjective work practice is often accompanied by a dysfunctional work environment where employee burnout is a constant threat. Dysfunction at work impacts all employees in the work setting, and public agency dysfunction impacts us all-either personally, or monetarily as taxpayers. The Dark Side of Child Protection Services offers a better alternative.

Book Investigating Families

Download or read book Investigating Families written by Kelley Fong and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For many parents, a knock on the door from a state agency with the power to take their children is their worst fear. This experience is widespread and concentrated overwhelmingly in poor communities and communities of color. One in three children nationwide-and over half of Black children-come into contact with Child Protective Services during childhood. This book draws on in-depth fieldwork to examine the U.S. child welfare system, providing a window into the inner workings of CPS and the lives of mothers drawn into its orbit. Kelley Fong draws on extensive, multi-perspective qualitative data across two states, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Child Protective Services investigations have largely eluded ethnographic observation, but Fong had the opportunity to observe investigative visits and interview assigned investigators as well as mothers involved in these cases. She also reviewed case records, conducted follow-up interviews, and attended staff meetings and trainings for investigators. In examining the data, Fong demonstrates how CPS reports are socially produced, and in a context of austerity and structural racism, how CPS reporting becomes a solution to the dilemmas and constraints faced by frontline educational, medical, law enforcement, and other professionals, offering an outlet for their rehabilitative aspirations and a way to compensate for their limitations. Challenging Motherhood argues that CPS reports reframe adverse experiences often rooted in trauma and marginality-such as domestic violence, substance use, and homelessness-as child mistreatment. Ideologies and inequities of race, class, and gender place poor mothers of color in particular under CPS investigation"--

Book Building Solutions In Child Protective Services

Download or read book Building Solutions In Child Protective Services written by Insoo Kim Berg and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2000-10-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[O]ffers creative ways to build alliances with families…using language and motivational interviewing to help parents focus on problem-solving….a valuable resource." --Virginia Child Protection Newsletter How does one change the attitudes and practices of child protective services (CPS)—a statewide bureaucracy often overwhelmed and understaffed? First, take an outsider to the system, Insoo Kim Berg, who has a vision and a solution-focused model. Add an insider, Susan Kelly, who understands the system. Spend many hours with CPS workers in the field, learning from them and helping them make the shift from a deficit perspective to a collaborative model that emphasizes strengths and solutions. Envision and implement change throughout the system. Celebrate small successes on the way to building family self-sufficiency and integrity. This recipe for reforming child protective services is being followed in many public child welfare agencies, with growing success. In Building Solutions the authors explain how to conceptualize, implement, and sustain this hopeful and positive frame in a daily practice for dedicated frontline workers as well as for those in supervision, management, and administration. The book has two parts. In the first, the authors put child protective services in context, introducing the system and their new approach, giving a brief history of child protection in the United States, and setting the stage for change. In the second part, the authors walk readers through the nuts and bolts of implementation, from the first phone call to case closure—including discussions about placing a child out of the home. Berg and Kelly also discuss supervision, consultation, and ongoing training, as well as their vision of the future of CPS. This book is not a manual; it is a challenge to step out of the traditional CPS "box" and think differently—to create client-driven services that make sense. The authors challenge CPS administrators, supervisors, and workers to begin conversations about how the system can be more helpful and respectful to the families so that the parents can get what they need to care for their children. Building Solutions should have a place on the desk of everyone involved in child protective services.

Book What Happened in the Woodshed

Download or read book What Happened in the Woodshed written by Lawrence R. Ricci M.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting exposé of child abuse in America and how the newest breed of pediatricians determines what happened, why, and at whose hands. Although more than one million children are abused each year in the United States, child abuse often remains a secret to family members, professionals, and politicians who neither see nor understand it. Child abuse pediatricians are the newest breed of pediatricians, specialized in exposing abuse. With detective-like acumen, child abuse pediatricians deduce through careful medical analysis who has abused and who has been abused. Describing the most compelling cases among the thousands that they have evaluated, author Lawrence Ricci reveals the trauma, pain, disability, and sometimes death that abused children experience at the hands of trusted adults. This gripping look at the dark side of American families is about good parents and poor ones, perpetrators and victims, and collateral victims such as innocent family members. It is also about the professionals who have made it their career to expose child abuse and to treat children who have suffered from it. The conclusion calls for systematic changes that could help to stem the tide of child abuse.
