Book Degrees of Metastability in Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis consists of an investigation into supersymmetry and its breaking. Emphasis is placed on the question of metastability and the role of non-topological solitons in the hidden sector. A desirable feature in models employing direct gauge mediation is that of tree level metastability, in order to generate large enough gaugino masses. An explicit realisation of this idea is constructed via a simple deformation of SQCD that is well motivated and needs no fine tuning. Any viable metastable supersymmetry breaking vacuum must also be stable enough to survive until the present day. Non-topological solitons, or Q-balls, are supported in all such vacua where there is a conserved, global U(1) symmetry and no massless, charged scalars. It is shown that for a broad class of models Q-balls are extremely influential on the vacuum lifetime and make seemingly viable vacua catastrophically short lived. Even when there is no effect on vacuum stability flat directions charged under an R-symmetry are a ubiquitous feature of O'Raifeartaigh models. Non-topological solitons associated with this symmetry, R-balls, are likely to form through the fragmentation of a condensate. Their cosmology is studied and it is found that they can have significant observable effects, from acting as a good dark matter candidate to providing the primary source of reheating in the early universe.

Book Introduction To Supersymmetry 2nd Edition

This book was released on 2010-01-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersymmetry is a symmetry which combines bosons and fermions in the same multiplet of a larger group which unites the transformations of this symmetry with that of spacetime. Thus every bosonic particle must have a fermionic partner and vice versa. Since this is not what is observed, this symmetry with inherent theoretical advantages must be badly broken. It is hoped that the envisaged collider experiments at CERN will permit a first experimental test, which is expected to revive the interest in supersymmetry considerably. This revised edition of the highly successful text of 20 years ago provides an introduction to supersymmetry, and thus begins with a substantial chapter on spacetime symmetries and spinors. Following this, graded algebras are introduced, and thereafter the supersymmetric extension of the spacetime Poincaré algebra and its representations. The Wess-Zumino model, superfields, supersymmetric Lagrangians, and supersymmetric gauge theories are treated in detail in subsequent chapters. Finally the breaking of supersymmetry is addressed meticulously. All calculations are presented in detail so that the reader can follow every step.

Book Sequestering the Gravitino

Book excerpt: In conventional models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is invariably the gravitino. However, if the supersymmetry breaking sector is strongly coupled, conformal sequestering may raise the mass of the gravitino relative to the remaining soft supersymmetry-breaking masses. In this letter, we demonstrate that such conformal dynamics in gauge-mediated theories may give rise to satisfactory neutralino dark matter while simultaneously solving the flavor and [mu]/B[mu] problems.

Book Physics Beyond the Standard Model

Book excerpt: In this dissertation we consider a number of topical issues in physics beyond the standard model. Motivated by null results from superpartner searches and the tentative Higgs boson signal at mh[subscript], [approximate] 125 GeV, we consider the framework of focus point supersymmetry. Within the focus point framework we examine models in which the neutralino is a thermal relic which saturates the observed dark matter relic density, and generalize the results for dark matter direct detection to generic models with heavy scalars. We also extend the original focus point framework to the case of non-zero A-terms, allowing models in which mh[subscript], [approximate] 125 GeV can be achieved with only 1% fine-tuning in the weak scale. We also consider formal aspects of anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking, in particular a recent derivation of anomaly-mediated soft masses using the full supergravity framework and its relation to the original derivation. Finally, we examine models in which recent contradictory results from light dark matter experiments can be partially explained by relaxing the common assumption of equal couplings to protons and neutrons.

Book Journeys Beyond the Standard Model

Download or read book Journeys Beyond the Standard Model written by Jessica L. Goodman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis attempts to address two outstanding issues in the Standard Model of particle physics. The first of these two has to do with the lack of a viable dark matter candidate in the Standard Model. Many recent experimental results hint at the possibility of a light dark matter particle. If it is light enough, one may consider producing these particles at colliders. Parts of this thesis considers effective theories of dark matter as a way to develop a language to compare collider searches for dark matter to direct and indirect detection experiments. The second of these two issues explores the more aesthetic problem of the gauge hierarchy through construction of supersymmetry breaking models. In the first set of models, we construct UV completions of O'Raifeartaigh-like models which spontaneously break R symmetry. In the final chapter, we construct a R symmetric GMSB model in which we use Seiberg dynamics to generate supersoft Dirac gaugino masses.

Book Dark Matter in Gravity Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking

Book excerpt: In R parity conserving supersymmetric theories, the lightest superpartner (LSP) is stable. The LSPs may comprise a large fraction of the energy density of the current universe, which would lead to dramatic astrophysical consequences. In this talk, he discusses some of the main points they have learned about supersymmetric models from relic abundance considerations of the LSP.

Book excerpt: It is generally believed that most of the matter in the universe is dark, i.e. cannot be detected from the light which it emits (or fails to emit). Its presence is inferred indirectly from the motions of astronomical objects, specifically stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations. It is also required in order to enable gravity to amplify the small fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background enough to form the large-scale structures that we see in the universe today. For each of the stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations the basic principle is that if we measure velocities in some region, then there has to be enough mass there for gravity to stop all the objects flying apart. Dark matter has important consequences for the evolution of the universe and the structure within it. According to general relativity, the universe must conform to one of three possible types: open, flat, or closed. The total amount of mass and energy in the universe determines which of the three possibilities applies to the universe. In the case of an open universe, the total mass and energy density (denoted by the Greek letter Ù) is less than unity. If the universe is closed, Ù is greater than unity. For the case where Ù is exactly equal to one the universe is "flat". This new book details leading-edge research from around the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several of the very foundations of the cosmological standard model — the baryon asymmetry of the universe, dark matter, and the origin of the hot big bang itself — still call for an explanation from the perspective of fundamental physics. This work advocates one intriguing possibility for a consistent cosmology that fills in the theoretical gaps while being fully in accordance with the observational data. At very high energies, the universe might have been in a false vacuum state that preserved B-L, the difference between the baryon number B and the lepton number L as a local symmetry. In this state, the universe experienced a stage of hybrid inflation that only ended when the false vacuum became unstable and decayed, in the course of a waterfall transition, into a phase with spontaneously broken B-L symmetry. This B-L Phase Transition was accompanied by tachyonic preheating that transferred almost the entire energy of the false vacuum into a gas of B-L Higgs bosons, which in turn decayed into heavy Majorana neutrinos. Eventually, these neutrinos decayed into massless radiation, thereby producing the entropy of the hot big bang, generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe via the leptogenesis mechanism and setting the stage for the production of dark matter. Next to a variety of conceptual novelties and phenomenological predictions, the main achievement of the thesis is hence the fascinating notion that the leading role in the first act of our universe might have actually been played by neutrinos.
