Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the twilight of the Weimar Republic, politicians, scientists, and theologians were engaged in debates surrounding the so-called "Jewish Question." When the Nazi Party came to power in 1933, these discussions took on a new sense of urgency and poignancy. As state measures against Jews unfolded, theological conceptions of the meaning of "Israel" and "Judaism" began to impact living, breathing Jewish persons. In this study, Ryan Tafilowski traces the thought of the Lutheran theologian Paul Althaus (1888–1966), who once greeted the rise of Hitler as a "gift and miracle of God," as he negotiated the "Jewish Question" and its meaning for his understanding of Germanness across the Weimar Republic, the Nazi years, and the post-war period. In particular, the study uncovers the paradoxical categories Althaus used to interpret the ongoing theological significance of the Jewish people, whom he considered both an imminent threat to German ethnic identity and yet a mysterious cipher by which Germans might decode their own spiritual destiny in world history. Sketching the peculiar contours of Althaus' theology of Israel, this study offers a fresh interpretation of the Erlangen Opinion on the Aryan Paragraph, which is an important artifact not only of the Kirchenkampf, but also of the complex and ambivalent history of Christian antisemitism. By bringing Althaus into conversation with some of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century—from Karl Barth and Emil Brunner to Rudolf Bultmann and Dietrich Bonhoeffer—Tafilowski broadens the scope of his inquiry to vital questions of political theology, ethnic identity, social ethics, and ecclesiology. As Christian theologians must once again reckon with questions of national self-understanding under the pressures of mass migration and resurgent nationalisms, this investigation into the logic of ethno-nationalist theologies is a timely contribution.

Book Darkness Depression and Descent in Anglo Saxon England

Download or read book Darkness Depression and Descent in Anglo Saxon England written by Ruth Wehlau and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the motifs of darkness, depression, and descent in both literal and figurative manifestations within a variety of Anglo-Saxon texts, including the Old English Consolation of Philosophy, Beowulf, Guthlac, The Junius Manuscript, The Wonders of the East, and The Battle of Maldon. Essays deal with such topics as cosmic emptiness, descent into the grave, and recurrent grief. In their analyses, the essays reveal the breadth of this imagery in Anglo-Saxon literature as it is used to describe thought and emotion, as well as the limits to knowledge and perception. The volume investigates the intersection between the burgeoning interest in trauma studies and darkness and the representation of the mind or of emotional experience within Anglo-Saxon literature.

Book The Answer to the Riddle Is Me

Download or read book The Answer to the Riddle Is Me written by David Stuart MacLean and published by HMH. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A deeply moving account of amnesia that . . . reminds us how we are all always trying to find a version of ourselves that we can live with.” —Los Angeles Times On October 17, 2002, David MacLean “woke up” on a train platform in India with no idea who he was or why he was there. No money. No passport. No identity. Taken to a mental hospital by the police, MacLean then started to hallucinate so severely he had to be tied down. He could remember song lyrics, but not his family, his friends, or the woman he was told he loved. The illness, it turned out, was the result of a commonly prescribed antimalarial medication he had been taking. Upon his return to the United States, he struggled to piece together the fragments of his former life. In this “mesmerizing, unsettling memoir about the ever-echoing nature of identity—written in vivid, blooming detail,” he tells the harrowing, absurd, and unforgettable story of his journey back to himself (Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl). “[MacLean] is an exceedingly entertaining psychotic. . . . [A] raw, honest and beautiful memoir.” —The New York Times “If bad things are going to happen, we are lucky when they happen to someone with the wit, humanity and sweetness—to say nothing of an eye for detail and a gift for pacing—that MacLean brings to this wrenching tale. . . . Readers who flip open the book will find MacLean, preserved between pages, goofy and serious, lost and found.” —Chicago Tribune “[MacLean] writes eloquently about the bizarre and disturbing experience of having his sense of self erased and then reconstructed from scratch.” —The New Yorker

Book excerpt: SOLVING PSYCHIATRIC PUZZLES Please visit this this book’s official website at www.solvingpsychiatricpuzzles.com for more information. Despite revolutionary advances in the field of diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, psychiatry is still shrouded in mystery and those facing mental illness are often stigmatized. What does a psychiatrist do? How are mental illnesses diagnosed and treated? Does mental illness run in families? Do people with mental illness function normally? SOLVING PSYCHIATRIC PUZZLES gives readers an unprecedented look into the entire experience of mental illness – from patient to doctor, from diagnosis to treatment. In this book, Dr. Sethi describes stories of 28 patients with mental disorders, in their own words, and from the hospital and office notes. These stories are universal, and they resonate with patients from all races, classes, genders and socio-economic backgrounds throughout the world. There are no uniform standards for the treatment of mental illness in the United States or abroad. Dr. Sethi presents a model for successful treatment based on the art of empathic listening. The art of listening is the primary tool a psychiatrist has to diagnose and treat mental illness with the help of increasingly complex spectrum of old and new psychiatric medications. Dr. Sethi also describes common psychiatric disorders and psychiatric medications, as well as evolution of history of psychiatry in the United States. Dr. Sethi then invites readers into psychiatric sessions, first hearing patients, then explaining the hospital and office notes taken during sessions so as to educate patients about their diagnosis and rationale for treatment. SOLVING PSYCHIATRIC PUZZLES enables us to better understand mental illness through lucid and powerful descriptions from the perspectives of both patients and clinicians. It reminds us that, despite the lingering stigma of mental illness, 90 percent of all mental illness is treatable like any other physical illness.

Book Nelson Riddle

Download or read book Nelson Riddle written by Geoffrey Littlefield and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book is about one of my all-time heroes, Mr Nelson Riddle. It makes for fascinating reading and I am enjoying it very much.' SIR MICHAEL PARKINSON NELSON RIDDLE was possibly the greatest; one of the most successful arrangers in the history of American popular music. He worked with global icons such as Peggy Lee, Judy Garland and many more. And in a time of segregation and deep racial tensions in the US, he collaborated with leading black artists such as Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald, forming close, personal friendships with both. He also wrote successful TV themes and Oscar-winning film scores. A complex and often forlorn genius, he will forever be remembered for his immortal work with FRANK SINATRA, but like fine wines his later vintage was just as palatable, if somewhat of a surprise.
