Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html Feeling that there was not the slightest hope of falling asleep, he quietly went down from the balcony, deciding to go out onto the road to the station and blot himself, to walk three miles. But he stopped in the courtyard: warm dusk, sweet silence, the milky whiteness of the sky from innumerable small stars ... He walked around the courtyard, stopped again, raised his head: the starry departing deeper and deeper, and there was some terrible black and blue darkness, where there were failures in something ... and calm, silence, incomprehensible, great desert, lifeless and aimless beauty of the world ... the silent, eternal religiosity of the night ... and he alone, face to face with all this, in the abyss between heaven and earth ... He began to pray without words about some heavenly mercy, about someone’s self-pity, with bitter joy feeling his connection with heaven and already some detachment from himself, from his body ... Then, trying to keep these feelings in himself, looked at the house: the stars are reflected in a flattened brilliance in the black glass of the windows - and in the glass of her window ... Sleeping or lying, in a dumb numbness of the same thought about Titov! Yes, that’s her turn ... /// For, according to legend, Hosea made the prophet a family sorrow: Homer was just a girl, and he was no longer young; he was chaste, thoughtful, sad, and despite her childhood, she was an immense harlot.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon to be a major motion picture from Academy Award–winning director Guillermo del Toro and starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Toni Collette. Nightmare Alley begins with an extraordinary description of a carnival-show geek—alcoholic and abject and the object of the voyeuristic crowd’s gleeful disgust and derision—going about his work at a county fair. Young Stan Carlisle is working as a carny, and he wonders how a man could fall so low. There’s no way in hell, he vows, that anything like that will ever happen to him. And since Stan is clever and ambitious and not without a useful streak of ruthlessness, soon enough he’s going places. Onstage he plays the mentalist with a cute assistant (before long his harried wife), then he graduates to full-blown spiritualist, catering to the needs of the rich and gullible in their well-upholstered homes. It looks like the world is Stan’s for the taking. At least for now.

Book The Encyclopedia of Louisville

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Louisville written by John E. Kleber and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 1029 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 1,800 entries, The Encyclopedia of Louisville is the ultimate reference for Kentucky's largest city. For more than 125 years, the world's attention has turned to Louisville for the annual running of the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. Louisville Slugger bats still reign supreme in major league baseball. The city was also the birthplace of the famed Hot Brown and Benedictine spread, and the cheeseburger made its debut at Kaelin's Restaurant on Newburg Road in 1934. The "Happy Birthday" had its origins in the Louisville kindergarten class of sisters Mildred Jane Hill and Patty Smith Hill. Named for King Louis XVI of France in appreciation for his assistance during the Revolutionary War, Louisville was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1778. The city has been home to a number of men and women who changed the face of American history. President Zachary Taylor was reared in surrounding Jefferson County, and two U.S. Supreme Court Justices were from the city proper. Second Lt. F. Scott Fitzgerald, stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor during World War I, frequented the bar in the famous Seelbach Hotel, immortalized in The Great Gatsby. Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville and won six Golden Gloves tournaments in Kentucky.

Book Your Destiny Is in Your Hands

Download or read book Your Destiny Is in Your Hands written by Michael Cooper DTM and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that by thought, we attract the thing. By taking action, we receive the thing. We decide what our thoughts should be. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he (Prov. 23:7). The book encourages us to think using the mind of God (Phil 2:5). Thinking with the mind of God makes success inevitable because God knows all things. The book encourages readers to let go of many things, including the past. But to never give up on the power of believing in oneself. Readers are encouraged to allow their higher self to control the inner conversations. Many people rent out their mind to sources void of credibility but get no compensation in return. Furthermore, they have no “rental clause” to protect them from their mind being highjacked. More often than not, even if their mind is returned to them, it is under the control of envy, jealousy, fear, worry, and “can’t do.” Before the mind is returned to its original owner, it would have forged an intimate relationship with “lack,” “procrastination,” and “the past.” Who is controlling your mind?

Book Midaq Alley

  • ISBN : 1101974664

Book excerpt: Widely acclaimed as Naguib Mahfouz's best novel, Midaq Alley brings to life one of the hustling, teeming back alleys of Cairo in the 1940s. From Zaita the cripple-maker to Kirsha the hedonistic cafe owner, from Abbas the barber who mistakes greed for love to Hamida who sells her soul to escape the alley, from waiters and widows to politicians, pimps, and poets, the inhabitants of Midaq Alley vividly evoke Egypt's largest city as it teeters on the brink of change. Never has Nobel Prize-winner Mahfouz's talent for rich and luxurious storytelling been more evident than here, in his portrait of one small street as a microcosm of the world on the threshold of modernity.

Book The Essential Brunswik

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kenneth R. Hammond
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-09-20
  • ISBN : 9780198029823
  • Pages : 562 pages

Download or read book The Essential Brunswik written by Kenneth R. Hammond and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-09-20 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egon Brunswik is one of the most brilliant, creative and least understood and appreciated psychologists/philosophers of the 20th century. This book presents a collection of Brunswik's most important papers together with interpretive comments by prominent scholars who explain the intent and development of his thought. This collection and the accompanying diverse examples of the application of his ideas will encourage a deeper understanding of Brunswik in the 21st century than was the case in the 20th century. The 21st century already shows signs of acceptance of Brunswikian thought with the appearance of psychologists with a different focus; emulation of physical science is of less importance, and positive contributions toward understanding behavior outside the laboratory without abandoning rigor are claiming more notice. As a result, Brunswik's theoretical and methodological views are already gaining the attention denied them in the 20th century. The plan of this book is to provide, for the first time, in one place the articles that show the origins of his thought, with all their imaginative and creative spirit, as well as thoughtful, scholarly interpretations of the development, meaning and application of his ideas to modern psychology. Thus, his views will become more understandable and more widely disseminated, as well as advanced through the fresh meaning given to them by the psychologists of the 21st century.

Book The One

  • Author : Ronny Russell
  • Publisher : WestBowPress

  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book The One written by Ronny Russell and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The parable in Luke 15:17 can be seen from three angles. The dilemma of the shepherd is whether or not to leave the ninety-nine and go in search of the one lost sheep. It may not make sense economically and rationally, but he leaves them anyway and begins his search. The poor sheep has wandered away and is lostnot hopelessly so, but lost. The sheep does have hope, and it rests with the shepherd whose love for her is so vast and so relentless that he wont rest until he finds the sheep. And then theres the ninety-nine. Their attitude and behavior toward the lost sheep is paramount in the story. Will they join in the search? Will they celebrate with the shepherd once the sheep is returned? Or will they criticize and whine about how the shepherd spends all his time searching for the one who is lost? The One explores the foundational nature of this parable and how important its implications are for the church and ones own walk with the Lord. The value that God places on the one is life-changing for those who come to understand it. An intense and powerful vision shared through the lens of author Ronny Russells personal and professional spiritual journey. Authenticity is found in every paragraph that rings with empowering truth, inspiration, and encouragement for the one. I have watched Ronnys journey for decades and found his passion to be deep, contagious, and transformational for the one and the remnant who seek meaning in our fast-paced world filled with churches that often miss the one to preserve the institution. Ronny serves Christ above all and finds hope in Gods calling and gifting as a member of the body of Christ. Truly a worthy and engaging read! Edward Hammett, author of Spiritual Leadership in a Secular Age and Recovering Hope for Your Church

Book An Ambush of Years

Download or read book An Ambush of Years written by J.A. Enfield and published by Wayzgoose Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mick Conway is tired of mourning his mom and wondering when his dad will finally come home. He’s tired of moving to live with yet another aunt or uncle and having to change schools and friends each time he moves. And, as much as he loves his baby sister Emilia, he might be a little less tired if somebody else would take a turn getting her back to sleep at night. He isn’t tired of electricity, functional sewer systems, or a world with some respect for the laws of physics. But he doesn’t realize how much he cherishes those things until he’s mysteriously dropped somewhere that doesn’t have any of them—though it does have time travel, faceless interlopers skulking in the shadows, and somebody with a sinister plan that could prove deadly. Can Mick help thwart that plan? And can he do so without giving up on getting back home?

  • Pages : 879 pages

Download or read book Wi written by Bill Reed and published by Reed Independent. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surely you remember Wi, a name especially chosen to fit our attention spans? The world-record kidnappee, nabbee, swipee, snatchee, hoisted so many times even he’s lost count? (How about those three times in five minutes effort? That takes rare raw talent, that does.) I mean, if it wasn’t for our Wi how many of these yabbers, yarns, shaggy dogs and yank-your-chain whoppers could I trot out for you? Even getting across one’s not easy when it’s always against the wind from people laughing in your face. No, really, without our Wi, where would all the odd-balls be, drowning their sorrows by ingesting the food in Dominic’s Eatery, swallowing whole mouthfuls without a thought for their own safety? Would any plate get the Wi wipe and come out miraculously unscathed from what had been just laid upon it? Without Wi, how many screwballs could have hired him to do all they’ve always wanted to do? God knows, and the Talls say ‘God knows’ because, if you take it that God made him in His own image, then maybe you’ve stumbled across the one time God spoke too soon. Okay, setting that aside, coming to you is a cast of Lankan characters – and you’d cast too -- and barf, and burp – if you had some of Dominic’s food inside you, let’s not kid ourselves. Not all of us have cast-iron guts and can absorb what could canonize you if you kept it down. And our Wi can’t help being White, either. Did he ever ask for the hoists he’s had to suffer, or complained about the lack of duty-of-care his kidnappers have shown him -- their kidnappee, after all? No. All he asked was a hideaway high above the stars so bright. At least he got that. And, though having to watchfully wait, at least he received the epiphs, too. With the epiphs, he could epiphicatedly dream, so I guess he had something going for him. And let’s not forget he’s Talls recorded as having said, ‘Just let me know if I’m breathing too much and I’ll stop’. Hey, what kidnappee or country like Australia gets a kidnappee so considerate? Is he a peach of a pooch, or what? ---------------------- Bill Reed is an Australian novelist, playwright and short-story writer with national awards for all three. He now lives in both Australia and Sri Lanka.

His later stories - In Paris and On one Familiar Street - explore the alienation of those who cannot forget worlds they have lost.

Book One Good Turn

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kate Atkinson
  • Publisher : Anchor Canada
  • Release : 2009-05-29
  • ISBN : 030737324X
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book One Good Turn written by Kate Atkinson and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is summer, it is the Edinburgh Festival. People queuing for a lunchtime show witness a road-rage incident—an incident which changes the lives of everyone involved. Jackson Brodie, ex-army, ex-police, ex-private detective, is also an innocent bystander—until he becomes a suspect. With Case Histories, Kate Atkinson showed how brilliantly she could explore the crime genre and make it her own. In One Good Turn she takes her masterful plotting one step further. Like a set of Russian dolls each thread of the narrative reveals itself to be related to the last. Her Dickensian cast of characters are all looking for love or money and find it in surprising places. As ever with Atkinson what each one actually discovers is their true self. Unputdownable and triumphant, One Good Turn is a sharply intelligent read that is also percipient, funny, and totally satisfying.
