Download or read book The Eye Pt IB written by Hugh Davson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eye, 3rd Edition, Volume lb: Vegetative Physiology and Biochemistry deals with the vegetative physiology and biochemistry of the eye. The book reviews major advances in the anatomy of the eye and its physiological and biochemical aspects, particularly the cornea and sclera, the ordered state of the lens, and lens development, growth and regeneration. This edition is organized into three chapters and begins with an overview of the mechanical and optical properties of the cornea and sclera and their relationship to the underlying structure of the tissue. This book shows that, in the cornea, the maintenance of the tissue structure requires the constant action of a fluid transport system dependent upon metabolic energy. The pathways of corneal nutrition, the sensitive corneal innervation, and the growth processes in the cornea and sclera are also discussed, emphasizing the mammalian cornea. The next chapter examines the use of physical and chemical techniques to determine how the ordered state of the lens is maintained and why that state is susceptible to chaotropic attack. Finally, an account of the metabolism of the lens and how cataract forms is given. This book is a valuable resource for students and researchers in fields ranging from ocular science to physiology and biochemistry.

JEAN NORDMANN, Emeritus Professor of Strasbourg University, will celebrate his 80th anniversary. The task of paying tribute to Professor NORDMANN's many services to ophthalmology in a way worthy of the occasion is so difficult that we decided to concentrate on the focal point of his life's work. In this issue scientists engaged in lens research from allover the world offer reports of their latest findings together with their best wishes and felicitations as a birthday gift to the Nestor of lens research. They thereby express their gratitude to Professor NORDMANN, who, with the lifelong in defatigable enthusiasm of a scientist, has most successfully persued the prob lems of lens metabolism. It is our sincerest hope that we may look forward to many more years in which to take advantage of Professor NORDMANN's superior knowledge. Among the contributions to this festive donation we miss the works of some authors who have always held Professor NORDMANN's special inter est. The editor has received several letters of longstanding friends who would have liked to submit a manuscript but had been unable to meet the deadline: Professor NORDMANN may rest assured that they, too, belong to the great number of congratulators from our field of research. We have been able to make this dedication thanks to Professor HENKES who readily agreed to publish our contributions in Documenta Ophthal mologica. Dr. Junk publishers have done their utmost to ensure prompt publication.
Download or read book Ocular Theraputics and Drug Delivery written by Indra K. Reddy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-12-12 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ocular therapeutics and drug delivery is a subject of interest to specialists from various disciplines such as chemical, biochemical, medical, pharmaceutical, and toxicological, it truly presents a unique situation requiring a multi-disciplinary approach in understanding and addressing various problems. Yet we see that scientists associated with these areas are working, by and large, independently of one another, thus limiting dissemination of knowledge, experience and ideas that would greatly enhance the overall progress in this area of research. Regrettably, the information currently available in ocular therapeutics and drug delivery, though extensive, is still fragmented into various disciplines making meaningful synthesis difficult. Several books are available that cover one or two aspects of the multi-disciplinary fields on an individual basis; however, none is available that covers all of them. The chapters contained in this book are specific to various interrelated areas of ocular therapeutics and drug delivery and are written by acknowledged experts from both academia and industry. The book itself is divided into five parts, namely: (I) overview, basic principles, and methodology; (II) pathopharmacology and clinical applications; (III) chemical/ biochemical approaches to ocular drug delivery; (IV) formulation and drug delivery considerations; and (V) industrial and regulatory considerations. Individual chapters in each section, apart from presenting a concise text, entail an extensive listing of references.

Download or read book Recent Advances in Nervous System Toxicology written by Corrado L. Galli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses some facets of the adverse actions of chemical agents on the central and peripheral nervous systems in developing and mature states. Some of the effects of these chemicals are short-lasting and rapidly reversible; others, especially those that cause structural damage to the nervous system, may result in permanent damage to the organism. The nervous system has several levels of vulnerability to toxic substances. Some substances perturb ion channels or synaptic mechanisms required for the orderly transfer of electrochemical information within the nervous system. Others disrupt sites required for the maintenance of cellular integrity, and these variably result in degenerative responses of neurons and myelinating cells. Further sites of vulnerability include the delicate neural vasculature and neurohumeral mechanisms responsible for physiological homeostasis. The science of neurotoxicology inevitably is a multidisciplinary endeavor, with contributions from biochemistry, physiology, morphology and behavior, to name a few. The challenge is to apply appropriate techniques to investigate neurotoxic phenomena. The first logical step in this analysis is to determine from the point of view of the nervous system the nature of the exposure. Is the chemical a single or multiple entity; is it metabolized; how does it gain access to neural tissue? Once these factors are understood, changes induced by the exposure can be described at various levels from the biochemical to the behavioral.

Download or read book Ocular Toxicology written by Keith Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On behalf of the editorial board and the organizing committee of the 4th congress of the International Society of Ocular Toxicology (I SOT), held in AnnecyNeyrier du Lac, France, October 9 -13, 1994, we are pleased to present to the ocular toxicology community this indexed volume of our congress proceedings. The 4th congress was designed primarily to facilitate and update the knowledge in ocular electrophysiology and ocular pharmacokinetics, in both the clinical and preclinical aspects. The outcome of this 4th congress, established in this volume, is a useful contribution to the meth odology in both fields and will hopefully assist in the evaluation and interpretation of ocular findings recorded in animal studies on drugs and other chemicals, in order to protect human health. Undoubtedly, work on the mechanisms of ocular toxicology in the process of pharmaceutical development must continue and these proceedings, embodying the presented papers, will add to the data base. The editors, the congress organizing committee and the members of the International Society of Ocular Toxicology thank the speakers who gave their time, knowledge, and expertise to assist us in this project. The following manuscripts contain the main substance of each of the platform presentations and, in some cases, much more. Moreover, our thanks go to all the participants coming from a range of background- regulatory, academic and industrial -for their attention and excellent contributions during the discussion.

Download or read book Vegetative Physiology and Biochemistry written by Hugh Davson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eye: Volume 1, Vegetative Physiology and Biochemistry is a compendium of papers that describes the physiology of the eye, particularly its gross anatomy and embryology including its intra-ocular fluids, the intra-ocular pressure, the vitreous body, lens, cornea, and sciera. Several papers review the eyeball, the protective apparatus of the eye, the structure of the tissue in relation to the intra-ocular fluids, and the flow of aqueous humor. Several methods can be used to measure the intra-ocular pressure such as the manometric method and the tonometer. Giles (1959) reports that tonometer measurements in the newborn are within the normal adult range. One paper notes that in man, liquefaction of the vitreous body (the clear jelly-like structure which fills the space between retina and lens,) which is caused by dissolution of the fibrous network, is never repaired. This suggests that new fibers are either not formed or are formed in insufficient amounts. Another paper examines the relationship between pressure in the eye vessels and eye tension. Investigators and researches in the fields of physiology, psychology, ophthalmology, and in all branches of ocular physiology will find the compendium very rewarding.
