Book Inclusion in New Danish Cinema

Download or read book Inclusion in New Danish Cinema written by Meryl Shriver-Rice and published by Intellect (UK). This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often recognized as one of the happiest countries in the world, Denmark, like its Scandinavian neighbors, is known for its progressive culture, which is also reflected in its national cinema. It is not surprising, then, that Danish film boasts as many successful women film directors as men, uses scripts that are often cowritten by the director and the screenwriter, and produces one of the largest numbers of queer films directed by and starring women. Despite all this, Danish film is not widely written about, especially in English. Inclusion in New Danish Cinema brings this vibrant culture to English-language audiences. Meryl Shriver-Rice argues that Denmark has demonstrated that film can reinforce cultural ethics and political values while also navigating the ongoing and mounting forces of digital communication and globalization.

Book Enacting the University Danish University Reform in an Ethnographic Perspective

Download or read book Enacting the University Danish University Reform in an Ethnographic Perspective written by Susan Wright and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the transformative power and the limitations of one of Europe’s most significant university reforms from an ethnographic and historical perspective. It incorporates voices positioned across university and policy-making hierarchies in its analysis of how Danish universities have been transformed. To do this, the book continually juxtaposes two meanings of ‘enactment’: a top-down view based on laws and institutional power, and a bottom-up view of multiple actors shaping their institution in day-to-day life and in actively contested changes. By conceiving of the university as ‘enacted’ in both ways at once, the book explores how and why the university comes to be imagined and instantiated in new ways. The book traces the arguments for reform through a two-decade long, dynamic struggle between international forums and national industrial, political and academic interests over the definition of the university. It discusses which ideas finally became dominant and how this happened. It looks at government reforms from 2003 onwards, and, by means of notable ‘telling moments’, explains how the governance and management of the university were transformed. It examines how academics found room to manoeuvre between contesting discourses that affect their identity and work. Finally, it shows how students engaged with new versions of historical debates about their participation in shaping their own education, their institution and society.

Book Danish Reactions to German Occupation

Download or read book Danish Reactions to German Occupation written by Carsten Holbraad and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five years during World War II, Denmark was occupied by Germany. While the Danish reaction to this period of its history has been extensively discussed in Danish-language publications, it has not until now received a thorough treatment in English. Set in the context of modern Danish foreign relations, and tracing the country’s responses to successive crises and wars in the region, Danish Reactions to German Occupation brings a full overview of the occupation to an English-speaking audience. Holbraad carefully dissects the motivations and ideologies driving conduct during the occupation, and his authoritative coverage of the preceding century provides a crucial link to understanding the forces behind Danish foreign policy divisions. Analysing the conduct of a traumatised and strategically exposed small state bordering on an aggressive great power, the book traces a development from reluctant cooperation to active resistance. In doing so, Holbraad surveys and examines the subsequent, and not yet quite finished, debate among Danish historians about this contested period, which takes place between those siding with the resistance and those more inclined to justify limited cooperation with the occupiers – and who sometimes even condone various acts of collaboration.

Book Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature and Theater

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature and Theater written by Jan Sjåvik and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006-04-19 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of Scandinavia is amazingly rich and varied, consisting of the works produced by the countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, and stretching from the ancient Norse Sagas to the present day. While much of it is unknown outside of the region, some has gained worldwide popularity, including the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, the stories of Isak Dinesen, and the plays of Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg. While obviously including the area's most famous works, the Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Literature and Theater also provides information on lesser known authors and currents trends, literary circles and journals, and historical background. This is accomplished through a list of acronyms, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries, which together make this reference the most comprehensive and up to date work of its kind related to Scandinavian literature and theater available anywhere.

Book Georg Jensen

Download or read book Georg Jensen written by Alison Fisher and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This beautifully illustrated catalogue explores how Georg Jensen silver has expanded the boundaries of modern style, changing the look of twentieth-century homes and spreading Scandinavian design around the world. Design for Everyday Living is the first scholarly treatment of Georg Jensen to approach the firm's output in an analytical way, situating it in the context of twentieth-century design history and focusing on the firm's unique evolution and global influence. This book is geared to a wide audience of interested nonspecialists and design historians rather than to a narrower readership of silver collectors. It is also innovative in that it focuses on the story of the firm rather than solely on the career of its founder. The essays are all original and include a contribution from Thomas Thulstrup, the leading expert on Georg Jensen silver. The book also benefits from a close collaboration with the Jensen firm, which has allowed us access to images and archival materials published here for the first time"--
