Book excerpt: Liberty Press announces the release of Danger Road: A true crime story of murder and redemption, by criminal defense lawyer and author John P. Contini. Contini was the trial lawyer who defended Gilbert Fernandez, Jr., the former Miami-Dade police officer once named, Miamis Meanest Cop. Danger Road is the riveting courtroom drama that recreates the true crime story of three drug dealers who were brutally murdered in 1983 on a lonely stretch of dirt road - ironically named Danger Road, in the Florida Everglades. Each victim had hoped this final drug deal in Hollywood, Florida would be their big retirement score. Instead, the drug dealers allegedly found themselves at the end of a gun wielded by Metro Dade officer Gilbert Fernandez, Jr., and eventually along Danger Road in Miamis Everglades. Fernandez, formerly known as a Mr. Florida bodybuilding champion, kick boxing champion and black-belt karate instructor, was also alleged to be the muscle for the mob in South Florida. He and his crew were not there to arrest the drug dealers that night, according to police - they were there to kill them and steal their nine kilos of cocaine.

Download or read book You Suck at Racing written by Ian Korf and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lot of books on driving are written by professional racers who assume you too want to be a professional racer. Not this book. It's written by a hobbyist who suggests you keep your day job. Besides, it's much more fun being an enthusiastic amateur than a jaded professional (just ask someone in the sex industry). This book is designed to help the average driver make the transition from commuter to safe road racer in as few pages as possible. I wrote this book because it's what I would have wanted to read when I first became interested in track driving: succinct, nerdy, practical, and occasionally diverting. It is not intended as a definitive tome or a work of art. It's more like a sandwich: convenient and nourishing.

Book Measuring Road Safety with Surrogate Events

Download or read book Measuring Road Safety with Surrogate Events written by Andrew Tarko and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring Road Safety Using Surrogate Events provides researchers and practitioners with the tools they need to quickly and effectively measure traffic safety. As traditional crash-based safety analyses are being undermined by today’s growing use of intelligent vehicular and road safety technologies, crash surrogates--or near misses--can be more effectively used to measure the future risk of crashes. This book advances the idea of using these near-crash techniques to deliver quicker and more adequate measurements of safety. It explores the relationships between traffic conflicts and crashes using an extrapolation of observed events rather than post-crash data, which is significantly slower to obtain. Readers will find sound estimation methods based on rigorous scientific principles, offering compelling new tools to better equip researchers to understand road safety and its factors. Consolidates the latest updates/ideas from disparate places into a single resource Establishes a consistent use of key terms, definitions and concepts to help codify this emerging field Contains numerous application-oriented case studies throughout Includes learning aids, such as chapter objectives, a glossary, and links to data used in examples

  • Author : Christian Wolmar

Download or read book Are Trams Socialist written by Christian Wolmar and published by London Publishing Partnership. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport is key to our daily lives. The transport system is essential to ensure the movement of people and goods, and most of us will use the roads or public transport every day. Vast sums are tied up in it and are spent on trying to resolve the problems of congestion and delays. And yet it is a most neglected field of politics. Britain has never had a coherent transport policy. Transport ministers are regarded as minnows compared with their ‘big beast’ colleagues in other ministries. Successive governments have barely attempted to get to grips with the challenge of getting people around efficiently and safely while limiting the environmental damage caused by transport. In this entertaining polemic, Christian Wolmar, an author and journalist who has written about transport for over two decades, explains why politicians have not addressed the crucial issue of balancing transport needs with environmental considerations. Instead, they have been seduced by the popularity of the car and pressure from the car lobby, and they have been sidetracked by dogma. Solutions are at hand – and successful examples can be seen elsewhere in Europe – but courage and clear thinking are needed if they are to be implemented.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive, this "tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy's stature as a living master. It's gripping, frightening and, ultimately, beautiful" (San Francisco Chronicle). • From the bestselling author of The Passenger A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation. Look for Cormac McCarthy's latest bestselling novels, The Passenger and Stella Maris.

Book excerpt: We'd just bought a station wagon. It was a beauty. We packed the kids in it and took off for my parents' house. It was a grey, rainy day, but the road, in this stretch, was straight and reasonably wide. I could see the truck in its great cloud of spray coming in the other lane, and quite far ahead. The kids were playing in the back as it got closer. When it was almost on us, a red Mustang suddenly materialized in the spray cloud. It headed straight at us, and fast. I now think, though I'm not sure, that the three of us, the truck, the Mustang and the station wagon must have adjusted somehow. There was no crash. I drove on for about thirty seconds. I was cool and steady that whole time. The road was clear, but I lost control. I had to stop. My hands were too wet, my heart was bouncing. My body shaking. I looked at my wife. She was white, stiff. For the first time in my life I realized how truly dangerous driving could be. Since that adventure there have been many others on the roadways I travelled since retirement. All are far less frightening. And most of them stirred up some anger. The guy who backed into my little Austin-Healey. And the young woman (a Tonka) who never even looked at me as she made a left turn from the right lane next to me. There were more. I was beginning to consioder driving a matter of personal combat. There were signs, my wife said. I had better do something. I didn't, but the idea in the "disclaimer" came to me. It has helped. I believe I've adapted somewhat, and my blood pressure is staying down pretty well. It seems to be working for me. Try it. And some of the remedies we've suggested are even sort of rewarding.
