Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was 5, I thought that I knew how the world worked. After all, I could now cross the street by myself. For Ellen Malin Six growing up in Chicago in the Forties meant counting five taverns on a block before making a turn to the schoolhouse. When I was 21, I walked into the world with a degree in my hand ready to conquer and overcome. Surprise. The world was not waiting for her. When I was 50, I was fully vested in the world. I had a husband, three daughters, a career, a home, family, friends, faith and enough fortune to enjoy the riches of life. Her journey led her from the South side of Chicago to Lithuania, a place that she knew only from her mother's bedtime stories. It was five years after the country had reclaimed its freedom from the Communists. She found herself in a cemetery searching for markers of faith and for her own heritage. When I was 70, my husband died. All that I thought and everything that I had learned, and all that I knew, no longer made sense. Tombstones have been the markers for her life.

Book The Dead Duck Bounced

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Humphries
  • Publisher : Grosvenor House Publishing
  • Release : 2022-04-28
  • ISBN : 1803810947
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book The Dead Duck Bounced written by John Humphries and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-28 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What became of Harold Prettyman, a German agent captured by the British during World War Two? Eighty years later, an investigation by reporter Jack Flynt seems to end at a new dormer bungalow with white pebble-dash walls, not the grey stone terraced house in the Welsh valleys from which, according to a recently declassified MI5 file, Prettyman operated a radio transmitter from the attic alerting German U-Boats to Allied shipping movements. Dead ducks are news stories destined for the News Editor's spike and Flynt suspects he has found one until a letter arrives at the bungalow with the same coded message --Many Happy Returns Harold Prettyman--used by Prettyman and his accomplice in 1940. But there are no Allied food convoys in the North Atlantic and, believing the letter a hoax Flynt's newspaper moves him to another assignment—the disappearance of a Foreign Office diplomat suspected of fleeing to Moscow like his predecessors Burgess and Maclean. But Scotland Yard seems more interested in the Coal Miner, a missing Van Gogh masterpiece looted by the Red Army Trophy Brigade as war reparations, but now the focus of an exhibition at Tate Britain after being returned to its owner by the Commission for the Recovery of Looted Art in Europe. The painting discovered hanging on the kitchen wall of the apartment of a dead Trophy Brigade officer had been taken in lieu of pension. Private homes, art galleries and museums across the Russian Federation continue to hold large quantities of booty from the Second World War, worthless since President Putin banned the repatriation of cultural artifacts, but priceless in the West. So, is the Coal Miner exhibited at the Tate the missing Van Gogh or a forgery made by a copyist at the Hermitage in St Petersburg? A zig-zag trail leads Flynt's search for Harold Prettyman into the world of Diplomatic Bags, fakes, and money laundering.

Book A Dance at the Slaughterhouse

Download or read book A Dance at the Slaughterhouse written by Lawrence Block and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2000-07-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no accolade or major mystery award that has not already been bestowed upon Lawrence Block. His acclaimed crime novels are asintelligent, provocative, and emotionally complex as they are nerve-tighteningly intense. And perhaps the most respected of his myriad works are the Matthew Scudder books -- masterworks of suspenseful invention featuring a remarkable protagonist rich in conscience and character, with all the flaws that his humanity entails. This is the detective novel as high art. A Dance At The Slaughterhouse In Matt Scudder's mind, money, power, and position elevate nobody above morality and the law. Now the ex-cop and unlicensed p.i. has been hired to prove that socialite Richard Thurman orchestrated the brutal murder of his beautiful, pregnant wife. During Scudder's hard drinking years, he left a piece of his soul on every seedy corner of the Big Apple. But this case is more depraved and more potentially devastating than anything he experienced while floundering in the urban depths. Because this investigation is leading Scudder on a frightening grand tour of New York's sex-for-sale underworld -- where an innocent young life is simply a commodity to be bought and perverted ... and then destroyed.

Book My Year of Living Spiritually

Download or read book My Year of Living Spiritually written by Anne Bokma and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2019-10-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2017, Anne Bokma embarked on a quest to become a more spiritual person. After leaving the fundamentalist religion of her youth, she became one of the eighty million North Americans who consider themselves spiritual-but-not-religious, the fastest growing “faith” category. In mid-life she found herself addicted to busyness, drinking too much, hooked on social media, dreading the empty nest and still struggling with alienation from her ultra-religious family. In response, she set out on a year-long whirlwind adventure to immerse herself in a variety of sacred practices—each of which proved to be illuminating in unexpected ways—to try to develop her own definition of what it means to be spiritual. In My Year of Living Spiritually, Bokma documents a diverse range of soulful first-person experiences—from taking a dip in Thoreau’s Walden Pond, to trying magic mushrooms for the first time, booking herself into a remote treehouse as an experiment in solitude, singing in a deathbed choir and enrolling in a week-long witch camp—in an entertaining and enlightening way that will compel readers (non-believers and believers alike) to try a few spiritual practices of their own. Along the way, she reconsiders key relationships in her life and begins to experience the greater depth of meaning, connection, gratitude, simplicity and inner peace that we all long for. Readers will find it an inspiring roadmap for their own spiritual journeys.

Book Myself and the Other Fellow

Download or read book Myself and the Other Fellow written by Claire Harman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He thrilled readers the world over with breathtaking tales of pirates (Treasure Island) and monsters (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). But the short life of writer Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94) was as adventurous as almost anything in his fiction. He was both engineer and aesthete, Covenanter and atheist, dutiful son and reckless lover. His travels, illnesses, creative struggles, volatile relationships, and titanic quarrels were the stuff of legend. Until now, no biography has done justice to the complex, brilliant, and troubled man who was responsible for so many remarkable literary creations, the least "Victorian" of Victorian writers. Claire Harman's Myself & the Other Fellow is a fascinating portrait of a man of humor, resilience, and strongly unconventional views, the most authoritative, comprehensive, and perceptive biography of Robert Louis Stevenson to date.
